    Dear HistoryVile,
As one who criticised your Channel for putting out historical contents about Nigeria in a manner that made it look like the country is only made up of 3 major ethnic groups, I want to specially commend your channel for not just putting out this highly informative, insightful and deeply revealing content on this issue and topic of the Niger Delta Region and the struggle for resource control led by Major Isaac Adaka Boro, but for doing it with such captivating details on the background of the story that led to the declaration of the first breakaway Republic from the Nigerian State.
I believe that just like me, you guys are also witnessing the huge interest that this video has generated and the ignorance that this video has dispelled! So I say once again, that my criticism of your previous one sided narrative of Nigerian history was not personal but very constructive.
I will not join issues with those who say your narrative of the events in this video are not accurate because your narrative of the events in this video is not only well researched but you cited several authorities to back up every fact narrated.

Adekunle overstretched his division and when the Biafra forces went after the division, their number was whittled down to less than 10,000 men from a high number of more than 40, 000 in just a few months' time. Adekunle sent many Nigerian soldiers to their early graves and for his incompetence he was removed as division commander. He was then replaced by Col. While the Biafran War results in a slight splinter of opinions among Ijaw (most died for/under Biafran flag, some neutral and Boro favored Nigeria) we ALL honor Boro with no exception because no matter his stance, it was always with the welfare of Ijaw in mind. Dear HistoryVille,
You seem to have conveniently left out 2 important points in your account of Isaac Adaka Boro.
    1. The Niger Delta Republic as declared by Boro was an homogeneous ethnic Ijaw nation. Not the contemporary understanding of the term Niger Delta today, that consists of 9 states in the southeast and south south of Nigeria (which is a conglomeration of many ethnic nationalities such as the Ibibio, Igbo, Annang, Efik, Itsekiri, Urhobo, Isoko, Ijaw and others).
    2. David Boro, Adaka Boro’s younger brother during an interview with Punch said and I quote, "Isaac Boro did not just start the 12-Day
Revolution and decided to declare a Niger
Delta Republic. There was some degree of
    encouragement from the North."
*Adaka Boro having close ties with the Balewa government as uncovered by MD Yusuf (1966), Criminal Investigation Department
chief, was that the Boro insurrection was a Balewa plan to divide the East. The classic divide and rule that Britain taught their Fulani stooges.
**According to reviews by scholars: South African anti-apartheid activist and scholar, Ruth First as quoted by Kathryn Nwajiaku, states that Boro and his men were in league with senior Northern officers, and had wanted to use the threat of revolution to trigger the imposition of a
state of emergency by the Northern-led Federal government prior to the first coup.
Please always give a holistic account of history. No subtraction or addition. I don’t want to say this was a sorry attempt at whitewashing Adaka Boro as it might as well be an honest mistake.
    I’ll end on this note.

    • @factsandgrin
      @factsandgrin ปีที่แล้ว +5

Your observations are good but it came with two further observation/question from me
      1. Tafawa Balewa was already dead in the Jan 15 coup before Adaka Boro declared in Feb 23, so the Northern-led govt was longer in existence as at the time he declared Niger Delta republic, Aguiyi Ironsi was the supreme leader as at the time.
      2. If the North wanted to weaken the Eastern region like you said, they could have just created a new state out of the region just like Gowon did eventually in 1967 before the civil war, that would not need Isaac Boro declaring a whole republic and commiting treason, he just need to agitate for a state of Niger Delta, atleast the Midwestern state was created out of the Western region without a fight.
What do you say to this two observations?

    • @ebimayeagagha6215
      @ebimayeagagha6215 ปีที่แล้ว

I was told that Mr. Akputakpu (who was a tenant) brought his focused biafra soldiers to Ofunama and served the community paper that he owned the community (during the war). Unfortunately we have not seen Mr. Akputakpu and his beautiful family till date. I think that was what most of the minority ethnic groups in the eastern region was facing.

'The Aro(chukwu) Confederacy' it was a political alliance between Igbos, Ijaws and Efiks etc. that last from 1690-1902 before the British colonised.
In Nigeria theres 3 major ethnic groups. It's a good idea for a group with lesser numbers to align themselves with one of the bigger ones as long as theres mutual respect.
A minority group can't overcome a dominant ethnic group by themselves, the giants of Nigeria are Hausa, Igbos and Yorubas. and Hausa-Fulanis are dominating politics, in fact before anyone can rise in the political space they would've first kissed the asses of the Fulani oligarchy. This isn't right or fair. Ijaws or any other minor group can't challenge any major group on their own to demand justice and never will. Alliances are necessary and should be made.
After all, before Hausa-Fulani soldiers duelled Igbos(+minority ethnic groups that supported) to take Eastern Region back they had to be helped by the Yorubas even tho up to 70K+(?) federal nigerian soldiers lost their lives and the battles lasted 3yrs. Had the Yorubas not supported the North, Ojukwu may have succeeded. Everyone needs alliances.
To take down corruption spear-headed by the North, the South needs to unite to challenge them together, otherwise forget it.
we saw how the North kicked out GEJ, its North vs South and always will be.
Some groups in SS think theyre special and seek acceptance from the North but don't realise Hausas main objective is to have no challengers, and Igbos challenged them so theyre trying to manipulate their neighbours so they can never form a political front against them. the moment Southern Nigeria unites is the end of Hausa-Fulani domination

An often forgotten aspect of Nigeria's history that truly reflects dynamics in the country. Most people assume the South East and South South are the same, until one knows the story of Adaka Boro. He highlighted the differences and inspiration of the South South, from the South East. If Adaka Boro had wanted a region, he would have submitted a request to the Federal Government of Nigeria at Lagos for the purpose of creating another region out of Eastern Region, the same way that people of the Old Midwest Region submitted a request to the Federal Government of Nigeria at Lagos to create their own region. Besides, regions are not created through declaration by one man but via the democratic instrument of plesbicite. Again, you do not need a Volunteer Force to create a region such as Midwest Region. Adaka Boro was brave. His mistakes cost him his life. He had 'beef' for the Igbos due to Ironsi's govt clamping down on the Niger delta volunteer force. I can't blame him much. It is the same issues that still confront us today. Where is his integrity if he could switch loyalty within such a short time to serve thesame govt that imprisoned him? Meanwhile, Ironsi spared all of those of them caught on grounds of treason. We all forget these are some of the issues Ironsi was later accused of after Jan66 came and he settled for the same imprisonment of the coupist instead of death. Ironsi was called weak and all manner of names like GEJ for these considerations till he got assassinated. The North saw all of us including Adaka Boro as the same people. Boro and his likes, out of beef thought it was right to emphasize to the world their differences to the Igbos.
Adaka Boro joined the Federal forces [Now Under Gowon] against Biafra. He guided the Nig army to the Biafrans. Heard from veterans he was shot by Brigadier Benjamin Adekunle over a disagreement and his seeming concerns on the level of carnage the war turned out to be. Nigeria has failed to tell the truth on all that transpired then. Other Nigerian youths seem to rely on just the same propaganda they have followed forever. They forget that many Biafran soldiers are still alive. Even those that worked with Issac Boro are still living. They will tell their children the truth. Not the Nigerian versions. Remember there was a victor and a vanquished. The Nigeria you see now is the story and programme of the victors. It is wise to still ask or look into what the vanquished represented.
Adaka Boro along the line began having disagreements with the federal forces over many issues - from planning to welfare and so on. Which sounds familiar to settling the militants today to keep the peace. He probably realised he has aided the massacre of his own cousins, while Nigeria fail on their closed-door agreements. Adaka Boro's waning loyalty to the federal forces cost him his life. All who served Nigeria against their own, get killed by Nigeria.
Saro Wiwa also sabotaged Biafra. Only to pick up the same fight many years later. This time, he was on his own. Nigeria did not have a second thought before such an illustrious citizen got hanged. Ojukwu visited him in prison, and initiated their conversation by telling him "good morning". Saro Wiwa as a literary giant obviously got the message. It was late. If you follow even the order of events, you can easily see the pattern the Nigerian govt exploited to divide the old Eastern Nigeria. When you hear we are SS, Niger delta, we are not Biafrans, bla bla....... These are partly how they came about.
What Nigeria[the victors] will never tell you or bring up today is this; let us conjecture the Adaka Boros, the Saro Wiwas and co, were to be consulted in their graves. Will they still support Nigeria? Food for thought.

Your piece is full of arrogance and hatred towards Boro and the Ijaw people. At no time did Boro switch allegiance to the federal government bcos he was never part of any Biafra govt. Boro Fought both against the Federal govt first which was been controlled by the igbos and then much later the secessionist Igbo Biafra Grps who seek to take along them his Territory, the Ijaw territory alongside with them.
Major Boro had to team up with the now federal government to take back his Territory. A Fight he fought till his last drop of his blood. In his death, we the Ijaw people, his People were saved..

@@etemoweiaguamah5940 : Not sure what you mean by arrogance. Keep the vile talk away and just say what you know well, that I don't know. Again, every and anyone who betrays his own conscience either gets ridiculed [or killed eventually] by the same ungodly and vindictive steps they take. It is almost an automatic faith to come.
You can see I am for Biafra. You are not my enemy. So just the points.
Firstly I wonder where you got that line on Adaka Boro serving the Biafran forces. Instead of creating an argument let that be an error.
Little memory lane; Remember Enahoro? He was convicted of a crime and deported from London to Nigeria to serve his term. Typical of Nigeria, he naturally became a willing tool. Anyone could be a beneficiary of his actions and see him differently; which is fair enough. My views are based on a constant pattern noticeable across all state actors who take steps in bad faith.
Same as Awolowo did on his release. Despite a breakdown between the Fed govt of Nigeria and the regional govt of the East, alongside some of the Jan 1966 coupists [whom could all be said to be on the same page], after vowing and making assurances sympathetic to Ojukwu's plight for speaking up; and reaffirming his disdain for the yet overtly present neo-colonial grip on Nigeria through a preponderant northern party; Awolowo's diametric opposition to all the ideals he upheld fighting for our independence barely 6yrs back from this period, makes him a glorified willing tool in the hands of the same people or conspiracy that jailed him. He was used and dumped again conspicuously again two more memorable times. Till he committed suicide. No one in the right frame of mind commits suicide.
If you want to say there is no validity to these observed similarities, I can only wish you the best of luck. Awo served as Gowon's deputy thereafter prison. This logically would mobilize the southwest to a great extent compared to Akintola who was now out of the way.
Enahoro's similarly must have rallied the Midwest. It is on record he went as far as saying there was no genocide going on in Biafra, whilst at the Vatican. That shouldn't come from a revolutionist like Enahoro. Such statements can only be in bad faith. He got dumped. Lest we forget both Awolowo and Enahoro were parties to the Aburi accord. With all these brilliant people I wonder what happened. We have all seen the full contents today.
Adaka Boro according to you fought against secessionist Igbo groups (Against Biafra). And he did all that unilaterally at the same time with the Federal forces. Anyhow, you put it, the first attempt at secession with his volunteer force we all can consider heroic, but after his release by Gowon, there was bad faith, from my perspective. The boomerang came regardless of our different interpretations. With only the Ijaw group, anti-Biafrans, and the likes, he opened the creeks to the Nigerian army and led them to the killings of many Biafrans.
At the end of this all, who killed him? Is it the Biafrans? The anti-Biafrans with him? Or better still they write simply he died in battle, Naija style reporting. When we start answering the bottom line questions we'll see the patterns are exactly the same.

Let's even assume you are correct, Ironsi stopped them from secession, do you Gbolahon and your fathers now support secession? since Ironsi was wrong not to have supported their secession, did you support Adaka Boro and his Niger delta secession? Did you support Biafra secession after? Which secession has you as a Yoruba man agreed to since it was the Igbos who wrongly stopped Adaka boro? You are a hypocrite in the debate. Not sure you even understand that.
You mentioned Nzeogwu and at the same time talked about Igbos jailing those from the Niger delta trying to secede. See how much your own ignorance stinks. Let me ask you Gbolagan, was Nzeogwu an Igbo man? Let me show you how stupid you look inside that propaganda you were raised in. What you are saying is Ironsi screwed Adaka boros secession. What you have missed with your beer parlour analysis is this; Jan 1966 and Feb 1966 are barely few weeks apart. Nzeogwu [from Niger delta] did a coup in middle of Jan 1966; then gave power to Ironsi and Igbo man, then another man from Niger delta started a secession of Niger delta in Feb 1966. This means Ironsi's govt has not even settled down while it grappled with the unrests around the period. Again, on this, did you, your fathers or anyone else from Nigeria support Adaka Boro and Niger delta secession which Ironsi stopped? So this could only have bn raised against the Igbos to score cheap points.
Even at that, after the revenge coup in July 66, when Nigerians like Gbolahan got their wishes, what did they do with the opportunity? From the unification decree to not killing the coupists [including Adaka Boro who was imprisoned instead of facing execution], which one did Gowon and their British masters change after they assassinated Ironsi? They did not only keep it as it was, they made it more sophisticated. Till date we haven't recovered from the over-centralisation of power. How many more coups did we see after Jan 1966? Several coups over the years, upheld by thesame people suffering from 'Igbo-phobia'. If we are to weigh all coups, it is nonsensical that we still keep pointing at just that one coup. Today we all suffocate and cry for a restructure, yet it is the Igbos creating all the problems according to Gbolahan. Meanwhile Nigeria was well restructured at Aburi to solve all these problems. What happened to the Aburi agreements? Why was it not implemented? Who and who backtracked on the agreement? You wanna know who did? It was you and your fathers that did, not the Igbos.

Historyville, I commend you for your effort at bringing critical tales of the Nigerian political scene to the world. Some of your topics were well researched while others aren't such. I must say that this one falls under the less researched ones.
I believe you already know that the history propagated by the Nigerian government is one that conceals whatever that doesn't support their narration. As such, one can't rely on their stories to do justice on any topic which seeks to x-ray the truth therein. You ought to seek for more information from different sources to come up with the closest to the truth for the sake of your audience.
Below are key areas you left out in this topic on Isaac Adaka Boro.
    1. Adaka Boro did not challenge the federal government until a coup was attempted and crushed. Could it be that he found it easier to challenge a military government than a civilian one? Analysts will know that Boro's insurrection was sponsored from somewhere else. His overzealousness was exploited by some tricky politicians. His younger brother, David Boro later admitted to him getting support from the north to start the insurrection/revolution. Where did he get the resources to organize weapons and other logistics for someone not connected to any government or wealthy organization?
    2. How easy was it for Boro who was seeking for Niger Delta republic to turn round and fight to preserve the same Nigeria that was exploiting his people? Zeal without wisdom leads to destruction. He was simply used by the north and silenced after his services wasn't needed anymore.
    3. After his insurrection was crushed by Ironsi, he was arrested, tried and sentenced to death but Ironsi due to his nature instead commutted it to life sentencing. You clearly omitted this.
Sentiments aside, Adaka Boro was to his credit a fiery young man whose heart burned for his people. His zeal was unquestioned but his wisdom was tainted by prejudice against Igbos which sadly remains with many of his people till today. He never rose against Balewa's civilian government but rather chose to rise against Ironsi's government. Some stories had it that his prejudice emanated from his experience at UNN. He was on an Eastern government scholarship in the school and even rose to become her Student Union Government president. The Igbos supported him.
What else could have been his problem?
Finally, to all those that choose to celebrate him as a hero, it is your right to make your decisions but my hope is that you don't get sucked into the same mistake he made. I believe he started to realize his mistake before he was killed by those who employed him. By my observation, most of those who celebrate Isaac Adaka Boro easily take Igbos as their default enemies. To them I say, the 1960s is gone forever. We are in the 21st Century and your land is still being milked strangers from afar. What are you going to do about now? Are you going to wait until another Igbo man becomes the president before you start?

Secondly, it was the East that did the first coup Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu and Emmanuel Ifeajuna (Timothy Onwuatueghu, Chris Anuforo, Humphrey Chukwuma and one Yoruba man Adewale Ademoyega whom was brainwashed just like many now,) what tribes names are these?? IGBO. Now, many Igbos would argued, meanwhile one of these Igbos names is from Delta State or South South as if they will not use the same names argument when claiming others. mind you, what about the other Igbo names? Nzeogwu might have come from the now Delta State but he was those Igbos that migrated to that location early on. That doesn't make them the original owners of the lands. The entire South South and South East of Nigeria has their ancestors traces from The Great Benin. Including some of the Igbos like Azikiwe already said. If Delta State and other Southern where part of East, they would not have be regarded as Benin Bight or like the later Midwest region such as Edo and Delta. So, Igbos created the coup and the war cause they will never be satisfied. Left for them alone, they should own every part of Nigeria and they should igbonized the entire country. But it's impossible because before Igbos, there was. Even when they had the power they were still not satisfied. Their brother Aguiyi Ironsi came in and did nothing about those that murdered our prime minister and others. Igbos can blame and blames other except for themselves. Look at the killings now, that can killing in the East. Guess what? they will blame Hausas/ Fulanis or Government for their Igbos Igbos killings.
