    As someone who has shot on 16mm before and graded it in davinci, I think you guys are pushing the look a bit too far. It may come down to taste here, but if you want to actually emulate the film stock instead of created a final graded look you should tone down the entire thing by about 25%. You can tell in a lot of these clips the the colors are getting too saturated and clipping (probably because of the 8-bit footage) and the shadows feel lifted. Film CAN look like this, but in actual movies the look is not pushed this far so that it is easier on the audience's eyes. I see this a lot with digital emulations where the colorists push the look farther than it should go to overcompensate for it being DSLR/mirrorless footage.

    Hey quick follow up is there a way to change the CST to the correct input for every single clip so i dont have to go in manually selecting each clip and changing my input color space along with input gamma. This would save me a ton of time and still my first day using davinci, thanks so much!

    • @meliorstudios

      Hey Jake, yes there is! If all the clips require the same CST you can save the node tree you’ve created with the CST settings you’ve chosen then save that as a powergrade in itself by using the powergrades tab in the Colour page. We’ve made a tutorial on how to do this: th-cam.com/video/j-qRovmIDrU/w-d-xo.html

    one question i always had was why you are shooting in ITU709 and not S-Gamut? I also heard from other people that the color are better on ITU709... I am shooting with S-Gamut and the only Problem is that i have a lot of Magenta Shift (idk how its called)

    • @meliorstudios
      @meliorstudios  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s exactly the reason why! On the Sony A7iii, sgamut gives incredibly strong magenta tones which is hard to adjust in post. Using ITU.709, gives a much cleaner image to work with, this is only a problem with the Sony A7iii and older Sony cameras.

      @meliorstudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Yasemin, This is the only film emulation powergrade we've used and it's worked a treat for us in enabling us to create the look we wanted. And with lips usually being more saturated than the rest of the skin you can use the the qualifer to create a mask on the lips, selecting the magenta areas, then simply shift the hue towards the oranges. You can do this all when selecting the entire skin to shift the colours away from magenta. Another way is to use the colour warper and shift the red points towards the yellow

    • @meliorstudios
      @meliorstudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Joran, we’re sorry to hear that, the footage when CST is completed will be a little bit flat especially with cineon but shouldn’t be super flat like a log profile. If that’s the cast it’s probably your CST settings. Make sure you double check your camera settings, I.e. colour space and colour gamma. If you’re using S-gamut make sure you’ve selected s-Gammut in the correct field of the CST. If you’ve used something other than s-gamut such as ITU.709, make sure you’re selecting rec.709. On the A7iii slog3 had no greater effect than Slog2 due to its sensor. But slog3 is much flatter than Slog2 which makes it harder to grade as well well the image falls apart more easily compared to Slog2 on the A7iii. On the A7siii slog3 can be used no doubt but for what we found Slog2 give a much cleaner image
