Been watching your channel for last 12 months thought I would have a look back at when you started and no surprise you were cooking great food at the start aswell😊👍
Pat, i’ve been going back to where I started with watching your old videos and they are great but I notice how much you’ve developed it. One thing I notice is that you have totally eradicated the ‘err” and that must have been so hard. I sometimes video myself teaching and it surprises me how often I say ‘err’ ‘erm’. I don’t know how I’d get rid because it’s a nervous thing but well done on it because it makes the vids so much slicker. The cooking in this video is just fantastic.
Haha, yes I remember my, erm day, still find myself doing it, it sort of gives me thinking time I think. More aware of it and I make a effort now, just a couple of erm,s thanks Pat
Mister Teach Hi I have tried to locate Cathedral but nut seen it yet waiting for a clear day and hopefully with binoculars should see it all the best Pat
Your vids do piss me of a bit as I wish I had done this sort of adventure when I was younger. Really love watching these videos. Very well done, thanks.
Hi sorry for delay must of missed comment, as mentioned in video its a great lightweight shelter and so easy to set up when your tired. Its also very comfortable keeping the material off your face and giving a bit of space. Thanks for watching Pat
Your right Patrick low profile on the Bivvy. Ideal for stealth camping on Private land even. Wow what a view and an even more impressive meal. Wonderful seat there....it completes the camp site. I must say a fabulous sleeping bag tip...many thanks for that I will be following it up. Already got the website up. Until next time all the best. Mark.
Hi Mark, Yes the Rab Ridge raider is a great bivvy lightweight but with the hoop a bit more livable. Still like to use a basic bivvy bag sometimes in summer, get really close to nature then. Thanks for watching all the best Pat
Patrick Dickinson Hi there Pat. Yes I like to be close to the circulating air. It's why I like a tarp. I get an awesome nights sleep and totally recharge. A pleasure to watch and a friendly voice to listen to. Many thanks. Mark.
Wow!!! the heather is stunning up there and the gear reviews at the end was very helpful as I am toying with the idea of the Ridge Raider and one cant complain with a 10lb pack. Thank you for sharing the trip and your knowledge
+James Thomson Thanks for watching James seems a while since I made this video but its a great way to wild camp as gear is cut back to a minimum and very lightweight and you can camp basically anywhere. All the best for coming year thanks, Pat
Patrick Dickinson Thanks for your kind word's. I am currently building up a light weight kit at the moment, I am in two minds about a bivy or the mil tec one man tent. All the best for this year and im subscribed
Great video mate.... I used to take every bit of kit and the kitchen sink on wild camps!!!! But I'm now in the process of cutting right back and trying the light weight approach.. The bivvy looked very good... So did the food.. ATB - Marcus
Hi Marcus Yep I think we all start out with too much gear and weight but when those rucksack straps are digging into your shoulders for few hours sure has a good effect of making you reduce weight. I don,t go super lightweight as I still like a bit of comfort and like to be warm and comfortable at night.the food weighs a ton but its only a one way journey. all the best Pat
+Tony Cheetham Yes a fire does add to it but a bit of a givaway with the smoke bur if you can find a hidden spot in some woods a bit more remote then would be great. Thanks Pat
Hi Terry Hopefully spring is not far off and time to get out bivvying again, only feels a few months ago when I bivvy out there time just flies. Thanks Pat
Hi Chris well thats great once you start you will be planning your next trip as soon as you get back, very addictive and pure adventure, all the best Pat
What fantastic views you have from there and so near to home, amazing that you might see as far away as Lincoln, thats about 50 miles away as the crow flies. I could almost smell the bacon, you can get British style bacon over here but only close to the tourist areas they dont sell it here here where I am in Granada!! Plenty of morcilla though!! Good luck from Spain!!
+aacraws Hi there glad you enjoyed the video , As the weather starts to get colder and darker I pack my bivvy away and go back to my tent. I hope you enjoy your wild camping, and thanks for watching, Pat
i should add, i always use a tarp ( DD hammocks lightweight small ) as my porch extension together with my Coshee 2 tent, works great, acres of space and a pretty good weight too.
Carl jervis, hi patrick im a newcomer to hiking and camping and wanted to say thank you for sharing your adventures, really educational and most importantly fun , long may the adventures continue cheers.
Hi Carl not sure if I missed your comment or just youtube playing up anyway glad you enjoyed video, yes wild camping can be a lot of fun and adventure, just great to be out in the wilds. thanks again Pat
+moedem Hi there I know what you mean, sometimes I have bivvied on public campsites when gone away with friends who have slept in normal tent. I felt very vulnerable of a car running over me so made sure I bivvied next to a tree or car so protected a bit. On the moors where I bivvy on my own feel very safe as only a few sheep and deer about and tentd to keep clear of you. Thanks for watching Pat
klnaraa74 Hi there nice to hear from you in India, very impressed with the number and quality of videos you have made. I look forward to winter to do some really wild camping. Thanks Pat
O defenatly meal is one of the best parts, have you tried doing steaks on a hot rock whilst out its unreal once you try it no steak ever tastes the same. no probs keep the videos coming
I've come back to this video. One thing you said £200. For the tent why does it not have any ties at the foot end to make it stay up higher to allow better foot room. What do you think. I love your idea of the footprint to protect the bottom of the tent.
Thanks Pat,I’ve bought a Robens starlight 1 and we have a caravan over the lakes ,so going to use that as a base and do a bit wild camping, once this Covid is sorted .you are obviously a seasoned camper and more .love your videos .keep it gannin .
Started a couple of years ago when I borrowed my wife,s small vidio camera to film the Lancaster flypast over Derwent resorvoir, then progressed to a SLR. Good way of letting family and friends know what your up to.
Pat, that ridge raider looks great. Have you ever considered using a small (lightweight) tarp as a porch extension, you could sling it over the pole in the ridge raider, that way when you come out of the ridge raider you are still under cover, you could even cook under there without getting wet. Im sure with your fabrication skills, you could knock up a small tarp in no time.
Matt Last Hi Matt yes did thing of it and good idea, but add the weight of the tarp and the weight starts to get to tent weight, so might as well take a tent, or I pick my bivvying days without rain, thanks Pat
i agreer Pat, BUT.. even with your ridge raider + tarp, weight wise it would be tent weight....BUT it would be comfort wise way above a tent on its own since they have a porch which is tiny compared to my 2.8m x 1.5m tarp
Took me a while to watch this one Pat. A great camp and not far away from home. I've never used a bivvy. Isn't it a bit difficult if you're trying to go to bed or pack up with one if it's raining? It's handy if you have a stone table and chairs right enought: I had that situation on Arran two years ago camping at a spot on the coastal path called Falling Rocks so I used a couple for table and chair :-). The only sounds I had all night was waves on the rocks and bird call.
Hi Terry I suppose you sacrifice comfort with weight with a bivvy and a more adventurous type of camping. Must admit I pick my weather carefully and tend to bivvy in dry conditions, Cooking in the rain not please t, some people have adviced a tarp Good idea but weight of tarp and bivvy why not take my tent. Must admit once in the bivvy in cold wild weather it's really warm comfortable and secure, all the best Terry, Pat
Good to know they are warm and secure -I expect having a low profile helps in that respect. Being able to get online weather checks so easily these day is a real boon! Atb.
Hello pat great camp. Just wondering. The jacket you had on brand paramo . How did you get on with it? I had 2 and I find it hard to keep there water repellent to a good standard. I used the wash in bottles & spray but no way do they have that repellent when first few months of purchase. I done exactly what it said on the waterproof instructions. ???? Cheers Lawson
Really enjoyed your video, Patrick. I've a couple of questions - 1) where / how do you store your rucksack whilst sleeping ie inside or outside the bivi; 2) do you think condensation would be a problem for a long hike eg of several months duration; 3) is this bivi a side-opening one too? Thanks. June
+130June Hi June There is not alot of room to store gear in the bivvy, small things like camera gear wash kit etc are ok . The big items like you say are the rucksack and boots, I store these outside the rucksack in a waterproof stuff sack a large one and also can put clothing in, my boots which will be muddy I also store outside in a smaller stuff sack, even in summer I put them in bags or they get soaked in dew, a cheaper and lighter method is a couple of bin liners. As for condensation if not heavy rain I sleep with door partially open seems to cure it. Depends a bit on the weather if still and damp then you get condensation if cool and windy, then not much condensation. This bivvy the Rab Ridge Raider it is just front opening and a bit awkward to get in, but light. The Rab Ridge Master a later model has side opening front and rear poles, more comfortable but a bit more heavy. Hope this helps and hope you enjoy your bivvying adventures, Pat
Great video ,just looking at the bivi would it not be better to have a hooped pole on the bottom as well just curious.its midnight as i watch this and now i'm bloody starving you certainly have this camping off to a fine art.chers anto.
Anthony Kelly Hi Anto The bivvy I was using is the Rab ridge raider, Rab have a newer model called the Rab ridge master and as you mentioned it has a hooped pole at the bottom, this lifts the bivvy clear of your body but this extra pole adds more weight. I went for the Ridge Raider as I wanted to be as light as possible but with a bit of comfort. It's surprising what quality food you can cook with a couple of little stoves and it tastes great outdoors. Thanks for watching Pat
+Ian Macfarlane Hi Ian thanks for your comments, seems a while ago when we had dry weather, best weather for bivvy in. Anyway waiting for the snow now for a bit of winter wild camping but not sure if we will get much this year as it is so warm for this time of year, all the best Pat
Hi Gary Yes its a great location for overnight camp. The camera I used was a Sony Alpha SLT-A37 which I find great for video, I try and uses a external mic as it tends to cut out the wind noise, and it is usually windy up on the hills round here.
Hi thanks for comments,I try and reduce my pack weight as much as possible but I still like a bit of comfort. In summer months its easy to have a light pack but in winter everything is appears to be a bit more heavy
+St. Apollonius It was definitely wild where I camped on the moors, but shows you can eat really well even though you have limited cooking facilities. Thanks for watching and commenting Pat
GAMEOFDRONES hi yes always like my food don,t know where it all goes but I ,am never still from 7 in the morning until midnight, not enough hours in the day, thanks Pat
MrNiceSafe Hi the sleep mat I was using was a Vaude Norrskin matteres very light weight and ideal for summer, in winter I use a Exped matterss which is inflatable and also down filled for added insulation, hope helpful, Pat
Hi probably local to Peak District, a clough is a steep valley usually with a stream in the bottom Kinder Scout has around 20 cloughs round it, hope helpful, thanks Pat
markw031 Hi I can,t fully remember where the windshields came from I think the one on the right is from my MSR Whisperlight and the one on left is one I made by buying thin aluminium sheet. Thanks for watching Pat
+Jordan Worsfold Hi Jordan, that steak was beautiful piece of ribeye all the better to be cooked outdoors. The sleeping bag company is PHD , the initials of the owner Peter Hutchenson designs they specialise in quality down gear especially sleeping bags lots of info on there website. thanks for watching and comments, Pat
i've just purchases rab ridge raider after watching your videos, so thanks for the review and advice. After watching this video, my question is how do you manage to get such good audio in those wind conditions?
+TheEnrieb Hi you,ve made a good choice with the bivvy, so easy to set up, light and surprisingly warm in cold weather. I film mostly with a sony SLR camera but with a remote microphone sometimes on the camera or on a long lead near to me, to reduce the wind noise a foam sock is over the microphone . The microphone came with a foam sock and I have bought them on ebay. Hope you have some great wild camps with the bivvy all the best Pat
+Stevo 1971 Hi Steve I,'ve never seen Lincoln cathedral but I have read that on exceptional clear days you can see it whether with binoculars not sure, I think its about 50 miles away the power stations at Ferrybridge and Drax are about 30-35 miles away and can be easly seen most days so it may be possible to see the extra 20 miles. Thanks for watching and commenting Pat
Hi Patrick, what are your thoughts on wild camping in the Brecons, I've read that this is not allowed, but surely if you are tidy and respect others is this ok? We've got a kit list, probably too much, what are your thoughts on camping knives? are these required. Do you have a video on kit for a single night away?
Hi Andy, not familiar with the Brecons but like anywhere in the UK , apart from Scotland it accepted that you can wild camp as long as you camp late , leave early and nobody knows you have been there. I usually carry a knife, I carried a sheath knife for years then realised it was illegal so I carry a folding knife now, find it useful for a variety of thinks, most of my camps are just one nighter,s hope helpful Pat.
Hi Patrick, thanks for the response. Do you ever camp in a group or do you prefer your own company. A friend and me are going to the Brecons in November with our new Vango Banshee 300, not as robust as yours, but hopefully up the job. Good advice on the knife!
can one walk or go about anywhere on any piece of land there in England Pat? seems Ive read about this.forget what it was called, but I mean here in the states if one walked across someones land, well they might shoot ya lol.England would be a wonderful place to visit I think
Hi yes we have the right to roam on majority of wild moorlands etc, wild camping is not allowed in England but everybody does as long as they are discreet and respectful to the landowner it is acceptable. There is still a lot of private farmland etc were you could only camp with permission, Pat
hi Richard if you go up Ringinglow Road out of Sheffield pass the Norfolk Arms pub after about a mile go right through a gate and walk up on to the moors for a mile that will get you to where I camped there are several area over looking the city of Sheffield in that area thanks Pat
Hi Pat - I want to try this but I don’t know where to start as everything is from past experience from the ones who know how ect like yourself . Which tent should a novice starter now choose ? Thanks in advance loving your content including the garden pub
As for gear to start with difficult, what you might want to spend might influence you, I,ve built my gear up over the years, but not changed anything for years. Hope you sort some gear out and get out there soon..... thanks Pat
Been watching your channel for last 12 months thought I would have a look back at when you started and no surprise you were cooking great food at the start aswell😊👍

Hi sorry for delay must of missed comment, as mentioned in video its a great lightweight shelter and so easy to set up when your tired. Its also very comfortable keeping the material off your face and giving a bit of space. Thanks for watching Pat

Hi Marcus Yep I think we all start out with too much gear and weight but when those rucksack straps are digging into your shoulders for few hours sure has a good effect of making you reduce weight. Thanks for the great video. It is very well made and informative. I am looking into doing some wild camping.
+aacraws Hi there glad you enjoyed the video , As the weather starts to get colder and darker I pack my bivvy away and go back to my tent. I hope you enjoy your wild camping, and thanks for watching, Pat
Great video pal. Uncomplicated yet informal. More soon I hope.
Thanks for comments hoping to camp when first snow arrives
My favorite time to camp is autumn and winter. How did your tent perform
i should add, i always use a tarp ( DD hammocks lightweight small ) as my porch extension together with my Coshee 2 tent, works great, acres of space and a pretty good weight too.
Ok. Thanks for replying Pat. 👍🏻

Hi Stephen, probably due to weight, they do one with shooed poke at the bottom as well, I don,t really notice , thanks Pat
Great video Pat ,I don’t have a bivi ,it looks a great bit of kit ,maybe a small hoop at the feet would finish it off .
Hi Stephen, great bit of lightweight kit, the lack of a loop at the bottom end is not a problem, and saves a bit of weight, thanks Pat
Thanks Pat,I’ve bought a Robens starlight 1 and we have a caravan over the lakes ,so going to use that as a base and do a bit wild camping, once this Covid is sorted .you are obviously a seasoned camper and more .love your videos .keep it gannin .

what a feed!!! have you ever thought about a disposable bbq? would love to see you doing a barby and they aint heavy to carry
Not a bad idea Johnny, I like Barbie's and like!w you say they are lightweight, thanks for that, Pat

Awesome vid
Hi yes I remember this camp well was very lightweight and had some great food, thanks for watching Pat
i swear at 7-14 i could smell the soup.
Very nice it was as well, all the best Pat
Alright patrict. Great video and lovely location. Could you tell me what camera you were using. Cheers Gary.
Hi Gary
Yes its a great location for overnight camp.
The camera I used was a Sony Alpha SLT-A37 which I find great for video, I try and uses a external mic as it tends to cut out the wind noise, and it is usually windy up on the hills round here.
new subscriber love your videos I am currently working on an ultra light pack wild camp set up
Hi thanks for comments,I try and reduce my pack weight as much as possible but I still like a bit of comfort. In summer months its easy to have a light pack but in winter everything is appears to be a bit more heavy
I bought a lot of alp kit a warmer bag I wanted but gone for the down jacket in the bag approach
@9:58....... right.......whos hungry right now after seeing that !
Rib-eye steak ! Don't stint yourself ! I did manage to fry bacon and mushrooms for my last camping breakfast on my Trango meths cooker
Best food very is the food you cook on a wildcamp, thanks Pat
Wild camping with steak and wine.....sounds nearer to Glamping
+St. Apollonius It was definitely wild where I camped on the moors, but shows you can eat really well even though you have limited cooking facilities. Thanks for watching and commenting Pat
Got the right idea mate
Yeah great out there, thanks Pat
are you eating for two there Parrick at the 10 minute mark ..
wow that a meal for a hungry lad ..how you so slim..
GAMEOFDRONES hi yes always like my food don,t know where it all goes but I ,am never still from 7 in the morning until midnight, not enough hours in the day, thanks Pat
keep up the great vids
What was the sleeping mat make? Any suggestions for a good make would be appreciated.
MrNiceSafe Hi the sleep mat I was using was a Vaude Norrskin matteres very light weight and ideal for summer, in winter I use a Exped matterss which is inflatable and also down filled for added insulation, hope helpful, Pat
Cheers pat
quite expensive both mats...
What is a Clough? I"ve not seen or heard that word in the U.S.
Hi probably local to Peak District, a clough is a steep valley usually with a stream in the bottom Kinder Scout has around 20 cloughs round it, hope helpful, thanks Pat
What wind shields do you use for your stoves?
markw031 Hi I can,t fully remember where the windshields came from I think the one on the right is from my MSR Whisperlight and the one on left is one I made by buying thin aluminium sheet. Thanks for watching Pat
Hi Pat, great video pal. You've got me craving a steak now! What was that sleeping bag company again?
Cheers, Jordan
So do you find the Rab better than the Terra Nova bivvy?
jiberjaber I think I will of looked at both and decided the Rab fitted my needs better, very lightweight and easy to set up, thanks Pat
Patrick Dickinson thanks... :)
Why dont you get a PARA GLIDER and fly to the top of any moor super quick and adventurous..
Would love one if someone would buy me one that would be great, thanks Pat
Doubt very much you can see Lincoln cathedral from there
+Stevo 1971 Hi Steve I,'ve never seen Lincoln cathedral but I have read that on exceptional clear days you can see it whether with binoculars not sure, I think its about 50 miles away the power stations at Ferrybridge and Drax are about 30-35 miles away and can be easly seen most days so it may be possible to see the extra 20 miles. Thanks for watching and commenting Pat
I'll take your word for it Pat & keep doing the video's they're a pleasure to watch.
Boy. TH-cam campers always seem to eat really well.
Major part of any wild camp for me is the food, love cooking it and eating .....thanks Pat
Andy Windsor Hi Andy always on my own, it's how I like it,Pat
can one walk or go about anywhere on any piece of land there in England Pat? seems Ive read about this.forget what it was called, but I mean here in the states if one walked across someones land, well they might shoot ya lol.England would be a wonderful place to visit I think
Hi yes we have the right to roam on majority of wild moorlands etc, wild camping is not allowed in England but everybody does as long as they are discreet and respectful to the landowner it is acceptable. There is still a lot of private farmland etc were you could only camp with permission, Pat
You need some lids.
John Davies yeah I know it would cook more effectively with lids, but not so good for filming, thanks anyway, Pat
realy intrested in trying this place out any details plz
hi Richard if you go up Ringinglow Road out of Sheffield pass the Norfolk Arms pub after about a mile go right through a gate and walk up on to the moors for a mile that will get you to where I camped there are several area over looking the city of Sheffield in that area thanks Pat

Which tent should a novice starter now choose ?
Thanks in advance loving your content including the garden pub
As for gear to start with difficult, what you might want to spend might influence you, I,ve built my gear up over the years, but not changed anything for years. Hope you sort some gear out and get out there soon..... thanks Pat
