I like the concept of this series! A suggestion if you continue on with it is for both you and Fabien (or some other guest) to give your opinion on whether the wine is over or underrated. You could both have queue cards or signs that you hold up at the same time with either "overrated" or "underrated", which gives the added element of being able to have some banter about differing opinions.
Masseto at $800/bbl, I've not had it either, but Le Volte or le Serre Nuove (Ornellaia) and Guidalberto (Sassacaia) are where the great under rated ST reds are
Love your videos! I did a wine tasting of Supertuscans last week in London and these my top 5: 1-masseto 2004 2-SASSICAlA 2006 3-Tignanello 2009 4-Ornellaia 2015 & Solaia 2017 We must have a similar taste as I also preferred Tignanello over O&S.. but the vintage factor may have played a role..O&S were probably still too young
love this! agree on most. especially Tignanello. what’s your opinion on Flaccianello? that’s my favourite Tuscan wine. some people don’t put it in the Super Tuscan category though, since it’s 100% Sangiovese.
I really like the concept and there is some good info packed in here! High yield. I was waiting for Castello dei Rampolla-Sammarco. Another popular wine that I'm curious what you think of.
Fun video Matt. I think the common theme here is price/quality. All of these wines are decent stuff but the elevated prices make us demand more. Being 'blown away' by every bottle of wine we open is a tall ask but experienced drinkers have in their minds an idea of what to expect for the money. I really believe it effects our opinion. Export prices for these wines are steep but they can be hardly any different in Tuscany itself. I remember being in Montalcino and the prices were well and truly aimed at the tourists. The wine is very good but the prices are steep. That's the story for a lot of countries including France and the U.S.A. If you want real underrated gems you have to look under the radar. WT
Masseto costs 1000$ in Germany. Why should I buy this if some of the best Merlots of the world cost about half price? Why should I buy Petrus if La Conseillante get's the same rating? I once drank Chateau Latour, awsome wine! But I can remember dozens of moments I enjoyed wine of this level for a fraction of the price. I remember some video you made about value. And I am straight on your line: I can buy Tignanello for 100$, it's still a blend with Sangiovese. I like it very much. So why should I pay for a Bordeaux blend from Toscana double the price of Chateau Montrose?
I've had a bit of Tignanello, sassiacaia, and masetto...pretty spendy runnin upto 500 at restauants. How I sold any of these?? Run through see whats in there, huge wine list. I found a 1996 Masetto, its big Merlot. We had it since 97. One of our Brunello fans I gave a deal fer 300. Other wise its a trophy on the wall. But thats how I had the last bit in the bottle. Very famous Super Tuscans, Allot of em. Its history and geography. Allot of travel talk with high end clientee too!!
@@drmatthewhorkey Woo HOO !!!! Paolo is such a class act ! BTW, we were gonna have my 2000 Tignanello last weekend but it had no fruit left. So disappointed with a wine that has such high esteem. We had the Flacinello instead albeit so much younger.
We need honest and unbiased [ie no vested interest of whatever form in the item being commented] view from an experienced person in the field. If people do not agree with the view then they can go ahead with their own choice, or buy a bottle to verify themselves. So, Dr. Bravo!
@@JackRosei it’s more drinkable out of the gate than most serious Super Tuscans, and hits peak at about 10+ years. That, of course, is if you want to drink Tuscan merlot!
Depending on your budget, Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Solaia are all great wines. Quite a step above Tignanello. If you have the money, they are not overrated at all IMO. I also like Fotalloro more than Rancia, the older 2006-2007 vintages, haven't tried the younger ones.
Finally one who tells some truth, evidently they haven't bought you yet. All Supertuscans are overrated, especially that little wine called Tignanello. Scores and prizes paid handsomely by buying self-styled experts for pale hyperalcoholic imitations of the great Bordeaux. For 100 euro per bottle you can also buy it in presumptuous when so want to imitate the Bordeaux prices are really ridiculous.
super episode! i didn't like solaia 1 bit, love all from isole-olena, ornellaia was tops but the creme-de-la creme was 1996 MASSETO, infinitely superior to shitty petrus 1976...

Nice choices too, there are plenty of others to be found in the sub 30$ category too
Good video format. Lot of useable info packed into short form. Look forward to more.
Thank you!
Great vid! Tignanello’s pricing seems to have risen through, and almost on par with Ornellaia (at least here in Singapore).
It has risen significantly!

Loooveeee it!
Would you recommend the TIGNANELLO ANTINORI 2019? It's pricey @ 320SGD in a restaurant.
Good wine up to you if you want to spend for it

LOL I love the wine insider joke “high yield”. More of these to come!
I had a few Castello dei Rampolla-Sammarco, great wines :)
My Goal is to try all your underrated wines here - If I can fine them here in Ontario CA- thank you so much !
Good luck and have fun!
That was some great fun to make this 😀
Yes it was, it was fun to edit too heheheh

Italian wine pricing can be funny in USA and sometimes they are better priced here than in Italy.

100% agree that Isole e Olena is underrated. Paulo di Marchi makes some spectacular Cepparello and Vin Santo !!!
You’ll see Cepparello in the channel soon😉

What about Flaccianello?
Didn’t come up hahahha but my hot take is that I prefer Vigna del Sorbo
Argentiera is great!! Prices have creeped up though.. Saffredi is another gem, Messorio, Galatrona are much better buys than a Masseto
agreed... I think you might like this then... th-cam.com/video/qO4tO-HF3dY/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for stopping by and the comments. I am a big fan of what you said, people should taste and verify themselves. It was fun to do this episode.

Hahhahaha thank you!
Do Argentine Malbecs or Napa Cabernets.
;)
@@drmatthewhorkey I've never had Sassicaia but I feel better now having never splurged on it. Tignanello all the way.
would like to see an overrated/underrated bit on Piedmont

Enjoyed this 👍🏽

Hilarious and excellent! I feel the Geremia is under rated - I do get it in good vintages even though I have become sceptical of this entire category!
Thanks Vlad, I haven’t had the Geremia yet… there’s always new stuff to try.
@@drmatthewhorkey Geremia is a Merlot with a bit of Cab from Rocca di Montegrossi. In good vintages I think it may be the best Super Tuscan QPR!

That was my point, bc of the price :)
All the Super Tuscans are overpriced.
