Sounds like a classic case of someone who loves funk but doesn't get soul music. I used to be exactly like that when I was 3. Give it time, the soul ballads grow on you the more you expose yourself to them. You jumped in the deep end with Stevie. Start more accessible like Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Bill Withers, Whitney Houston, Ashford & Simpson, and then work your way up to Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Barry White, Isaac Hayes, Gamble & Huff.

Also, Stevie is so influential in all genres of music that it's backward to say that he sounds like Beyonce, etc. He was the original influence. The brass in most of the music is from him coming up in Motown. Young folks exploring older music is cool because they can see where stuff originated.

Great reaction! I’m a huge Stevie fan and though many people believe this is his best album, my personal favorite is his previous album “Fulfillingness’ First Finale”. The two previous albums “Talking Book” and “Innervisions” are also great listens.

I put Music of my mind above all, cause it was fresh and groundbreaking. As if a new music was born on earth. Followed by Fulfillingness FF and Talking book

"Isn't She Lovely" was a song written about his Daughter. "Hotter Than July" is another great album.

@@dylanholmes8186 I’m agreeing with you and also saying that while yes the song may go on a bit, that compared to the fact that this song is about Stevie’s first born, that if the reactor had a child, that she probably wouldn’t be so quick to down the song and would probably make a 20 minute lackluster track about her first born if she were in Stevie and or your shoes…

On the original vinyl it was a double album that concluded with 'another star' and the final four songs were on a bonus 7"

Maybe you had to be there. This project took us on a complete journey. No obligation to be dance music or about love or social action. It was a bunch of things. It is important to listen to “sides” straight through. As and Another Star are 2 are the best duos ever

It's really sad that you don't appreciate the genius of Stevie...but of course you wouldn't!!! It's really good to see that you're the only critic that don't like his true sense and feelings of his discography 😢...ijs however I do appreciate your honesty 🤔

I crooked my eyebrow a bit at some of your observations until I realized you're more into Metal than Soul/R&B, that's cool, different strokes as they say. Perhaps, mid-70s Isley Brothers would be a better "gateway" for you, esp. "Go For Your Guns."

Regardless of your own opinion on the album and the various tracks, you remind me a lot of myself listening to music as a kid. Very instinctive, very sensitive to the lyrics' writing and how deep or shallow they might seem to me, maybe sensitive to certain moods more than others and always jumping to my own quick impressions in a very narrow-minded way. If I'm not mistaken, you were born in the 90s just as I was? In fact, I'm a big Björk fan and if I understood correctly, you're a Radiohead fan. The problem with being a reactor is that it tends to make you consume lots of music in a very throw-away manner. You keep what impressed you and you trash the rest. But hoping for you that you also grow out of that way of listening, as I did. You will probably lose that high but you will enjoy yourself a lot more than you do now.

    A few Stevie Wonder greats..(IMHO)
    Fingertips Pt 2
    Uptight (Everything's Alright)
    A Place In The Sun
I Was Made To Love Her
    For Once In My Life
    My Cherie Amour
    Signed Sealed Delivered I'm Yours
    Superstition
    Higher Ground
    OK, that's enough.
I hope you love your new place!

My mother had this album but she only liked a few songs on it and never played the whole thing (ah, the good ol' days where you had to buy the whole album just to get at the few good songs you liked). I heard "Sir Duke", "I wish" and maybe a couple of others on repeat. For the longest time I never knew 'As' was on the album and asked everyone which Stevie Wonder song had the lyrics about the 'earth going around the sun' because I was in LOVE with that song. 😂

I like Stevie but some of this material isn't for me as well. I personally think the album Innervisions is a better listen. It is half the length of this album and is much more focused on upbeat material.

Yeah I'm with you on this - it's too long overall. Some amazing highlights for sure, but Talking Book (1972)
and Innervisions (1973) are so much more concise and therefore better overall in my opinion.
It's as if there's something too self indulgent about 'classic' double albums where they needed someone
to come in and say "right cut this one", "trim this down", etc.
(I feel the same way about Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Beatles's White Album too)

After viewing this channel I’m more convinced than ever that: far more people “listen”-than the chosen few who actually “hear”.
    Such is life.
This is STEVIE WONDER you’re attempting to critique, child.
    Please be aware that:
you are in no way qualified to do that.
But, fret not. When life has done it’s job of putting wrinkles on your face and experience in your heart?…give this album another listen. The
unrecognized wisdom that you can’t possibly see today?…will be patiently waiting for you later. That is:
    if you survive your youth.
    Blessings.
“Wisdom is wasted on the old.
Youth is wasted on the young.”
    George Bernard Shaw
