    OMG, whoever picked this one really wanted to scramble your brains. The tune alternates between 4/4, 19/16, and 21/16 time signatures, and Vinnie Coliuta on drums is absolutely nuts. Just grip the armrests and enjoy the ride. This is FZ at his complex best.

      For us mortals, 19/16 is the same as the 4/4 with 3 extra 16ths. The 21/16 is 5/4 with one extra 16th. They meet only one 16th short of 25 bars. This signature was used only for the studium version, as they were not able to replicate it on stage (there are some people who managed to do it, using click track).

    In order to fully appreciate the work, Joe's Garage Acts I,II, and III need to be listed to in it's entirety, start to finish, without interruption. It will take about a two hour bite out of your life to do it, but you will never regret it, and at least once or twice during that time you will utter the phrase, "How the fuck is he doing that??" It is a Rock Opera, and you only understand the message if you hear it all. Doesn't have to be a reaction video, just do it for yourselves. It is an incredible piece of work.

    I believe the bass player is Arthur Barrow who played with Zappa from the late 70s to early 80s. As you liked this song you should really check out "City of Tiny Lights", the live version (1977 Halloween) featuring Adrian Belew on vocals, is really a great version.
    Side note: Adrian Belew is a legendary guitarist whose known for his amazing guitar tone. I'm really fond of his 80s-2000s solo work such as "Looking for a U.F.O.", "Birds", or "1967".

      @@jayburdification Oh yea, for solo Adrian Belew Lone Rhinoceros is excellent. I first discovered Belew by listening to Zappa and I fell in love with his first 8 or 9 albums. I never really got into his newer stuff for some reason. But songs like: Young Lions, Inner Revolution, Birds, Big Blue Sun, The Gulf In The War Between Us, The Rail Song, Burned By The Fire We Make.... (Trust me, I could easily keep going.) LOL
      I'm a guitarist so naturally I'm very attracted to his playing style but most of all his sound. Belew is known as a genius for the huge variety of different guitar tones he's able to come up with. I also love his song writing, at least for those first 8 or 9 albums. He reminds me a lot of The Beatles. Very catchy songs that stick in your head.

    This song is peak xenochrony -- Frank would take a tape of one of his live guitar solos, isolate it, and then write a whole new song around the live solo. You get a song that sounds totally wild and improvised on the spot (because it was) and also tightly composed and planned (also because it was). This whole album is full of that technique and every guitar solo on the album except for Watermelon in Easter Hay uses it.

    • @EmptyGlass99

    Vinnie plays the drum part which is in 19/16. Sometimes he plays a backbeat on 2 and 4 making it sound like 4/4 with 3/16 or 5/4 with 1/16 missing. Other times he does a 7/16 5/16 and 7/16 thing.

    please delete if too long. frank pioneered xenochrony starting in the early 60's. from the wiki he explains: A classic "Xenochrony" piece would be "Rubber Shirt", which is a song on the album. It takes a drum set part that was added to a song at one tempo. The drummer was instructed to play along with this one particular thing in a certain time signature, eleven-four, and that drum set part was extracted like a little piece of DNA from that master tape and put over here into this little cubicle. And then the bass part, which was designed to play along with another song at another speed, another rate in another time signature, four-four, that was removed from that master tape and put over here, and then the two were sandwiched together. And so the musical result is the result of two musicians, who were never in the same room at the same time, playing at two different rates in two different moods for two different purposes, when blended together, yielding a third result which is musical and synchronizes in a strange way. That's Xenochrony. And I've done that on a number of tracks.

    Yes, this is a great rhythm section. Everybody knows Vinnie Colaiuta is an extraterrestrial. Frank gave him the Grand prize for the best drummer. And (almost) all the drummers Frank had were world class. Arthur Tripp, Ainsley Dunbar, Ralph Humphrey, Chester Thompson, Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman... It couldn't get any better. Even Jimmy Carl Black was a very very interesting player. The bass player here is Arthur Barrow. Unfortunately Arthur didn't´t receive the credit he deserves. He, Vinnie and Frank made the best power trio. If you want to know how a group of musicians work as a unit, listen for example those solos on Shut up and play your guitar (e. g. The deathless horsie). These are true musicians who are listening to each other and reacting creatively to what is going on. Within such framework Frank's guitar storytelling flies high..

    Another song with great lyrics is "Any Kind of Pain" on his Broadway the Hard Way album. First verse:
    You are the girl somebody invented
    In a grim little office
    On Madison Av
    They were specific
    They made you terrific
    Blonde hair, Nice clothes
    See her, she blows
    She's so important 'cuz she
    gets to do talk shows.
    You'd take any kind of pain
    Wouldn't you, baby (2x)
    Since you haven't got a brain, let me just explain
    Any Kind of Pain
    Is never a maybe.
    This was played by the large band in 1988 that had 5 Horns. Live recording.

    this song gives me some "rump relief"..... love this song..... so stupid and dirty but also nerdy math-like complicated.... I tried to dance to this song once and broke both my ankles.
    I tried to play this on our living room stereo with my dad home sometimes...... I'd leave the house, after putting it on loud..... then wait to hear how long it took for him to turn it off...
    and I'd wait to hear what swear words he chose.... my dad hated Frank maybe most of all.... maybe that's partly why I like him as much as I do.
    this song reminds me of that line from the Amadeus movie.... "there's too many notes."

  • @Peter-K
    @Peter-K 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    FZ's lyrics were certainly secondary to the music, but they were not just thrown together to fill up space. Lost in his musical prowess was his mastery of language, the man could spin a tale...and melodically at that. Songs like Trouble Every Day and most of the songs from his first few albums were as politically relevant as they were musically off the wall. His satirical abilities were at the forefront in songs like Cosmic Debris and Pojama People, to name just a couple. The entire 3 album set of Joe's garage tells a grand story, and this one was just a sliver. If you heard all that led up to this song, the relevance of the lyrics would be entirely different for you. A couple of his lyrical excursions that they should listen to are Titties and Beer and The Legend of the Illinois Enema Bandit from Zappa in New York, the former mainly lyrics with just a simple background melody, and the other an epic live performance of a song only Zappa could have wrote. Just saying, don't diminish his lyrical skills even though the music is the driving force behind it.

    • @SightAfterDark
      @SightAfterDark  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not diminishing, just saying the music seems like the main focus. Would you agree?

    • @Peter-K
      @Peter-K 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SightAfterDark absolutely the music is the main focus, but there are plenty of lyrics he wrote that actually do convey a strong message. Most of his lyrics were spawned from his experiences performing on the road, musicians, groupies, hippies, and a plethora of American subcultures were fodder for the stories he chose to tell. Though he said he preferred all instrumental music, he used his lyrics to throw shade at many things. Love is the subject of most music, so he avoided it and distilled it down to sex instead. He has a few 'love' songs, but I always saw them as sarcastic, more of a parody piece than your typical love song. He released a song called 'Jewish Princess' (Really nasty lyrically) and was asked to apologize for it by the Anti-Defamation League. He replied to their request with this, "Unlike the unicorn, such creatures do exist - and deserve to be 'commemorated' with their own special opus.' He was utterly unapologetic for what he said or did, he was about as Un-PC as someone could be. He has a lot of songs that no other artist would ever consider a subject for song lyrics, and he especially liked to skewer what he considered the 'mass stupidity' that is the undercurrent of American culture, or lack thereof. Once you get to hear some of these songs you will see what I mean. I hope that clarifies what I was saying, but I responding to the comments you made to the effect that he could have used any lyrics and it wouldn't matter, that is not really the case. He was a driven man, and I doubt there was anything he did that he did not plan out meticulously, and that includes his lyrics. You just haven't heard enough yet to see it, but I am sure you will.

      Excellently well said. You pretty much nailed it.
      That being said, one should also keep in mind that Frank said more than once that his motto was "anything, anytime, anywhere", and that he had a sardonic sense of humor. So, it wasn't beyond him to very occasionally do something just to be silly.

    The bassist is Arthur Barrow, not Scott. He came later. Arthur had the distinction of being one of FZ's "clonemeisters"; the guy that knew the music so well he ran the fist half of rehearsal before Frank showed up. Scott was the clonemeister for the '84 and '88 tours. Bass players are quite often MDs aren't they?
