I live in Chiang Rai Thailand and my mechanic had a 1200 cc V- Max.
He and I would ride though the mountains and I loved riding his bike, the only thing I didn't like was in the sharp hairpin curves! The front end felt very loose and unstable!
But on the straight away it was kick ass!

Rode a 1985 about twenty some years ago. I was unable to get on it because it was the model that had straight cut gears that would jump. My cousin still owns this bike and upgraded the transmission to fix this issue. It’s a classic 35 year old bike today.

Love the power and the vboost. I had an 83 Honda Magna V65 1100, my riding buddy had a 90 VMax. We were very close in performance, but the VMax was faster. My bike was more comfortable. The VMax had a smaller tank, needed gas more often.

I got to test ride an original vmax and the newer 1700 vmax as I used to work at a dealer. The original was fun, but kind of scary in the corners with that heavy steering. The 1700 is an absolute blast. Seating is comfortable, it's got insane torque with that massive motor. The one gripe I had was the shaft drive being a bit jerky in the corners when modulating throttle inputs. If you use just a bit of rear brake that goes away. Both fun bikes.

John, I owned a Vmax1200. There were a couple of things that I did not like about the bike, but the biggest was the range on a tank. I typically will ride a "loop ride" where I live (east of Redding, CA). You know, a ride where 1/2 way through the ride, you stop and have a sandwich, bs with your friends on the ride, then head on back home. These "loops" can be 150 miles with no gas stations (country road only) through the mountains. Well, I got rid of my Vmax because I could not ride it without running out of gas and I did not want to carry a can on my bike or my back full of gas! So, I sold it and bought a 2006 BMW K1200R Sport. The BMW kills the 2004 Vmax that I had. The front end on those BMWs are unique, the handling is superb, and the engine is a monster.... If you get a chance to ride a BMW K1200 or 1300 with the inline 4 (across the frame inline like the Japanese bikes), they are killer bikes. No regrets getting rid of my Vmax.... My next bike will be a BMW K1200R.... Naked standard...

My first bike was a 2015 Yamaha VMAX... What can I say? I knew what I wanted, and after 6 months, I have put 3k+ miles on it and love it! I respect her and what she can do... My only complaints are the front turn signal lights (which I want to replace with halo intake turn signals) and, well, she only gets about 100 miles on a full tank (or less if I am spinning tires at stop lights). 😅

I bought used 1999 Vmax 14 years ago, still have it today. I've only put 33,000 miles on it though. The Vmax treated me very well, only left me waking twice, battery went bad once and I ran it out of gas on the interstate once because the reserve didn't work.

Get your leg over the 2nd Gen already and get what Yamaha engineers truly envisioned: 21st century tech as in a proper frame, brakes, suspension, 200 hp, actual air intakes etc, etc...with the gnarly factor cranked to 11. As much as I love both gen's, the '85-'07 is a dinosaur compared to the '09-'20 Akira bike. Be quick though, it's officially discontinued as of this year in North America and has been already for a few years in Europe. Watch a legend become myth with the price to match as they become much harder to get your hands on one!
