You have to be supremely confident in your material to deliver lines as slowly as Anthony does. For most comedians, if a joke bombs they're immediately onto the next joke. If Anthony's joke bombs, that bomb just sits there like a big failure matzo ball.

I'm pretty sure I've heard someone say that Anthony used to practice by going out and bombing intentionally just to try to dig himself out of the hole. Start off with a terrible joke just to piss everyone off. I may be remembering about a different comic though. So take that with a grain of salt.

@@Algorythmfpv It sounds like a very Tosh thing to do. Johnny Carson was famous for his recovery material, to the point where bad jokes were intentionally put into his monologue from time to time.
Yeah, the only guys I know who pull that off are Steven Wright and Todd Barry, but they’re both completely different in every other way. Mitch Hedberg was a little like that as well, because his delivery was a lot slower in that stage character he does.
Also, to a lesser extent was Emo Phillips, he uses more pitch variation in his delivery, but it all kinda sounds the same and is relatively flat for the character he’s doing.
Anyone who has a stage persona that they’re locked into like that is in trouble if they start to bomb, because you can’t just stop being Dice Clay or Larry the Cable Guy halfway through the set if the jokes aren’t working. Someone more animated, like Dane Cook or Kevin Hart is going to be able to throw their whole body behind a mediocre joke, and really sell it by acting things out or doing a funny voice.
Guys like Jeselnik, Wright and Barry are also in a tough spot because their jokes are legitimately so funny that almost anyone can deliver them and get laughs because it’s all in the writing. Whereas someone like Tom Segura or Bert Kreischer are telling stories and getting laughs for material that only they could tell, because it actually happened to them and if someone tried to steal their material, it’s still going to be funny when you hear them tell it the way they wrote it. Louis C.K. was another guy like that and back when he was on the top of his game people would try stealing his stuff and he just didn’t care, he’d move on because be could just come up with more where that came from, but the thieves were stuck with whatever they had, or could get away with and eventually they got found out.
His Grandmother College money story is pretty good as well.
That was fun. I love Anthony Jeselnik and also knew his relatives. In fact, I have a great story about Anthony's cousin, Andy Jeselnik, who I met at my Book Club and saw walking down PA Rt. 255 in front of a Catholic Convent in St. Marys, Pennsylvania. The guy was wearing only black socks. No joke. He was naked.
This really happened.
So, I stopped my 1985 Dodge Omni, placed a beach towel on the passenger seat (I was the "pool manager" at my local Country Club so I always had towels in my car), and told Andy to "get in the car." He did.
I asked him, "what the hell are you doing?" And he said, to quote: "I'm going to the Circle D because I'm sick of it." The Circle D was a bar (gay bar? ... Maybe).
But, that's not the end of it. Within a minute the police stopped me and handcuffed both of us in front of the Catholic Convent. It was good thing that the locals in the neighborhood literally ran out of their houses to save me as I was flattened on the hood of a police car.

I think his jokes come from that saying "what's the worst that could happen?" He showed through his humor that abortion is a terrible experience, but you can still draw humor from even this 🙏

Death Metal Comedy
Anthony is a master of subtext in his delivery. He uses a repetition of words & phrases as a build-up to the hammering home of his jarring signature punchlines. The hardboiled tone to his voice is like a jaded cop or or been-there-done-that gangster who has no fuqs to give & takes absolutely no shit. In that dry, stone-cold, sociopathic patois he hides a significant amount of undercurrent emotional meaning. If you could not tell, within his satirical & likely fictional comedy bit, there was a high degree of distain & ridicule of the edgy subject of the jokes, as he savagely angles back & forth to cut often & deep both ways. The most obviously telling & of pregnant portent of these was the waiting room filled with the ghosts of children. There was biting social commentary in this bit.

As for your question at 19:00, I think he is referring to expect a much emotional experience, quick and intense, instead of as she is being called, first feeling anxious, then worried, then bored out of your ass looking at the pictures in the waiting room, and hearing the assistant/clerk, whatever, attending calls for an hour or two... then is the relief, the hug, the support, maybe a cuddling nap unless she wants to take a time alone but, girl, I 've been there...
