This is a wonderfully diverse collection of tunes that Ravi has assembled. He's cultivated his own voice not only as a perfomer but as well a composer as evidenced by three tunes in the set. The next time that I get up to New York, I'll make it a point to check him out.
I never knew there was a Ravi Coltrane! Fine show! its great he's keeping his dad's legacy alive. He would've been very proud! it's cool too how he looks just like his pops. :)
An amazing concert, I was there when this was recorded, and I was, almost literally, blown away. Perhaps my favorite was a very original and extremely energetic version of Charlie Parker's "Segment", where Ravi Coltrane plays the tiny sopranino saxophone and the other band members also do some great solos. I hope one of the live concerts of his new quartet will soon be on CD. (I have no idea why this video has only 237 views so far).
Great that you were there, but if you we almost literally blown away, was it the force of the air from Ravi's horn that almost blew you up the stairs and out onto the street, or the percussive power of the drums that almost blew you up? Just kidding, but "literally" has a meaning.
The comments range from so boring to awesome , so there are mixed opinions . Personally I think Ravi is a great young player with his own style not trying to imitate his famous father and I foresee many years of great music from him to come .
I was there one of the nights that week. You can't see him well in this clip but Jonathan Blake is a sight to behold. Incredible player but I don't how he does it. He sits the farthest up I have ever seen, and he is…very overweight….and I don't see how he does it.
Chris Massey Really, this comment is like saying how was Oscar Peterson able to sit upright and play piano as masterfully as he did without passing out `
yes this is a common oversite on TH-cam postings generally. just because we recognize them, not everyone has had the opportunity to listen. how can a person look up more music, make purchases and so on. should be a youtube requirement.
An honest comment. R Coltrane has never really arrived as an important voice. There is a lot of flailing around in his music. A sense of not going anywhere. His band with Luis Perdomo, EJ Strickland and Drew Gress did develop some good group interplay which i think is quite original.

He's a mature musician at age 53. His father was dead at 40.
This concert must have million views.
1st tune is just insane
I miss He Played Palm Stings
Wow! He looks just like his father.
Saw these guys on the Louis CK special at Madison Square Garden-pretty good stuff
He spent time with Steve Coleman and others, I think to find himself. Which is great. Kudos Mr. Ravi Coltrane...

Sweet! Ravi is on an Eb soprano. He's one of my all time favorite soprano players!!! The only cat that is "REALLY" allowed to play his "Pops" licks.

bedlam6666 I am confused as to how you don't see how he does it? What does his size have anything to do with his ability to get around the kit?

+Chris Massey being fat makes everything harder, not impossible though.
Jammin'

+Carlos Reboucas David Virelles
Dear WBGO: I really appreciate your making this available - but you should be ashamed of yourselves for not crediting all the musicians.

i don't think the bass and drums are hooking up that well on the second tune...
Coltrane's son is such a skilful saxophonist, yet I don't realize why his music is so boring... this concert is mostly a boredom
your face is a boredom
You don't understand!
Perhaps you are not a jazz listener. Are you stupid? Stop hating...
@@djghostmode And cause you are hating. Smh..
