People talk about surgeons being brilliant. Engineers being brilliant. Physicists and architects and activists. The poor Jazz artist, regardless of instrument(s), gets relatively little recognition. All members of this trio deserve and probably 'exceed' the label of 'brilliant'.
I don’t even play drums and I agree so much. I’ve never heard a drummer who can dominate the feel of a track so well, using such tasteful chops & grace notes never playing something expected or monotone. Hearing the trio dive in to mos def grooves is legitimately the peak of musical emotion right now.
I don't think Rob G gets enough credit on the keys...this man has mad skills. It's hard to out-shine Chris Dave in the trio but damn those melodies are RAW.
I agree he's a legend and the credit he gets should be even more. But frankly I see it a little differently. How many jazz cats really have ANY shine through the rest of the music being made? Very few. Robert Glasper is, thankfully, a name I can drop when I'm out and strike up a convo about music and people often know who I'm talking about. As it should be! Glass half full homie.
Not comparing his skills to the rest of the music made, just his skills on the keys. I could care less about the rest of the music honestly, but I appreciate your comment.
how many jazz cats have broke through like robert glasper is the question. he's what jazz needed to fuse the newer generation like myself and the older generations together. just my two cents.
Agree. Jazz was in a very stale place all through the 90's. And hwile I don't think we can hang it all on Glasper, he was a huge part of kicking off a whole new energy and direction for the last decade of jazz.
Superb, magnificent I have always loved the classic melodies-Little Bs Poem and Body and Soul-Glasper gives us an infusion of great melody and lyrics spanning decades. Fresh, soul piercing. Every member of this trio is extraordinarily polished and sophisticated, ; thank you for posting. The younger generation, bringing timeless and impeccable artistry for the ages. Robert Glasper takes you to another realm. The ancestors are proud! These talented musicians are God’s cosmic messengers!
I really enjoy listening to this trio. They are so inventive and energetic. I'm getting kind of old but I'm younger when I hear this trio. Glasper's gonna live forever!
Jazz is very much alive and well, my friend. Christian Scott, Kendrick Scott, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno, and Ari Hoenig - to name a scant few - are also keeping it that way.
People.... This is music... in the raw.. and at it's very best..... for those who state Bilal was not up to par... What exactly is "up to par" and what makes you an authority on the matter... ??.... Interpretations by observers of what is good or not good are subjective...and relative to that individuals point of reference which appears to be very limited.. ... For those of us who are real Music lovers... ..Robert Glasper, Bilal, Derrick Hodge and Chris Dave are the modern day Picasso's of Jazz...Just because they don't paint by the numbers... and within the lines doesn't make it any less great...Haters expand your mind..... Aight.??!!... That's all. :)
Unbearable beauty. Dudes, what are you doing to us? Your skills and level of understanding of each other is beyond explanation. This is pure art. Thank you for being. You make life meaningful with your music.
Just please... this is in the french festival in Paris "festival de la Villette"... i was there... i didn t take a plane to appreciate, i paid a ticket for my favorite festival in my town. Thank you to mention that.
This show really got me into jazz. Not the first jazz I’ve ever heard but these are the first jazz musicians I’ve ever really connected with and made me want to learn the art and the culture to walk the path myself.
Bilal and glasper's performance of the old standard "body and soul", is truly epic. Its really interesting how it seems to gets better and better to my ears, everytime i listen to it.
Oh wow. Robert Glasper trio, you guys have inspired me to be true in my life and music. I’m not a huge jazz head, but you guys are so refreshing, sublime, and wonderful. Thank god almighty for giving you guys the feeling of music. Thank you for your music. Much love.
When I watch Chris dave it's like all possible permutations of his limbs on the drums are already playing in time. He looks like he's just casually deciding, hmmm this one now. Phenomenal.
What a wicked collab, the most significant jazz pianist since Monk and Chris is the baddest drummer of this century! Imagine what he could do to a 20 piece double drum kit...?
The beauty and magic of Chris’s drumming is he doesn’t need a big set as every note he plays is about precision and feel of the groove, his minimal kit is all he needs in fact just give him a snare, bass drum and a hi hat and he will show you the power of GROOVE!!!

easily. the talent and passion that these musicians posess seriously brought me to tears multiple times throughout this video
Amen to that!
Dude, me too...I was thinking how wonderful it feels to be alive just to enjoy this moment!
The sound engineer (and mic choice/placement person) on this falls into that brilliance category, as well :-)
Thanks for saying what I have been saying to people for a long time. These artists are simply brilliant.....
Chris Dave is just sick. The detail, color and groove flow like a river.
I agree!
huh?
He so sick with them sticks..the whole crew dynamite 🧨

@Arthur Crouzet Yes. Yes it is.
Glasper even says it during the performance when he introduces him.
DERRICK HODGE .. THE UNSUNG HERO
I've never heard piano playing like this. It's like he's playing two pianos at the same time.
He often is….
Seeing Robert Glasper performing live without his beanie is probably the wildest thing in this.

G & B stands up with the entire modal jazz era.
The best live set I've seen for many years. Passion and momentum and brilliant musicianship.
thank you lord of youtube for bringing me here. my life will never be the same anymore, halleluia !!

It's truly mind blowing that Chris Dave is so comfortable while creating that explosion of rhythm

I love this guy, keeping jazz alive, I was worried for a minute
keeping it "alive"
reallly?
Jazz is very much alive and well, my friend. Christian Scott, Kendrick Scott, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno, and Ari Hoenig - to name a scant few - are also keeping it that way.
Vanguard got huge since I was last there.
Yeah, what jive.
😂😂😂
This is refreshing. It's coming from a younger generation. Jazz, at least in its home, America, has been given a reprieve!!!
Seeing this performance live changed my life
You can tell how amazing this ensemble is because they all make it look effortless. Pure focus.
Celebrating 11 years of his video claiming it's the Village Vanguard when it's Paris.
12 now. Just got here and automatically said to myself "The carpet on stage and size of the stage is wrong. Not the Vanguard." I hope all is well.

I am very proud this was performed in Paris France. Unforgettable. listen it in loop - near 2 hours...each time.
Fantastic video, thank you for sharing it with the world. I agree, Glasper has become this generation's best pianist in my opinion.
Beautiful Cats! Bilal is arguably one of the best jazz vocalists out there, even though he sings mostly R & B!
Duke'in it out, G, I wish I was there... This trio makes me relive my youth and hear it all over again.

Roy hargrove did it for me. RIP
1:05:30 holy shit. Chris Dave. Maximalist solo of just pure fire-eyed energy with that lovely autumnal refrain from Rob and Derrick. Monumental.
Bilal and glasper's performance of the old standard "body and soul", is truly epic. Its really interesting how it seems to gets better and better to my ears, everytime i listen to it.
Modern day magic.. Drawing from the past.. Stepping to the future with original manner. This here is the revolutionary shit. Ears be grateful!
The three have a dynamic that goes back years. Chris Dave redefines drumming, especially in a trio setting
JUST FANTASTIC
This was actually recorded at Cité de la Musique (Paris) during the Jazz à la Villette Festival
Thanks! I was confused AF as to why he was making French accent remarks at the Village Vanguard
Merci beaucoup, Anthony !
En effet, j’y étais. J’ai revu cette vidéo une vingtaine de fois. Formidable!
Nice to know sophisticated jazz is still around and being played brilliantly.
Little B's Poem is just flawless. Still watching this again and again every few months since it was posted in 2012. Amazing artists.

Pure magic, I watch this performance at least once a month. Its always amazing, inspiring.
Glasper is the embodiment of "tickle the ivories"--love his touch.
Fuu Derrick Hodge on body and soul is sooooo fire. Insane
From 1:17' until the end... the masterpiece. The first live jazz dj without a dj.
Chris Dave as always #1
2nd Best live ever 4 me ( after oscar peterson montreaux 77)..and it' s hard to say...but this combo between robert chris and derrick is epic.

Lyrics By - Doug Carn (1971 LP "Infant Eyes)
Written-By - Bobby Hutcherson (1965 LP" Components")
There is a another well-know version by Dee Dee Bridgewater on his 1974 LP Afro Blue
-----Little B's Poem------
Horns of love,
you make my heart sing the joys,
rejoys that all the bells ring
Little B, you are my heart’s delight
You make my life sunny and bright
Little B, you are all my heart sing for
Before you came and brought us such joy
How we hoped and prayed that you’d be a boy
But little girl you are my heart’s delight
You make my life sunny and bright
Little B, you are all my heart sing for
Little girl you realize you’re the one I idolize
You’re such a pretty baby
We’re so very glad you came our way
Horns of love,
you make my heart sing the joys,
rejoys that all the bells ring
Little B, you are my heart’s delight
You make my life sunny and bright
Little B, you are all my heart sing for
Gildas Royet
Thank you!
Geez, get a life
