  • Do customers ask you to put stripes in their lawn? I run my own gardening business and don't own a roller mower. I have been a self employed gardener for nearly 5 years now and not once have I been asked to put in stripes.

I’ve been in business for 6 years now and have put stripes on lawns from day 1. Only 2 clients have asked for it but always looks nice in the end.

Customers don’t ask for stripes but they want, like or appreciate them. It’s just another way of striving to do gardening better than they can do it themselves and being a professional

I once got told by a wise man, even the crappest lawns can be made half decent by striping them up 😉

The easiest way to make a four wheel lawnmower look like it stripes like a roller mower is to bolt a strip of thick rubber ( we used a cut down car mat ) to the mower just under the grass shute. The nap created looked like a perfectly striped lawn, which always looks a quality finish.

When I started I only had a hayter 48 with a rear roller but have since brought two 4 wheelers the Honda Izzy and etesia pro 46
I wanted the 4 wheelers for rough grass and wet grass etc they’ve both had more use in the last 8 months than my hayter
I think it’s nice to have both options mate
Some client’s ask for it some don’t
    Nice video Adam 😊

I'm in my first Full season, I have a rear roller mower. One of my very first customers specifically asked if I can put stripes in the lawn, I was really surprised.
That customer then turned out to be an absolute nightmare tbh, moaned about 1 single grass clipping that i left on the patio, didn't pay me for a week, moaned that the grass was still too long (because it was the first cut of the year and I didn't scalp it), wasn't happy about how loud my strimmer was, just a pain in the arse customer.
I do think that the photos I get of the lawns with the stripes in, helps me stand out from the competition in my area, that being said I dont think its a problem if you don't have a roller mower, 99.9% of people just want their grass cut and thats it.

It’s definitely not essential but the majority of people would say a striped lawn looks better than a non striped lawn.

  • @jackw9920

Depends on the lawn, some look better with stripes and some don't. A bumpy or arkward shaped lawn will look worse with stripes in my opinion.
I've never been asked for stripes either.

Never been asked in 13 years we currently have 80 lawns fortnightly and over the 13 years probably cut lawns for 120/30 customers and nobody has ever asked, rollers bring problems, used to use the 48pro hayter, issues with rollers lead us to use 4 wheel mowers, big advantage, cheaper, lighter and if the drive goes if you have to you can push till the end of the lawn to get done can’t do that with roller mowers, personal favourites Honda izy, Honda 536 mulcher, Honda 194 (battle tank) or Honda 537 hrs although drive issues can be expensive on those

What you’re doing looks just fine to me Adam. I get it if some rare customers have a super well-maintained lawn that’s been professionally scarified, tined, fed and treated…(& the money to pay for maintaining that!) No point otherwise. A lawn can still look great without stripes. And they blow away in the first wind anyway!

never been asked for stipes in 20 odd year mate 🤔 its a nice cosmetic affect but only lasts a couple of days anyway. the rubber flap on my izy lays down a faint stripe if the lawn is lush 👍

Have done since day one. 🤠. No need to try and reinvent the wheel just cut the grass do a good job 👍. That's all they want

Yes i do one lawn with stripes that i was asked to do it's a bit of a faff i carry two lawnmowers the smaller hyundai with the roller which is nice and light for smaller gardens also a weibang 50svp pro but this has a rubber flap on the back near the wheels so that gives you the look of stripes somewhat and its a beast on long wet grass with a high lift blade on

I simply don't have space to store too much equipment so I have to choose what I'll use most and what I can manage without. With that in mind my wheeled mower can do just about anything at any time just no stripes whereas I'm told roller mowers aren't ideal if the grass is too long/thick or if it's very wet. Easy decision for me.

  • @stevo1970

I always put stripes in my lawn. You need a well fertilized lawn with plenty of iron or magnesium in to get the lawn as green as possible if you want the stripes to pop. If they want stripes, use it to your advantage and charge for fertilizing and greening up their lawns!

  • @richh7872

I only have one customer that asked and he offered the use of his hayter mower if I didn't have a roller mower. My 4 wheel weibang has a rubber flap which does a decent half stripe too which is enough for the rest of my customers. If I hadn't been given my old honda rear roller I couldn't justify buying one for the lawns I do

If striping, stripes must all be the same width, so be sure not to overlap as it looks tacky otherwise.

I've been asked once to stripe a lawn once in my career, I personally think it's the gardeners that want to strike the lawns, not the customers... A rollower mow won't be going in my van any time soon! They are heavy to get in and out of the van and useless in the wet lawn there have a premium on their purchase price as well. A push mower with a sharp balde does just a good job.

When i was working as a jobing gardner, i never striped any lawns and was never asked.
Now running the gardens and grounds totalling 50 odd acres exclusively for one client including multiple high-end luxury holiday lets and a 18 bedroom rented mansion house, guess what still no stripes.
I do, however, cut weekly so the grass is always kept short and this is done 12 months of the year.
All my lawns get sprayed yearly with selective so no unsightly weeds flowering between or just after mowing.
To me weeds like dandelion plantain or daisies that can potentially flower a day or two after cutting are farr more unsightly and concerning than a lack of stripes.

A question to all gardeners here. When you arrive at a garden and a customer asks do you price by the hour. What is rhe first thing you reply with? (I am 1 year in) I have started replying I am trying to het away from the hourly rates as some jobs may be quick like digging up a couple of small shrubs for example.
If they ask for grass cut and a hedge cut and some border weeding?

    • @dukester147
      @dukester147 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I do sometimes judge it on whether or not they are a good regular customer too and possibly do by the hour. My downside is if you dig for 4 hours and you are cream crackered especially if it's clay soil, you haven't earned enough for day and might want to go home haha 😂

@@dukester147 I basically tell them I charge by the job and not per hour. We'll have a chat and see what they want doing. I'll decide a price I'm happy with then it's upto them whether or not they go with it. I'll never bring up the time I think it might take me. I shouldn't be punished for being quicker and investing in good gear that ALLOWS me to get a job done faster. If they go on and on about the time it will or should take me, they aren't the customer for me
