    Hi, love your channel! Quick question if you have a view… just starting out, I’ve priced a garden “recovery” type job, essentially brambles clearance followed by monthly maintenance. The initial clearance is around £2.5k which has been agreed by the client. Would you ask for an upfront on this? Maybe 30%? I don’t know the client, he doesn’t know me either really although I have been recommended by my first client. I just want to cover myself in case of payment issues. Have you any experience of this situation? Cheers! Simon

      @TheGreyGardener1990 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @supergrowler521 id be tempted on a job that size. I haven't priced anywhere near that for a job so it would worry me as there's clearly a lot of work there. I have on occasion asked for half up front and customer has been fine. So maybe 20/30% here would be reasonable I'd say

    we always try and aim to start a job at about 8am, on average we finish (hi season) about 4pm all depends on the day, I used to work 12 days on 2 days off, and sometimes till about 8pm, it was hard but now we try not to work weekends, my phone is only on between 7 and 5, so we even only take calls between work hours. too old now to work like a donkey. more to life than money

    Are you doing set time slots with people? I offer people 2hrs a fortnight regular maintenance at a set price but I find this restricts my earnings. How do you maximise earnings on limited time? I've got two kids who I have to pick up from school some days so I know how you feel about doing shorter and longer days depending on childcare responsibilities!

    • @TheGreyGardener1990
      @TheGreyGardener1990 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @jonclovercottagemarketgard1143 unless every garden is huge I'd say 2 hrs is really long. I do a lot of grass cuts only so in and out in 20 mins, half an hour. Cuts start at £20 so you can rattle of 2 or 3 in an hour. I have my customers in set days but not time slots

    • @jonclovercottagemarketgard1143
      @jonclovercottagemarketgard1143 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheGreyGardener1990 thanks for the info 👍. I only have a couple of grass cuts as most want regular maintenance and it seems common around here to offer 2hrs a fortnight (it seems their previous gardener did the same). I reckon I'll have to target more grass cuts next year to help increase my earnings!

    • @TheGreyGardener1990
      @TheGreyGardener1990 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @jonclovercottagemarketgard1143 yeah. As you say, if you're somewhere for 2 hours at a time I'd say that's fairly limiting as there's only so much you can charge. I never charge an hourly rate either, always by the job and that's a massive difference

    Ive got the newer hayter 56 pro and it too doesn't have a sump blug . So i think it said you could tip the mower on its side to get the oil out . Well as with my hayter i feel it really needs to be tipped on the dump . Mines turned out to be a sack of s!!t . Liking the stihls by far more Great vids chap

    I bought a 12v pump from Aldi. Its great. The same principle as this vid but no pumping necessary. Its a little dirty as oil drips from the inserted pipe and waste pipe. But it's OK for £12.

    Why say ' some idiots' when speaking about paying customers trying to get the best price? I think that's just normal and I expect it. So I'm cool about it and treat it matter-of-factly. If I think I can work for me, I will, if not, I won't. Of course you get the odd funny sod, but that's life. But I think a lot of this stuff is about the circumstances of your business and how you decide to build it. For example, I *never* have paying issues with customers cos of how I built my business on referrals and recommendations. And that also help you price and quote with confidence I tell a lie! I've had a couple of payment delays and chasings but that's because of venturing into a commercial business once or twice and then another time taking a gamble doing a one-off job for a massive national property management company to help out a friend who just started working for them. But in 19 odd years that's pretty good. I do business and property management work too for many years now but even they came out of referrals from family and friends of customers who worked for the companies. But I do fully understand the pricing dilemma, God knows I've been there many times and even now, 20 years nearly down the road, it can still be tricky. But I've kind of realised my value now and the quality, time spent on jobs. And how you compare with your fellow traders. If you have trusted relationships with clients, you'll learn so much about all kinds of things regarding your place and value in the market. I'm 64 nearly, started aged 44. I love the whole experience. The people, the work, the physicality and the learning curves. But good luck mate. You're clearly doing well

The neighbourhood app is amazing like you said as I get my enquires and jobs from there. I’ll keep watching and keep the good work up! Wish you all the success!

      Out of the past 14 videos which span just over 3 months, 12 have been about my gardening business. This video, I film what I do. I've just renovated my garden and had this video filmed edited and ready to go. We've just had a baby so things are hectic. I suppose you can't please everyone. @@TheGreyGardener1990 Wasn't a criticism. I'm sure many others are thinking the same as I am, which may reflect in engagement and views. I should have instead asked why the content varies so often and consistency. But who cares at the end of the day. I will still watch as will your subscribers. Written text comes across as ruder than what it would be if spoken to your face. PS - By business videos, I am referring to the "Running a Business" videos, i.e. guidance, experiences, customers, employing people, waste, accountancy, scheduling, advertisements, customer comparison between each social media, pricing strategies, etc. Not videos related to tool reviews and unboxing. You've got lots of experience and many, including myself, look to you for guidance. The allotment videos by the way are good. They would do really well as Shorts or TikTok. All the best mate

      Fair enough mate, good of you to explain. The thing is now after 3 years of being on youtube is having new ideas and not repeating myself. You also try new things as well to see what works and what doesn't. I know when I do a lot of my business videos they have the initial spike when the video is released but then it just dies off which can seem like a waste of time to me.. So the key is having a video that can be searchable and have that longevity to keep ticking over with views. So some videos I put out, which may be a story or a snipet of info which I know will be uself, I also know the video will die but in order to keep up with 1 video per week I have to do it. It's a tricky one. Ironically, the bendy carrot video, I get a healthy amount of views from Google on that one, so that's a success for me. But then it's also really difficult at the moment as I have so much going on. I hope we have ironed that one out mate and as ever I appreciate everyone who watches!
