      According to the game Avatar Generations, the Before/After Genocide dating system is used in at least some contexts. Though that might be a result of some writer desperately needing a calendar and picking the least bad option.
      Most Avatar media doesn't mention calendars or anything, but there are passing references to a few systems; Wan Shi Tong's eras (no one knows how they work), a traditional calendar counting the number of days in the current Avatar's life (no one wants to use it because it's impractical), and possibly the Chinese zodiac (listed on the wiki with no citations explaining its relevance).

      @@MichaelonyoutubI would guess that they were a bit like Tibet - temples acting as strongholds for semi-feudal monks, ruling over a serf-like peasants in nearby villages and small port towns. Afterall, the air nomads will need food and limited international trade at least, in order to acquire resources which aren't found locally. They will also need harbours to fascilitate travel to other temples and islands.
      Also, where do the children of air nomads go who aren't air-benders go? Are they just sent off into exile? Sorry little baby, you weren't born right. So we're just going to leave you on a rock to die. That really doesn't seem the air-nomad way. More likely there were local communities of people related and connected to the temples, but weren't actual air-benders.

    As a kid I thought it was insanely stupid for Ozai to burn down the Earth Kingdom using Sozin's Comet. Because even if the Fire Nation had to face rebellions, it won't do them any good to turn the land they've been conquering for 100 years into ash and smoke, while also wiping out most of their tax paying subjects living there. But seeing how more than half of the Earth Kingdom was still out of their grasp. It now makes total sense that he would go down the total annihilation route and choose to eliminate the part of the Earth Kingdom that was still not under his control.

    • @BetaDude40
      @BetaDude40 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      I mean the other reason is just that he couldn't care less about taxes and subjects, he just wants irrefutable clout and supremacy, no matter who dies in the process. The Fire Lords long stopped caring about the explicit prosperity of their kingdoms after Sozun's death, as the tactics of the fire nation gradually shifted from occupation to assimilation to full-on annihilation in the earth kingdom

    • @wellingtonsh1
      @wellingtonsh1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      It seems to me that Azulon still maintained Sozin's strategies. Ozai who changed the ideology of leading the Fire Nation's civilization through occupation and assimilation (a strategy that Azula would still use incorporating the Dai Li into the Fire Nation), to simply subjugation at any cost to the point of having an admiral willing to kill the Moon.

    • @BetaDude40
      @BetaDude40 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@wellingtonsh1 Not sure if it's fair to blame the last one on Ozai though, it's unclear. At best Ozai seems rather ambivalent towards spirits; he's certainly willing to genocide multiple entire cultures and a race of spiritual dragons to get his way, but we don't know if his blatant disrespect of life extends to the Spirit World or if he's more worried about projecting power and might have some idea that invading the spirits would open yet another front to his war.
      Most likely, Zhao needed a secret move to debilitate the water benders, and Zhao being a raving narcissist was willing to literally destroy one of the two most important celestial bodies on earth to get an advantage and solidify his legacy.
      While the Fire Nation does often have war room meetings that involves Ozai directly, and they do have their own network of Messenger Hawks which seems pretty unique to the Fire Nation, all of the generals and admirals would have to operate on some level of autonomy from Ozai's oversight. Zhao seems to keep the entire Spirit Oasis thing a secret even from Iroh up until just before he executes his plan, so I doubt Ozai knew about the Spirit Oasis or ordered Zhao to kill them.
      Though let's be real if he _did_ know about it, and heard that destroying the moon would destroy all waterbenders forever, he would definitely be all for that in a heartbeat.

      Honestly an army of earth benders is waaay more terrifying to deal than an army of firebenders, the fire nation did all the damage they did because of Sozin comet for the first strike and their highly advanced tech, ships and weapons, and the fact the Dai Li screwed big time by alienating the Earth King and the entirety of the capital city basically leaving every province fighting by itself
      Realistically speaking, earth bend is way overpowered in war periods, creating entire landscapes, walls, fortifications while every individual of your army being an walking trebuchet is just OP, the fact is Azula pretty much defeated the Earth Kingdom when she took control of the Dai Li, just because the earthbend they had
      Kuvira had an army of earth benders herself, the support of the people, and the fact the entirety of the earth kingdom was basically dismantled and not united at all, also she IS from there, she knows every hint and trick necessary, being from terrain knowledge or millitery info, to defeat and subdue every other province

    More info
    Camilla-Peony war, essentially a royal succession crisis in the fire nation from the crowning of Zoryu to the 290s BG.
    Yellow neck rebellion - the entire rebellion was held by some cultist who wanted to make a nation that only existed in his mind or on paper. Members of the revolt grew erratic, going on killing sprees before the revolt would be crushed.
    War of Chin the Conqueror - Chin was a governor presumably in the Northwest, during his governorship, the 46th king, who was corrupt, ascended to the throne, the 46th emperor's incompetence, failures, and corruption led to him starting an uprising presumably with popular support. Despite the military estimates being unknown, it can be infered that either Chin had a large army from the start or Earth Kingdom troops defected. The rebellion collapsed after Chin's confrontation with Kyoshi.
    Era of peace - the Pax Britannica of this world, lasted a century and was started by Kyoshi.
    Water Tribe - Earth Kingdom naval standoff - caused by a dispute over naval boundaries, lasted from 14 BG to the beginning of the Airbender Genocide.
    The Hundred-year war - A war that lasted exactly 100 years that encompassed the globe. The war was marked by the Fire Nation invading a large part of the world and subduing certain areas, EX: Southern Water Tribe. The war ended in an allied coalition victory after the battle at wulong forest.
    Dai Li Coup - Earth King Kuei had arrested City Secretariat, Long Feng, and shortly after, the "Kyoshi Warriors" (in truth, Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee) would arrive and, after finding out about the arrest of Long Feng, decided to make a deal with him and became essentially the leadership of the Dai Li in all but name, Azula would forge a plan that would be orchestrated as a 1-by-1 takeout mission that goes from the council of 5 to the Earth King himself. Azula crowned herself as Queen of the Earth Kingdom and the Dai Li would tear down part of the wall shortly after, letting the Fire Nation in. The fate of the rest of the lands that the Earth Kingdom controlled before the Dai Li coup is unknown, but one of the Dai Li Officers in one episode mentioned "The Council of 5 and the Military remain loyal to the Earth King" so it can be assumed that Azula only ruled in Ba Sing Se and had to deal with a civil war after the coup.
    Collapse of the Earth Kingdom - occurred after the death of the queen to anarchists. The entire nation quickly collapsed into either full anarchy or warlords, being united by an Interim Government which would turn into a Nazi-Like Dictatorship.

      I think they moved between the temples a lot, by air.

      They frequently traveled around the world and moved between temples. Men lived in the southern and northern temples, females in the eastern and western, and kids growing up seemed to have to visit all of these places as part of their airbender training and culture.

      The nomads do not seem like a civilization or nation like the others but rather like just a priestly caste since the air nomads seem to be formed exclusively by benders, while the benders were a very small portion (an elite) of the other peoples.

    The issue with the map is that it is not accurate. We know from ATLA Season 3 I think in Zuko's reading of scrolls from the life of Sozin that Avatar Roku confronted Sozin over territorial gains made in the Earth kingdom a couple of decades prior to Roku's death. These were given back I believe. Granted we don't have any information on where but one could wager the Hu Xin colonies would be the likely candidates.

      @EmperorTigerstar  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      From what I could find, the colony was not given back. Sozin was ordered to stop further colonizing. Nothing I found indicated the land was returned, and lore implied Yu Dao was a continuous colony throughout.

    Wasn't the Southern Watertribe basically occupied? I mean all water benders were kidnapped, and Zuko sailed there with impunity. Also, the Air nomads were completely wiped out, assuming that all Air Temples were conquered?

    • @Kendix-tylko-tyle
      @Kendix-tylko-tyle 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The Fire Nation was more focused on managing the Earth Kingdom. He sent troops to the Southern Water Tribe just to kill/capture the waterbenders. Zuko could have just sailed into Wolf Cove because the Water Tribe was already too depleted to put up any meaningful resistance.

      Not occupied, occupied means they had a permanent base there, they were just devastated

    Looking at the map you have to be amazed at how the Fire nation wiped out every air bender given how easy it should have been for them to escape.

      During a talk Aang is having with Zuko about learning fire bending, Aang mentions that there were dragons around before he got frozen. Soooo yeah.

      @@Kobekola That was before Sozin had them all hunted down. It was a big mistake on his end since he didn't have aerial units to combat the Airbenders at the time.
