I'm a full blooded Navajo and this song hits me so hard because it reminds me of my people and the legacy of my people that i have to carry. I will not let my people down. That's my mission, forever.

I am not Navajo, but I grew up all my life in Tuba City, AZ, since I was 6 months, until high school graduation and a little beyond. My parents have taught there for over 45 years. I heard this song multiple times, and it hits home, too. I remember it clearly. You will make your people proud. You are from a powerful people. Always remember who you are. I can tell in your passion in your message. Always remember how beautiful it is to be a Dine.

My 5th grade teacher taught us this song. At the time, it was just a song about a father and son, but now, after 12 years and growing up, it makes me tear up. It's a father telling his son that he can be the one who brings the change and makes the world better for himself and his people. Like a duty, a handing of the torch, from elder to young. I still think about it every now and then, powerful message. Thank you Ms. Torres.

We used to do this in elementary, our teacher was white, but he also was half native, got an education and came home to teach us. He would tell me stories and hand language. He will be missed, many teachers have passed away that were always there teaching. Making sure we understood every word. I miss them aho......

Born in New Mexico, I've Native American blood in my veins. In sixth grade, I heard this song in music class and I had no idea what it meant until now. Climb the ladder means: Succeed well in life, your family and friends will be proud of you. It took me years to figure that out. So climb the ladder, earn your feather, and make your people proud of you.

Man.. as a Tongan, this speaks to me. We used to sing it in Elementary school but now as a grown man, having a better knowledge of my ancestors and where they come from, this brings a great sense of honor, pride and responsibility upon me and I gladly carry it. My ancestors will be proud of me. God bless and thanks for sharing!!!

My father was Cherokee, but I am adopted, and was born without Indian blood, so I can never be accepted as a Cherokee.
Never the less, I don't know why, but when I first heard this song, I was moved to tears of pride, hope, and joy.
As a student at Brigham Young University, I learned the song, and now you can see my own amateur version on YOU TUBE, which admittedly, doesn't begin to compare with this.
