    The Avus banking was paved with bricks which made it super slippery. There are numerous pictures of cars going over the top. Even wilder is their hosting motorcycle races in the '30s!

      Basically everything that didn't involve cars directly racing each other on a closed circuit was okay. Should've maybe researched better :D

    When I was in Berlin, I drove along the section of motorway that they used as part of the AVUS circuit. The grandstands near the former banking are still there today. Also, if you look on Google Earth you can actually see the other banked corner from the longer layout and it's all overgrown now.

    they need banking tracks again. Tracks these days are so flat. Look at Sochi, Hockenheim, Mexico, Yas Marina also without the sector one hill. Maybe some deep off-camber corners.

    Fair Park (Dallas), held the Dallas Grand Prix in 1985. It was dropped off the calendar after a year after, for instance, Nigel Mansell's engine went just shy of the finish, and he collapsed as he pushed his car across the line.

    Avus was basically shut down as the biggest part of it is the official southbound Autobahn A 115. The traffic congestion it caused when the Autobahn was shut down for a racing weekend just became too much. It was interesting leaving Berlin southbound and driving past the stands, knowing you were on the Avus race track. It's sad it's gone as an official race track, but it was unsustainable (though on German Autobahnen you can drive 130 km/h or faster, so strictly speaking, lots of race tracks everywhere). The stands are still there and will be renovated as they are a listed building.
    Trivia fact: AVUS is the abbreviation of "Automobil-Verkehrs- und Uebungs-Straße" (automobile traffic and training street)

  • @Sponge1310
    @Sponge1310 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really like your videos and this series in particular :) I know it’s a bit nitpicking, but I found your research on the tracks in this episode a bit lacking, when you compared the AVUS banking with the Monza banking, you call it “like half that” while it was 30 degrees (average). Also it was only 1 banked corner, and the track was shortened 4 times from 12 miles to eventually 1.6 miles at the end of it’s use. Also the Caesars Palace grand prix track was temporary on the hotels parking lot and had only 4 years of use, of which only 2 F1 races on the ‘full’ layout and CART used it for the other 2 years on a layout that connected turns 1, 6 and 10 to create a 1.125 mile sort of oval shaped track. This is just what I found in less than 5 minutes on Wikipedia. And maybe a tip for future episodes, when you list stats, tell it in a way that doesn’t come across as if you’re guessing or unsure, I assume you did research so you should know, write them down it that blue notebook you’re holding but don’t seem to be using...? I don’t want to come across as trying to hate on you or anything just some feedback :)

      @JerseyDevilBM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zandvoort is still an actively used circuit; for instance, the DTM has a race there next month (July 2018). Like someone posted above, it should be included in a "lost tracks" series, not this "abandoned tracks" series. But it does deserve to be covered, regardless with its extensive history.

      @@RadityaPramanaPutra2001 Actually, they did race just outside of Los Angeles, sort of. The non-championship 1971 Questor Grand Prix was held at Ontario Motor Speedway, in Ontario, California. The "sort of" part is because it was a mix of Formula One and Formula 5000 cars, and it was held in two 32-lap heats because of the limitations of the Formula 5000 cars' fuel tanks.

      Excellent suggestion, German! Although it only hosted one championship Formula One race, unlike some of the other tracks in this series, it has a substantial historical legacy, hosting USAC/CART (IndyCar), sports cars/Can-Am, NASCAR, Trans-Am and IMSA races, many with full international standing. Many of the greatest drivers in the world drove on it, including Jim Clark, Dan Gurney, Jack Brabham (and sons), Mario Andretti, John Surtees, Bruce McLaren, Graham Hill, Denny Hulme, et al.

      It's an event where the rich and famous get to party and be seen. It serves no real purpose in terms of F1 for all the reasons you all have posted except publicity ("See all the glamorous venues Formula One visits [show stock footage of yachts in the harbor]!"), but it will continue IF the new owners of F1, Liberty Media, can convince the organizers that they will have to give up their previously FREE (yes, I said no-charge) hosting of a championship F1 race and share the fees that every other grand prix promoter pays. They might have to convince some backers to dig into the trillions of dollars (yes, "tr" + "illions") that are estimated to be stored in Monaco's banks untaxed to finally pay their share.

Boavista was notable for the tram tracks cars raced over!

      As someone has noted above, Long Beach isn't an "abandoned" F1 track but should be covered in a "lost" F1 track series. It's alive and well for IMSA and IndyCars and doing just fine. It's an example of a track that refused to pay Bernie's exorbitant fees for hosting an F1 race and yet prospered, hosting major races 44 years in a row. The first race in 1975 was a Formula 5000 event (won by the great Brian Redman) and then the next eight years the Formula One U.S. Grand Prix West was staged there (won by such luminaries as Mario Andretti, Gilles Villeneuve, Nelson Piquet, Alan Jones and Niki Lauda) and then 1984 through the present has hosted CART/Champ Car/IndyCar.
