    📽 📽 IN THIS WEEK'S VIDEO: Remus Repeal Reserve V (100 proof, $80-100) vs Lucky Seven 12 Year The Hold Up (100 proof, $100)
    We put this matchup into our head-to-head pool because they're both high age statement bourbons and because Remus Repeal Reserve gets a lot of accolades but can be difficult to find (in some markets, ours included). We wanted to see if it stood out as being anything special and if Lucky Seven's 12 Year The Hold Up was a comparable alternative in a blind tasting.

    I have RRR VI. I was thinking about getting lucky seven the hold up for $120. Now im debating and may stick with getting the frenchman. I just got holiday toast and its really good.

    I feel like there's so many places you can get MGP at less than $90.
    Plus, you can get regular Remus store pick and Knob Creek store picks for about $55.
    Repeal just seems too much of a premium on the price

      Batches IV and V not withstanding, we can get behind this take. IV and V did have some special sauce though and were great at suggested retail.

    Did not get to try Remus V. Remus VI is sitting on shelves everywhere. Not sure I would even pay $75 for it. I have several of the Lucky Seven offerings and like them all…Proprietors 15, The Frenchman, The Jokester, and Holiday Toast.

    My wife doesn’t remember what I say either. Also I dug the vanilla is strong in this one. I was not groaning. Remus V is unobtainable. Oh well.

    Would you mind sharing how you keep everything blind? I would like to start doing it as well, but struggling how to wrap my head around you guys do it. How you keep it documented on your phone and all please if you don't mind. Thanks for the videos, you two are awesome.

      Sure thing. It’s a pretty easy system. Tons of 2 oz sample jars make it difficult to track or even remember what’s in the pool, and the sample jars have a label on the bottom with a number that coincides with the online key. For the key, we use a simple Google Forms page with a bunch of drop downs. The keyed numbers and corresponding prices are visible, and we have to click the drop down to see what the pour is.

    Anything over 60 to $70 is pretty much diminishing returns because they are so many good bourbons you can get in that price range and below. Spending $100 on a bourbon would have to be something special for me. I'm not cheap I'm just been thrift and smart with my money 💥

    Great head to head! I had a friend in Manitoba send me a sample of Remus Repeal VI and I immediately asked him to grab me a bottle (which he graciously did) funny that Manitoba is the only province in Canada where you can get this bottle. So next time I pop over for a visit I have a really nice bottle waiting for me!! I'd still love to find any Lucky 7 product up here, the closest I have seen in from a place in New York which sells the 15yr The Proprietor for $400.00 USD and that's just outside of my reach for a bottle,...waaay outside!! Hopefully a distributor will pick them up for resale in Canada and I can find one at Canadian MSRP. You two take care, I'm looking forward to the next livestream!! - Dave.

    Remus 5 came across young? Cant say ive ever felt that way in my blinds. One of my all time favorite whiskeys

    • @stuffandwhiskey
      @stuffandwhiskey  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's funny how things can come across when you're double blind. Our only guess is that it hadn't had enough time to open up in the glass and we were getting an ethanol edge to it, hence the young comment. That went away as we got acclimated to it and/or as it opened up.

      We hear ya. Analytics showed that 90% of people skipped it though, and it added a tremendous amount of time to our editing process. At the end of the day whether or not we’d actually buy something before the reveal is really the most telling piece of info in our reviews. Cheers and thanks for watching Otis. 🥃

      Definitely go for the barrel proof over the 100 proof offerings if you ever get the chance on Lucky Seven. It's worth it.

    RRR5 should beat L7 12yr hold up! I’d pick L7 all day long as it’s in our market on the shelf. Would be good to stick RRR5 up against another allocated heavy hitter for a fair compare.

  • @ranman1959
    @ranman1959 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought every bottle of RRRV I could find when it was around; it's by far the best bottle in that price range I've ever had. I've had a sample of the L7 and it was also very good but by the time I looked for it it was almost double the price of RRRV. RRRVI seemed like a bit of a letdown; it was good and definitely more fruity, but I didn't like it as much as RRRV which was $20 less in my market. C16 vs RRRV would be a tough call for me; I love them both but C16 was $150 vs $90 for RRRV. I still bought a couple C16s though. I was surprised when both of you thought RRRV tasted young on your first sip.

    So interestingly the Remus 6 has been sitting on shelves around me for many months. I pass it up every time I go to the few local stores I frequent. Probably because it has younger whiskey in it than 5 and is priced at $125 around here. So no one buys it knowing its probably not worth that much. I never saw a 5 around here before when it was out though.
