    I switched over to an oval 32t and it was awkward at first but once I changed the way I peddled in the climbs it felt more effective. It was good to hear how it worked for others…

      It's definitely interesting on how others feel about a oval. Glad it worked for you too!!!!

    Great explanation, sounds like we ride similar terrain. This may be my next thing to try seeing climbing isn't really my strongest point. My last comment wasn't a "stir the pot" type of insinuation just my attempt at humor. Really enjoyed this video thx for sharing 👊

      I know you were joking HAHAHAHA But, it is a fair point as well. It is crazy how some get super worked up over stuff like this. 😅😅😅 If you do try one let me know what you think!!!!

    Been using an oval on my mtb and hybrid for a few years. 32T Snail on mtb and 34T Dekkas on the hybrid. These are the budget end of the market but I'm convinced they are better on my knackered knee.

    • @chickensendies
      @chickensendies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely feel like they are easier on the knee as well! (Had a tibia plateau fracture 😅😅😅) I have enjoyed mine very much so glad you are too!

    Cool man, I do have a couple of ovals.
    I had 1 on my blackcomb, I just now placed it on my son's scout. And I have anotherone I'm thinking in putting on my gravel project. I'm thinking in getting a gxp oval for my poly and the axums as well when time comes to replace

      Appreciate it, Alex! I personally really find that they help me on the trails. Hopefully more will try them and not just see them as a "fad" and form their own real world opinion. 😁😁😁

    Played with several combinations between round and oval of different tooth counts. Also swapped back and forth several times to be really sure of my findings. Always go back to the oval and liking it better. I feel my pedal stroke is more fluid and especially on climbs. I am a big rider with really bad knees and I find they always feel better running oval! Currently on a wolftooth have run AB my suggestion would be stick with those brands. Not to say others are bad I just feel after running some of the other brands AB and wolftooth have it figured out the best!

      I definitely think you should give it a go!!!! Especially because you ride very similar terrain and trails!

  • @michaelsprinzeles4022

    I've never tried an oval but what you described seems counter intuitive. I'd think the oval should be smaller on the downstroke, while climbing, to increase torque & lessen pedal effort (like changing to a smaller gear up front). I can imagine it lends itself to hill climbing off road but not to a smooth cadence for any other type of riding.
    That said, when climbing started to get difficult for me I just added an electric mid-drive (before you judge, I was near 50 and had been riding regularly since childhood before going electric). I don't think mid-drives would be happy with an oval;)

    • @chickensendies
      @chickensendies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would never judge!!! Not my place 😁😁😁 But, I understand where you come from on that aspect! It's definitely a very interesting piece of gear for a bike!

    • @michaelsprinzeles4022
      @michaelsprinzeles4022 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chickensendies I wasn't so much talking to you about "judging". A few years ago I might have joined in calling motors cheating. Who knows, maybe an oval would have given me a few more years before going electric. I may try one on my Dolomite ALX which doesn't have a motor (yet).

    • @chickensendies
      @chickensendies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Michael Sprinzeles I know what you meant 😁😁😁 I think Ebikes absolutely have a place personally. I'd love for my Father to get one and go on rides with me! It would be an absolute blast to be able to ride with him but he would not be able to on a normal bike sadly. Maybe someday he will be able to! If you slap an oval on the ALX let me know what you think!

    • @michaelsprinzeles4022
      @michaelsprinzeles4022 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chickensendies You know I will let you know if I go oval. I let you know when your videos influenced me to get the ALX in the first place.
      You have the skills & the tools (minus 1 installation tool) to slap a bafang mid-drive on the bike of dad's liking. I'd go easy on the "sendies" with dad;)

    I felt a difference going from a 32T round to oval chainring. Been using it ever since. Changed the ring over to my high pivot bike. Since the chain comes from above and not from behind, the oval needs to be set differently, else it will hinder (longest lever when Feet are at 12 and 6 instead of around 9 and 3 o'clock). And that you could feel really well! On the gravelbike I still ride a round one and for some reason it does not feel different then the oval. 🤣

    • @chickensendies
      @chickensendies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely interesting on the high pivot! I never would have thought of that!

  • @RomansDowntime
    @RomansDowntime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have only tried an oval ring once. I think it was a good experience, but didn’t think there was a significant difference. However any little bit of gain that helps the riders stamina is a plus in my book

    • @chickensendies
      @chickensendies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @chrishorbatt3504

    The one day i rode a oval the only difference i noted was on the down stroke i broke traction easier where ther was minimal traction to begin with. Otherwise, i forgot it was even on there!

    • @chickensendies
      @chickensendies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You probably were breaking traction because you technically had more force on the oval! Also, you might just have Hulk legs! 😁😁😁😅🤣🤣🤣

      @@chickensendies Well uh still not a project for this year but I would put a cheap Chinese alloy crank with sram mounts, put a purple sram chainring ( round, cause even if I know the theory behind the oval, I think round cleaner on appearance comparison ) mounted on a purple meroca bottom bracket. And am... while I ´m there... I still don’t know if I want to convert it single speed/ dirt jumper eventually, but only if I can finally order my full squish. Yeah had a little problem of sizing. See it’s a yt capra pro race 27 mk II 2019 in petrol/ grey color - lots of specifications here- and it’s only available in reselling at the pros closet but on xl size, so gotta be patient. Frigging bike industry! 😤😂

    I remember the oval 3x set ups that were on alot of the mountain bikes in the late 90s to early 00s and how horrible they were, they just never felt right. I'm not opposed to an oval but I am a bit skeptical. Maybe they're awesome, maybe they're just hype.
