Not What I expected - Galax RTX 4070 EX Gamer Tested
Nvidia’s new graphics cards are absolutely insane. In fact one of them can be around a 100% improvement which may be the largest ever seen in a single generation. The question is should you buy these new RTX GPUs, or are you better off buying second hand cards.

Which GPU are you most interested in? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
would work as good laptop gpu.
I do not think people buying 4070+ are worried about few extra dollars on power bill at least not the vast majority
You think that people just laugh about efficiency? Like, I have a 3080, 2 x 3070s and rx 6700xt, every system is tuned to be as efficient as possible. You don't gain wealth by just wasting money for no reason. People with money try to minimize unnecessary expenses.
But as I say this, I think about all the giant trucks and suvs on the road and.... maybe I'm totally wrong. (But I think it's two different types of people who would buy a high end gpu vs high end truck.)
@@slackin35 yes i think most people do laugh about it when it comes to gpus they just buy whatever has the highest fps ( in fact they buy a prebuild pc and dont really know much of anything about it) and they leave it all on default settings and forget about it... you or me are in a very small minority.. also your analogy for saving to be wealthy well why dont you go and see how much it actually costs to run a gpu per month on average and compare that to how much in diesel it costs to run a truck in your example.
@@slackin35In Europe it makes sense, because energy is very expensive and salaries are lower, but in the US.. it just doesn't really matter aside from preventing coil-whine or heat.
@Sidjulius88 who has a diesel truck? What are you talking about? You know people who buy a high end gpu are probably more likely to be driving an EV or hybrid....
@MarcosKBK interesting take on that.... euro market is certainly different than US market, but your statement is very broad and not implicitly true. Some places in USA are incredibly high cost on energy, and some are very inexpensive. While we may be 1 country, there's as much difference between states as there is difference in countries in Europe. American South is insanely cheap but also terrible terrible salaries, far lower than most euro countries. Meanwhile, go to New England or west coast and you find high costs, and high salaries.
its amazing the efficiency you get when you slap a 4070 badge on what should of been a 4060
I remember laughing about the 10GB of VRAM because Far Cry 6's HD texture pack required 11GB. It was one of the MANY reasons that I chose the RX 6800 XT.
Lol and I m laughing at this comment
Air conditioner running up my electric bill . Video card is the least of my worries LoL.
Just buy inverter ac
40 series could have been the best generational upgrade if nvidia didn't price it like the mining boom was still around or had not held back it's cards to make the 4090 look like the best price to performance on the line up
Just got this card today, with the promo code. Great video, thanks, will play around with the undervolting it!
Thnx for your efficiency testing. Didnt know that these 4070 had so much potential lowering the power draw that much. This is 1070 territory. Even better than 4060ti by 25% more performance at that power level. Best sweet spot.
My only gaming space is my upstairs bedroom and I definitely appreciate lower power parts. Ada is a banger for sure
So does this card have true rainbow aRGB? And can it be connected and synced with mobo aRGB?
Are they the specs for the 4070 running 4k at 150 watts ?, you didn't show the resolution when showing the specs. Cheers
Can you please tell me what cable extenders those are 😫😫
how did you undervolt it? i mean are there any UV presets in the software or did you do it by yourself?
Using MSI Afterburner
I did about the same to mine, even got it for 100 euro less than msrp. I'm happy with it and i rly do like that i get, dlss 3 and frame gen on single player games, amd needs to get up to par with this quick, well and nvidia needs to put more vram on their gpu's lol
And quit reducing the transfer rate as well.
Hello, can you please share a video on how to Undervolt this card.
I bought one on prime day. I got sick and was hospitalized and have not installed it yet. I will now but it was for the AV1 encoder. My 3070 was over kill for the games I play. However, I think that AV1 standard will be something not only for smaller files but shorting time uploading to TH-cam.
Will i have bottleneck issues pairing this with a i5 11600k?
I dont care about my power bill. Its hot down here in the South. AC runs 24hrs out of day to cool my top and bottom floor house.
Its the normal or one click oc ?
Tbf, 4070 was not as bad as people say it out to be. It was put at a wrong price, that's all there is to it.
No it is that bad and the wrong price. Every card apart from the 4090 should actually be a class lower with how few cuda cores they have compared to the 4090 so the 4080 should of been the 4070ti the 4070ti should of been the 4070 ect. That's Also why the cards look so efficient.
@@thatbritishgamer i mean everyone has an opinion of their own. For me, the 4070 works for my personal use(I need a NVIDIA card) because I was looking for a card that fit my case, don't draw a lot of power and perform somewhat close to the performance of a 3080; I considered some ideas as well like "Why not a 4070 ti?" im not paying 800 dollars for 12 GB of VRAM. You could have ask "why not the 6800xt/6900xt/6950xt?"? Well, these AMD cards are better yes, but the cheapest card at the time don't fit my case and it drew too much power. Another question I considered as well is that "why not a used 3080? Cheaper price yes, but will there be warranty for those cards, maybe not; and it drew 310 W of power which like I said, im not comfortable with. Pro for me: it is a more efficient 3080, it fits my case, it is great for 1440p(which is the resolution I played on), fit my ussage; Con for me: the price, perform worse than the 6900xt/6950xt(but these AMD cards don't fit my case). If we're not taking the price into consideration(meaning if it is cheaper like 450-500), it is a good(good not great) card!
Also I like the 40 series bc they run cooler temps.. my 3080ti would run at 75c but my 4090 runs the sane game at like 48c
Same, the temps on my 4090 have been great, usually 45c-55c, up to 60c-65c when really stressed
4090 is such an amazing card!
4080 is very efficient with power too. Maybe more than the 4070
Max TDP is 330 or 340 I think and its pretty cool if its no OC.
Actually, often times the highest tier models deliver the best FPS to Watts Ratio.
edit: when undervolting (!)
Yes, 4080 is actually the most efficient Ada GPU, according to DF measurements. The second place belongs to 4070 Ti, which is a bit more efficient than 4070.
While the most power efficient Ampere GPU was 3070. Which means that 4080 is a real 4070, as 70' class cards usually had the best power draw/performance ratio.
@@stangamer1151 True, however, if you undervolt the 4090 so that it has the 4080's power, the 4090 is more efficient.
@@bjornna7767 4080 and 4070s can be undervolted as well. And the results are pretty impressive too. For example, 4070 Ti power draw can be reduced down to ~190W (at peak) w/o any significant pefrormance loss. And overclocked VRAM can increase it's performance by 5-10%.
I love my 4070, upgraded from a 3070.
I do not understand why 4070 Ti costs this much. As well as why does 4060 has a 16GB version now, but 4070 Ti is stuck with 12
Because of Bus Bandwidth.
This is not the 4070 Ti. I wish he would do a comparison between the 4070 and the 4070 Ti.
I like the way you have been presenting yourself lately. Keep it up buddy!
What do you expect going from Samsung 8 nm to TSMC 4 nm?
Absolutely accurate. I have an RTX 4080 laptop. It's the same chip as the desktop 4070 but with more cuda cores enabled. It runs at 150W and matches the performance of a full power desktop 4070 card. The efficiency is amazing
Seems odd to me they can fit a 4090 into a laptop yet the desktop card's the size of a paving brick.
Good info as was thinking about a 4080 lappy myself.
@@destrozar i got the Aorus 17H for $1990. But now I see the MSI GP68HX for $1920
@@tomjones4318 the 4090 mobile is more similar to the 4080, but with worse memory and much lower clock speeds. it is in no way comparable to the desktop 4090
This is pretty cool, literally! I don’t have AC and having a card that gives me perf without dumping a heat into my room would be a Godsend! Can you test temps before and after the undervolt?
How can you afford a $600 graphics card but not a ducking AC? Are you living in the 1800s or something?
@@four11 kinda yeah, so I rent a home that was built in 1960, there isn’t even a furnace/ducts. We use a portable AC in a few rooms but there aren’t any windows in my office soooooo… I dunno, you want me to stop using my PC?!?
@@Doug-mu2ev I live in a building from before WW2, everyone here has an AC. I also find it kind of funny how you're willing to spend $600 on a graphics card just because it is going to be slightly more efficient yet you use an infamously inefficient portable AC that chugs even more money. Surely your landlord wouldn't be against installing a central unit if the heat was a problem? And if not, you picked a real bad apartment.
@@four11 I live in a house, not an apartment. And no, landlord is not interested in installing central AC which requires running ducts all over the roof. But I digress, I care about how much heat my PC puts out (use frame caps to keep FPS at monitor refresh etc) and I doubt that I am alone.
Here we go.....bf2042 4k.....runs at about 50c
Huh. That was very surprising.
Most people seem to think that $500 is a fair price for the RTX 4070. So unless I see a $100 knock off in price, Nivgreedia can keep it and I will simply go for a AMD RX 6800xt which has 16GB VRAM over 256 bit bus for around $500 (it does perform similar to RTX 4070). Also I’ve heard that support for the meta quest 2 via link cable has improved significantly for AMD 6000 series cards.
Ya if our into gaming only go for the AMD. As a studio/redner/creator/AI projects on top of gaming Nvidia is the way to go with the cuda cores and tensorRT
I didn’t get a used 3080 or a new 4070, I went with a used 4070! The main reason why I got it for is power efficiency. I might have to try undervolting mines after watching this video!
Pog
Unless someone is rocking a power supply that would need to be replaced in order to run a 3080, I don't think power efficiency matters to anyone. It may matter at the very high end, like a 3090 or 4090, but other than that I think the only thing that matters is the performance. Also GPUs don't usually just die, the used market is viable, where 3080's are going for just over 400 bucks. Everyone has their own situation, but either way the 4070 is overpriced for what you are actually getting. It's a nearly 600 dollar 3080 with cut corners over 2 years later. It's not that impressive. If all we ever got was previous gen performance for 100 dollars cheaper, the GPU market and the gaming industry would never even exist. This card was a failure for it's price range. I mean there is literally nothing in the previous 700 dollar MSRP range for Nvidia. You have to spend significantly more to get a 4070 Ti, and anything below is a 3080 that was far cheaper to manufacture. I refuse to normalize this stuff. I know people are fatigued about the complaining and the GPU market, but this is just bad, even for Nvidia. The previous 700 dollar model, the 3080, is a $1,200+ GPU. Let that sink in. 500 dollars more in MSRP in one generation with nothing to write home about on the incrased performance charts.
It matters to me. Electricity is expensive here.
But the fact remains that Nvidia is trying to upsell you up to an RTX 4070, as the 4060 Ti and 4060, which would be their most popular GPUs, are absolute dogsh*t compared to previous generation.
I think it has nothin to do with the memory bandwidth. I think people are just more inclined to want to spend $800+ when the card is an 3080/4080+
He finally figured it out.z good on you mate
Sorry to throw some water on the fire. But the 3080 can also be undervolt. And it easily goes down to 220W without losing a lot of fps in the game (less than 5%). And it costs $400 plus change on the used market.... I don't see any reason for so much fuss. And if it is in percentage the undervolt with the same fps the 3080 is more effective to lower 37% and the 4060 ti I mean the 4070 is around 29%.
Still it ain't 150W
@@somebodynamedJ. You can go down to 150W, but I don't think you want to do that or if you need to. A graphics card nowadays having a consumption of 220W with the performance of a 3080 and being able to buy it cheaper than a 4060ti is excellent. At least for me.
I have zero complaints with my 4070 Founders. I just built a brand new PC and buying a used GPU was not an option. I wanted all new everything and the 4070 while still too expensive for what it is was the best price to performance and feature set. No ragrets.
What do you expect from a 192-bit bus. Look at the power draw of 4090, which is a 384 bit.
Why the hell would you use FSR while testing NVidia card?
It works on all GPUs, so if you're doing apples to apples testing of AMD, Intel and Nvidia GPUs, with upscaling you can see exactly how they all measure up with a level playing field. You can then do separate DLSS 3 testing of the Nvidia cards if you want to be very comprehensive to show how much better DLSS 3 is. Obviously DLSS and FSR aren't available on all titles, which is why most (but not all) people looking to upgrade their GPU only care about straight rasterization performance when comparing AMD, Intel and Nvidia GPUs. DLSS and FSR are very nice to have features but until they work in ALL titles, straight rasterization is great metric to see the raw performance of the various GPUs.
Far Cry 6 is one title I can think of that uses FSR but not DLSS. Could use it for that game; and others, if you have an Nvidia card. Just a thought.
@@TheSwayzeTrain he literally tested only one game with upscalling (CP2077) so I don't think it woul dbe such a huge sacrifice to run tests in one game with DLSS. But now when I chekced in couple places it doesn't look like average performance between DLSS2.X and FSR 2.X is significant.
My 1080ti cooked so I was forced to buy a new 4070 and it performs amazing in my old rig. Scored the founders for 600 with Diablo 4 for free
my 6700xt 2nd hand for 200 dollars is a stael
Wow
Nvidia GPU's undervolt VERY well, I assume thanks to their monolithic architecture compared to AMD's chiplet architecture that requires them to be in constant communication through "infinity fabric"
Going by that Intel CPUs should also undervolt well compared to AMD CPUs.
@yumri4 perhaps, I've not attempted undervolting CPU's
@@AxleLotl Watch a guide first and have a day to do it that you can spend doing it just in case it doesn't go well or how far you can bring your CPU is pretty far undervolted while keeping the same stock speed or minor overclock.
where is the 4090TI ??
That's because the 4070 should be the 4060.
Plus. If it was cheaper like 400-450. It will be good. Rn at $600, the 6900xt/6950xt is way better.
This card is a fraction more than an RTX4060Ti 16Gb but performance wise it smashes the RTX4060Ti and if you under volt it and still get far better performance your better off saving a bit longer and getting this card. Nvidia need a reality check on pricing GPU cards. But I'm hearing AMD and Intel have some GPUs incoming at lower prices that will make both RTX4070&4060ti 16Gb look stupid buys & Nvidia knows it and is pressuring board partners not to work with Intel.
On that basis you might as well save up a bit more and get the 4070 ti
IDK, Nvidia sucks. There is no easy answer. I can just say I think the 4070 Ti would have been better at 699 and the 4070 at 499. The prices are terrible still, but not so far out of the range. 4060 Ti should be like 359 8gb and 399 16GB and 4060 should be 279 IMO. Watch HUB's review of the 4060 Ti 16GB and laugh with Steve! It is terrible value proposition.
No you gotta buy nvidia dlss makes your eye sight improve and makes you successful in love life so I buy nvidia . Same as why I buy apple products
DLSS and better RT performance is worth it for me to stick with Nvidia for now. If AMD can fix their RT performance and make FSR3 as good as DLSS2 (I don't care about frame gen, but I do want my image quality to look near-native) then I will 100% consider AMD, my first two GPUs were ATI Radeon (9800 Pro baby!) but I switched to Nvidia with the 8800 GTS and I've never looked back, was never disappointed with my purchase, pricier, sure, but always top of the line with really good drivers for new games (though their control panel seriously needs a refresh lol, that thing hasn't changed significantly in 10 years if not more).
The 4070 would've been great @ $500; @ $600 it competes with the RX 6950 XT which outperfoms it in most games and has 16GB of VRAM, albeit at higher power draw.
Undercoat it just enough to match the 4070 bam.
got my 3080 for 350....
the 4070 is Definitely Underated.. its a really good gpu... 🙂
the price is bad tho
The reviwers have be blamed here ..
i have one! i think it was worth it. all the new games coming out are basically unreal 5 engine games. unreal engine made it very simple to inject dlss and FG with just a plugin now. so i see the newer games having dlss 3
The GPU comparatively is good. But the price ruins the big picture.
So you went to compare undervolted RTX 4070 to not undervolted RTX 3080. That's... creative?
Anyway RTX 4070 is not special in terms of undervolting. You can undervolt 4090 and 4080 all the same or close. Has been known for almost a year. And if you considered comparing UV RTX 4090 to OC RX 7900XTX it would be almost as funny.
Cool
Don't understand you sometimes. Who cares about a few watts when you're paying over 500$ for a GPU. Yes it's very efficient and yes it's not a bad card but the price is just 100-150$ too high, I can buy a used 3080 for 400$ right now so no they're not the same price performance, that said I can buy both cash whenever I want but I don't want either, got a 6600xt, 3060ti, 3070, 2080ti and right now using a 6800xt, happy with the performance, 4k 60 locked in the games I play and usually the 6800xt sits at around 180W, undervolted to 1V and locked at 2300-2400, got the crappy founders cooler so can't OC too much because of temps. Bought the 2080ti and the 6600xt this month for 300$ and 130$, the 6600xt was because of the price, might use it in a PC for sale, the 2080ti is the EVGA FTW3 Ultra and that's for keeps but the guy offered me a Gigabyte 4090 for 1300$ but I passed as no way in hell I'm spending over 1000$ on a GPU.
Just buy a second hand rtx 3090 I paid £600 pounds uk and u can buy them for around £700 from cex in the UK with a 2 year warranty 😀
You mean worn-out mining card. Rather buy RX7900XT it's faster and way better. Stop the Nvidia sheep telling lies as AMD is better
@@FunFunFun8888 well to be fair the rx 7900xt is a decent card but if like me you play at 4k and require at least or close to 120fps then other than the 4090 the 3090 is what I would recommend, at its current price and performance also bare in mind ray tracing and dlss and the 3090 beats the rx7900xt in alot of games all so based on current pricing the rx7900xt is on average £150 to £200 pounds more expensive and I'm sorry but for those few extra frames in a few games, not worth it but that's my opinion 😊
