  • Every now and then someone asks this question so I thought I would make a video about it. How is it that I'm able to travel all the time and not hold down a full time job?
    Circumstances will be different for everybody and there are probably few people that match my situation but this is the complete rundown of my finances.

    I did work at not having debt and keeping my expenses in check. I never factored in the cost of aging relatives when I was younger though. A parent or aunt with failing health can consume more than kids. Fortunately, I'm here to help, and I would never consider not helping, but it is making my own retirement plans much more conservative.
    That being said, I've been in IT for decades. With the remote work opportunities and expanding reach of broadband, I can still sail around the world and manage to get 10-15 hours billable in on an average week which is probably less time than you spend editing. I actually enjoy my work, so it's no chore. However, that plan has to wait on the aforementioned relatives. I can't replace the time I have left with them.

    Hi Jay- you might want to research a 72t. This allows you to take small equal payments from your retirement account without the penalty before 59.5. Because your income is so low you might be able to take those tax free; something like $500.00 per month. Definitely something to research in your spare time.

      I think it's great but definitely not for big people. I've had no trouble with it so far and know that one of its weaknesses is it is easier to rollover and especially worse with a lift. It's definitely capable though and I've pulled a small RV out of the mud before.

    I really wish people were not so negative about making money on TH-cam. I hear a lot of TH-camrs complain all the time that it's impossible to make a living on TH-cam, so they have to make money other ways. But when you check those Social Blade pages of some of the more popular channels, a lot of TH-camrs are making some crazy good money for what they do on TH-cam, really big money. Even some of the smaller channels are making at least enough to get by on. I know it's hard to get started , but once your channel starts growing so does the money. I think serious TH-camrs should concentrate on #1 growing their channel and their ad money, and maybe on donations to help them get by until their channel is profitable enough.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, some channels are doing incredibly well. It's funny the most attractive hikers do the best each thru hike year.

    • @MaxZomboni
      @MaxZomboni 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JayWandersOut Well of course an attractive thumb nail will always get a lot views. But attractive or not, you have to stay focused on your channel content. One very attractive hiker I subscribe to was hitting $1,800 a month with her daily AT vlogs, according to Social Blade . Then she started falling behind on editing and uploading , and in one month her income dropped to about $700 a month, and has been staying at that level. I believe that is her only current income. So losing over 50% of her pay has got to be hurting her. I gave her a couple of friendly comments and suggested that if she was having that much problems getting the videos edited, she should probably cut back on editing and just upload videos with less editing. But she seems determined that the editing must be perfect. Unfortunately TH-cam doesn't pay extra for editing time.

    Hey Jay would you say that a cannon rebel camera would be adequate for making stock video?. I am looking for a camera to video my hikes as well..I want to keep my camera gear simple.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd say yes. Probably 1/3 of my sales were from an Osmo Pocket with a much smaller sensor. When video quality isn't pro level the content is more important. With a camera without stabilization however you'd want only tripod mounted shots as stock footage has to be buttery smooth when moving. There's a lot to it and everybody is always thinking of what to film. Register as a creator at Pond5 then look at the videos of their most sold clips to get an idea of what would do best. Good luck! Getting a nice low aperture lens makes for good looking quality right away. I don't know much about Canon lenses though.

      Van life and outdoors stuff is popular right now in the world. I just keep forgetting to film some outdoorsy things that I could potentially upload. A limitation is not having any brands showing and that makes it tough. The clips have to be smooth as well so no shaking or wobbling or anything like that.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I go in waves of filming then nothing or months. Since most of my videos are nature related most of my clips online are outdoorsy but I'd say those make up 25% of sales. It seems like timeliness of content gets the most sales like when covid started the little clips opening various takeout containers sold multiple times. I filmed those on a whim when some food arrived with the Osmo Pocket. I think passive income is one of the best strategies for making a living while traveling. I even uploaded many clips from my PCT thru hike and sold a couple.
