I always thought it was interesting the way this Predator killed its prey. The snake killed with its fangs. So the predator killed it with his two-pronged blade. When facing the wolf, the predator got down on all fours to kill it. He fought and killed the bear with his bare hands and didn't use weapons. If they used arrows against him, he shot arrows back at them. When the French trappers used nets to try and catch him, he used his own net back against them. I'm not sure if it was just his way of saying no matter what you try, I'm better at it than you. Or maybe it was an honor thing. Not sure. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

My favorite part of the characterization of the Comanche hunters is the matter of fact reaction to the Predator. There was no existential crisis like in some of the other films. For these people, they recognize the physical fact of the creature and have to deal with it.

You can tell the predator is new, it’s his first hunt. He’s taking trophies from less dangerous prey and he’s basically just going around fighting everything. I think that’s a really cool detail, you can tell he’s inexperienced but still has the training of his people. Also the design is really cool, I’m glad they changed it, which could be from it being in the past and not modern, but also could be because he’s new. Like proven predators get better gear as they gain prestige. Just a lot of cool details in this movie that really make it stand out.

The "lion" is a mountain lion, also known as a cougar or puma, much more prevalent in western North America. They can be dangerous, but not in the way African lions are. The largest male won't generally surpass 200 pounds, but it's never a bad idea to be wary of them, even juveniles. They're stunningly beautiful animals.

I used to agree that Naru figuring out about the orange flowers was a bit of a leap, but when I thought about it more I realized the movie had been setting this up for a while; 1st introducing the flowers, 2nd the grass scene where Naru realizes the Predator can see them through solid objects, 3rd that the Predator only hunts other hunters, but once he starts a hunt he will finish the hunt even if his quarry runs.
When the wounded Frenchman comes back to camp armed, Naru knows he fought the Predator and the Predator will finish him off. The man plays dead, which given the grass scene Naru knows that shouldn't work. When the Predator steps on the Frenchman, he's is surprised the guy's still alive and kills him. This lets Naru know the Predator couldn't see him anymore, but the Predator clearly saw him a very short time ago during the fight. What changed in that time? The only new variable was the orange flowers.
Edit: 23:27, 24:10 This is less of a gamble and more of an experiment (though no less badass). Naru recreated the scene with the 1st Frenchman to test her hypothesis about the orange flowers. She stays still until the Predator kills the Frenchman. If it turned out she was wrong then this would keep her safe, since the Predator had already given her a passed on at least 4 occasions at that point.

Hunting culture today is adapted partly through the original cononial and french fur trader hunting but they learned how to hunt in america from natives. So even todays hunting methods and dog hunting come from natives. Though people in europe had hunting dogs first america was a different beast then they were used to. It does get very hot there, but it's not humid like a jungle (the first movie took place in southeast Asia). The tapestry in the credits sort of explains the story with the pistol. The comic version of that story was actually better, in my opinion. The Predator got it as a gift from a besieged human pirate captain that he was fighting alongside. The captain was trying to fight off his crew who was mutinying against him, and the Predator respected his resolve and jumped in to help. Also, they just announced a sequel to this. I can't wait.

A thing to query is . . . - I think she actually either killed the lion with her lance or mortally wounded it . . . as I'm sure it would have attacked her on the ground after she fell and went unconscious with then being an easy victim - or meal for it . . . (even lions wouldn't pass up an easy meal or a kill like that!) - So, I think her brother either had an easy kill or a free kill when he reached her - so had enough time to take her home then go back to the dead lion - or killed it off before he took her home and came back to claim it as his own kill . . . (Perhaps his own masculine pride got in the way of allowing his sister to become a War Chief to the tribe before him? - (You saw how the other guy, the one who demeaned her and fought with her felt when her actual brother got it - so just imagine if she got it and he had to follow her orders after it? lol)
Strange info: - I'm sure I read about this somewhere or other decades ago: But you asked why would she even want to become a hunter? What I remember about what I read then from some western style history book - was that some (a few) men who did not want to become warriors could be allowed to do menial tasks instead, like the women did . . . Just as some women (a few) did not wish to do menial work and wanted to hunt like the men, etc, instead - so a role-reversal was allowed even back in those days, or perhaps even earlier back in time, too . . . ?

1, I'm disappointed that you couldn't bring yourself to see Naru as the hero of the story. Or capable of taking down the Predator. Smaller/ Faster/ SMARTER fighters take out more powerful fighters more than you'd expect. See Crawford v. Spence or Vietnam v. USA.
2, You missed Naru's biggest advantage. It wasn't a "Wild Guess", In all of her encounters with the Predator she was learning about it's strengths and WEAKNESS'. The Orange flower effect was seen by Naru twice before she tried it, and then did an experiment with the French Tracker before she put herself in Danger. Her "Superpower" was adaptability. To make that work she had to be constantly updating her working knowledge of the Predators capabilities.
This easily the best Predator movie. That being said, It wouldn't exist without the movies that came before.

Really, it’s more difficult to believe Dutch figured out the thermal vision thing because at the same time he was also well camouflaged in our visual spectrum by the mud and was completely still with his arms hooked around large tree roots. Would have been more likely to assume they just have shitty vision when it’s looking at a monochromatic view and everything is the same colour like in a mud pit. Also as it’s coming out of the water it’s tech is shorting out, so could have been the reason it couldn’t see him ect.

One aspect of this movie, my now favorite in the Predator series (Edging out the first one by a bit), is that there's still some mysteries here. The Frenchmen seem to be here clearly to hunt the Predator, how did they know he was in the region? Raphael does not appear to be traveling with them willingly, and also knows more about the Predator than he says. They burned down a small copse of forest to create ash, which disrupts it's cloaking device. (Funny how THIS Predator's cloak is not impacted by water.) There was a Dark Horse comic series featuring Raphael as a pirate who encounters the Predator, it feels like they are throwing out some strings they could potentially tug on later.

Some details fyi; the Predator didn't kill the buffalo. The Frenchmen did. They poached them for their furs.
There was no subtitles for everything said in French because we were watching the film from Naru's perspective.
When Tabe was fighting one on one and the Predator went invisible, Tabe screamed something like That's cheating in Comanche.
In many indigenous cultures, whistling at night summons bad spirits. Which is what Naru did when she got her revenge on the French guy.
This was the first hunt for Naru and the Predator, they both had to prove themselves. But Naru consistently showed she was more cunning.
The celebration by her community and being given the staff looking thing was them crowning a new war chief.

Fun fact: The dog in this movie they got from a dog shelter. It wasn't a professional trained Hollywood dog or anything.
Oh, this wasn't the jungle, it was the great plains in the US.

The pistol Nauru got from the italian guy is the one that the elder predator gifts to Harrigan(Danny Glover) in Predator 2.
How they come to possess it is not known yet. While we see a fleet of ships descending upon the comanche in the end credits, it's not yet known what happens.
Either A: Naaru's village are all exterminated to maintain the predators' existence a secret.
Or B: she gifts the pistol to their elder as a sign of peace, and she gains their respect.

Remember the end of Predator 2: they didn't kill Glover, they collected their fallen hunter, and gave Glover a reward for his victory. The ships at the end of Prey went there to collect their fallen hunter and tech, and gave Naru a reward for her victory. A common practice of Native American tribes was to give a gift in return for a gift. What better gift than the weapon that helped secure her victory, the pistol?
