A Nice View Doesn't Make a Great Photograph

  • I get in my camper van and escape for a couple of days of landscape photography. I climb a nearby fell and photograph the mist as it descends over Derwent Water, however a great view doesn't always mean a great photograph.

    Poor composition. Cliched subject matter. Lack of technique. Ham-fisted editing.... Well, that's enough about MY photography. Your's, on other hand, is inspirational. Your videos are a fantastic peek into your creative process. Long may you keep making them.

    I really love these videos! I'm really into photography myself and got some decent equipment laying around here that I bought throughout the years but the only problem is that where I live there's absolutely NOTHING that I think is nice enough to be worth photographing. I live in Belgium and the only place worth shooting would probably be the Ardennes... So it's really frustrating to be into nature photography but not being able to actually shoot anything.

      Well the photography part of it is really that simple. Finding those stunning locations and at those locations finding great compositions is the hard part in landscape photography. And, this video shows once more, you need a bit of luck too because we can't control the weather. But that's the great part about landscape photography. It is hard but when it all comes together it is so rewarding.

      I love all the videos that Thomas does. His pictures comes out just beautifull. This guy so talanted! But...."that moment at 5:05"... it hurts me so much! I would't "crop" this image SO small. In my opinion the image looked MUCH MORE BETTER from the vloging camera (Heaton's new canon 200d). I mean you can see there this ray sourse...you can see the river curve...there were more colours collboration...it was really spectacular!
      But when it was cropped it looked nothing more then sun ray added after in photoshop, though the final image looked good....IMHO....

    Just illustrates the landscape photographer’s challenge; that the light can’t be commanded and if it doesn’t happen then you have to accept it. The other lesson you have demonstrated perfectly, Thomas, is that when the light does happen, you just have to go for it. Another genuine, highly engaging and watchable video.

    Hey Thomas, why just fire one shot? I mean even if the light is not directly on the island, why not try one say at f8, another 24mm and so many other variables, then decide if the other shots are good enough when you get to the editing? I am wondering if you are leaving other great images in the field. These videos of yours are exceptional, after watching I feel encouraged and entertained.

    • @ralfjansen9118
      @ralfjansen9118 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Rick Mentore The image does not happen in the camera but in the photographer's mind. Once taken, work is done, especially with conditions getting worse quickly. "Spray and pray" is a beginners' way of doing it.

    • @markbaigent8373
      @markbaigent8373 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly

    • @RickMentore
      @RickMentore 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      My question was simply, why take a single image of a scene, why not try different comp and settings, in other words why not, "work the seen"! The question was an observation not negative criticism!

    • @nickbedford
      @nickbedford 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Rick Mentore hmm that I think depends on the photographer and their experience. Over years I've learnt to slow down and skip some of the shots I know won't quite work enough and just focus more on the strongest ones I have at my disposal (due to current weather or light etc). Sometimes you also need to be ready with your shot for the light and conditions to appear at a moment's notice.
      Not to mention Thomas has to spend time filming the episode which means you have to pick your battles.

    • @davidstorer4706
      @davidstorer4706 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I think a big part of making really outstanding photographs is having the capability, confidence and vision to take just one shot. There's no 'spreading your bets' or 'suck it and see', and no 'trying out' this or that. Envision the shot, decide how to take it, dial in the settings, and press the (remote) shutter release at the chosen moment. Your chances of capturing a 'nice image' would, of course, be greater with a spray and pray approach ... checking out all the options. But your chances of capturing a 'great image' are much higher if you focus on just that one shot. Raise the stakes higher and you will think more clearly and achieve more.

  • @paristo

    I think you missed it by a few seconds... Compare 5:01 vs 5:03 (cut between but still) as just like in 5:34 the arrow pointing the moment, when your camera was in pieces by having body in hand and lens still in a bag because you were wasting time with a tripod... :-/
    You would have got that shot if you would have been using Olympus 5-axis IBIS (best in the industry, regardless what Sony and Panasonic has even now) as you would have a change to use a 12-100mm f/4 with E-M1 II for easily a 3-4 second shutter speed.
    The reason to use the tripod is to use a HR mode (for 80Mpix raw files), 60 FPS for stacking, when you need to do very long exposures or you need to just wait and take shots waiting the moment.
    When one gets to such quick situations all the time, the tripod and low stabilization system limitations just hits hard.

    Nice Work Thomas. Like the slightly new style using the new vlogging camera. You can really tell you are putting in the extra effort into the B-roll. Have you been drawn in like 90% of the youtube community into the Peter Mckinnon "B-roll" way of editing?? haha

    Hey Thomas, Who is flying the drone? Why not fly it down closer to the lake and look around. Is there a drone ghost pilot following you? Tell us about the camper van!! Just push the button, and take the shot. It's not like the film days when we had to count ever exposure. You may never know when you might need a shot. Your wife Charlotte must be the most understanding person ever. You are never home. The Lake District must be a popular spot. I've seen several videos of the area. Is it a UK "national park?" Ever see any animals on your treks? Might make for an interesting composition. As always, top notch advice from you. Be careful, no more falling. Rush, SC, USA

    Working my way through a lot of your videos Tom. Consistently great. Informative. Great photography. Most importantly though, you’re a top guy. Keep up the great work man.

    NEVER loose a shot, for the sake of keeping the video running smooth Tom. You can always reshoot a video, but that light may never happen again.
    Keep up the great work buddy :)

    Hey Tom. Maybe You could try and do some video where You shoot some awesomness with rebel series and standard kit on APSC / 4/3 ? Much people have issues and problems with thinking that only FF is the way to go ;)

    I really love your work. And the videos themselves are so soothing with the peaceful, slightly melancholic music and the views. For example right now i woke up in the middle of the night and can't fall asleep again so I fired up YT on my phone and saw your video. The background music hit the spot perfectly. Good job.

    For the first time ever..... I have to say your title is misleading. You had a WONDERFUL view for all those images.
    Try coming to Swindon.... there are NO nice views here haha. Anyway. It IS another amazing video. And it’s got me hyped for my trip to Derwent Water soon!

    TKS for your postings! My photography friend in Cambridge suggested I would profit from your youtube postings and he is quite right. I'm heading to the canyon lands of the U.S. southwest for a couple months of camping and landscape photography practice; I appreciate the tips you pass along.

    As an ametuer photographer I just love to get out with the camera, hike around and enjoy the fresh air here in Donegal. I don't watch much TV, just reviews on photography gear on TH-cam, I came accross your channel and I love your shows, views, your gear, the music, the way about how you see things in a relaxed way. Your photography is amazing, I hope you keep making your videos on here, it's so chilled out, I shut myself away from the world and watch your shows for an hour every evening with a wee cuppa tea. Fantastic work!!! Keep it up.

    Thomas, one of your best videos yet. You were in one of the best locations in The Lakes. With Skiddaw and Bassenthwaite in the background. Looks like the walks were almost as good as the camera work. Next time, go to the Dog and Gun, in Keswick, and get the Goulash!Absolutely brilliant after a good walk and some camera carrying.More of this area and more detail on the camera settings/shoot/lense options.

    I don't know if it's just the way you edit your vlogs, but it's seems as though your batting average is pretty high... I can go out for a day, take 100/125 images and when I've sorted them, I'm lucky to have 4 or 5 images that's are any good. But in this video, 2 out of 3 set ups resulted in very good images.

    Would it be possible for you to take that pic from 6:26 without using a tripod? What were your exposure times at F/11 and ISO100 (I assume)? What I'm thinking is that when you have such a brief moment to capture the moment, maybe it's worth a shot to try handheld? I mean, if you have IS, then you might be able to get a decent fraction of shots without a blur, so just fire a burst and hope for your steady hand to give you at least one good pic. What do you think?

    Its true that a nice view doesn't make a great photograph, because you my friend tend to take bad photos most of the time lol. But let me tell you something, the very first important rule about landscape photography.... L O C A T I O N ! ! ! ! now please, I understand your frustration sometimes, but be sincere in what you deliver... Let people know the truth about photography.

    I often read in these comments here, that you should leave your backyard to explore more of the world's places. This might be an option to think about, but hey - why to do so? Your backyard is "absolutely stunning". To have such an area near to you, thats presents you day by day the beauty of nature, is a god sent present. So - "stay there, be patient" - and enjoy your trips to lake district. Keep on going Thomas - I am waiting for some great new pictures of you in 2018. Thanks for sharing your impressions.

    Hey Thomas great kick off to 2018, any chance you can go over your hiking gear, boots, clothing etc. I'm in Australia and watching your videos over the past year has inspired me to get out and go hiking, I've looked at boots and as you would know there are so many different styles and prices. Also what tripod did you have on this shoot? Cheers Joe

    Another very enjoyable video. But I have a question. The shot of the outcropping that you rushed to capture, I would have pulled the shot back a little to get more of the sun's rays. Then, those rays would have drawn your eye to the outcropping. As you were talking and composing, that's what my eyes did. Any thoughts? Would really like to hear .....

    As always, love you videos.
    I just have one question...
    In your second image, it appears to me that you didn't use a lens hood.
    It looks washed out and with little contrast, from left to right, sure to light flare.
    Was this your intention?
    Thanks again for the great inspiration.
    Regards!
