Sony Power Zoom Lens. (18-200mm)

- At some point all photographers or videographers will need a good solid zoom lens, and for me my favourite zoom lens for Sony cameras is the Sony 18-200 mm power zoom lens. There's just something special about this lens, it is hard to explain. I love the look my video gets from using this lens. Now this lens isn't perfect and in this video I go on to explain why I almost got rid of this lens but after all I decided to keep the lens and I am happy I did.

Thanks, the only remote I use is model RMT-845 it is an older remote but it does allow me to zoom and record.
What camera was used for this review? It looks so sharp, nice and clear. Great review. I just bought a used Nex VG30 camcorder which should work perfectly with this lens. A silver Oss 18-55 came with it. I like the power feature on the Sony 18-200 lens and the soft buttery look it gives videos that I see in reviews much like your test videos. Thanks for sharing your opinion of the lens, very helpful.
Hi Kevin, I use the Sony a6400 for my videos. This lens is excellent though, it really does give off an unique look, I cannot explain it, I just really like the look of the image.

Will it be alright to use Zoom ring manually in the sony camara kit lens comes with Powe Zoom facility. I have a feeling that it will affect to power zoom motor
Have you had any experience with the 18-105mm f/4 PZ (It's also not FE)? If so, how would you compare it.
I'm so intrigued with the color/clarity you rave about + the 200mm reach.
The two cons I have though is that aperture and weight since I'm mounting it to a Hydra Alien/Ronin-S.

Hey Francie, I have used the 18-105 and I really like that lens. I am not a big fan of the f/4 but when shooting outdoors it was great. You make a great point about this lens and the aperture and weight, they are not great. Also the size of this 18-200 is a bit odd with the rounded bottom, I have found it to be a bit difficult to use, but I am still glad to have this lens and it still gives me a very unique look...that I can't explain!

Hi, I was wondering if you could help, I am currently using this lens with the Sony A6000 (I am about to purchase the Sony A6600). I am using this lens for sports videography, and I am experiencing an issue with the zoom being out of focus when zooming in past 80mm, anything after that is blurry. I have no idea whether this is an issue with the lens or my camera.

I am not sure. I am able to go 300mm on my camera without it getting too blurry. I know why you zoom in too far you lose some f stop but I am always crisp at 80mm. Sorry to hear that.
Have you ever had a problem to where when In servo or manual mode on the lens the camera won’t focus?

Yes it's a great lens with better OSS even at 200mm, I can do clear moon shots even at 1/100 :)
Ya it really is a good lens. I tried to shoot the full moon back in the spring but it clouded over that day.
What if you using A6500 that has IBIS and this lens does it work together.
Do you know of any power zoom lenses that would be good for doing interviews and blur out the background?

I'm thinking of switching over to the Alpha camera series with 16-50 PZ lens for recording Hockey games as I can't zoom out far enough with a Sony AX-53. Is the zoom function controlled on the camera or lens?
Hey Erin, I cover a lot of hockey up here in Ottawa, including shooting NHL games with the Ottawa Senators. The 16-50 lens is actually pretty good, you might find you cannot get tight enough with the 50mm but it may be okay. I believe that lens has the zoom control on the lens. The Sony PZ 18-200 also has the zoom control on the lens. Good luck with the upgrade and shooting some hockey games, keep your head up if you are shooting on the bench! Damn pucks 😀

At first I didn't really like using this lens, it was frustrating to use, but after using for a while I fell in love with this lens. It might not be for everyone but I am happy to have this lens in my kit. What about you, what are some of your favourite lenses?
is the power zoom only for video?
@@NoahAWeinbaum nope it works for photos and video. You can turn off the power zoom if you want to go manual.
@@DavidDavies aren't all Sony bodies accompanied by power zoom? Or does this function on the lens simply make it easier to switch than searching for it in settings?
@@NoahAWeinbaum this power zoom has a switch that allowes you to make a zoom at a consistent speed, there a high, medium, and low speed option. This way you can zoom at a consistent speed without any bumps or jumps in the zoom speed, not many lens have that option.

Your there option is the much larger 18-200 non servo version
Does the power zoom work on the Sony FS5 with the side handle zoom buttons or do you have to use the controls on the lens?
Damn, that is a good question! You know what, the next time I use the FS5 I will try it out. I'm guessing it does work because it works with the Sony 18-105 pz lens.

At 4:15 you mention "clear zoom". Is that a setting? I'm not familiar.
Will this lense fit in the Sony FDR-X700
I don't believe so. If the X700 has an e mount system it will work but I don't think the lens comes off on that camera.

Red Arrow Media just checked it’s a fixed lense. I do have a Nikon D3100 which has removable lense , you just press the button and twist . Haven’t really used that for video as no flip up screen

Right!!! The motor positioning is my biggest pet peeve about this lens. It's so frustrating. I have to use my cage on my camera to make the lens work properly. I agree with you!

Do you recommended for basketball pictures?
That depends on how the lighting is in the gym? If you are shooting outdoors I think it would be good. I have filmed hockey but they lighting was good and the ice is really bright so it helps. If the lighting isn't good the lens may be too slow for bball

Hi Doron, I don't have a link as I bought it at a local camera shop, but this is the tripod: MANFROTTO PIXI EVO MINI TRIPOD BLACK. It pretty decent and not too expy.

I think that was the "kit lens" for the first interchangeable-lens camcorder Sony made, back in the NEX days. It's probably 10 years old. The design matches the camcorder it shipped with.
@@TheNefastor yep, it was the kit lens for the camcorder. They still sell it as a stand alone lens. This one is about 9 years old I think. Still works great.

Will this lens fit in sony a7iii?
It will fit but there will be a crop in the image so you will not get the full frame look, but it will work.
This lens's main apperal is for video shows like concert, runway show, performance on the stage, etc. For those case a power zoom video lens is essential. I have the 18-105 f4 power zoom lens. The tele end is not enough for most of the time. If you shoot this type of video a lot and you do not want to buy a dedicated eng style video camera. This lens will get the job done.
Will the sony bluetooth grip, tele-wide rocker button control the lens on a A6600?
I am not sure if it will work, it's an older lens. The autofocus works really well with the a6400 but I am not sure if the bluetooth technology would work with the lens

I didn't talk about portraits and photos much, but it does take very nice photos. The Lens is not very fast but it does a nice job.
