I'm 70, and still adore Tower of Power with all of their brass! Thank you for the years of joy that you have given to me. You're the best! I am grateful for this awesome video that I have to watch and listen to daily. Bless all of you for the gift of you to us. I love you!
Just pure chills from the horns intro!!!! Then tears from the beautiful memories of growing up in the Bay Area, and listening to TOP. They were such a huge part of my 70's Mendocino Music Camp experience as well. ❤
My wife & I were with TOP for New Year’s Eve 2012-13, 2 days after we got married, this song, with Larry doing his MAGIC to it….. ALWAYS will be with me. I lost my wife to Covid Oct2021, so Larry’s version is DEEP inside us
This is THE signature song of Tower of Power from 1972, and one of the most beautiful, exquisite love ballads ever written! Heartfelt, soulful, and packed to the core with emotion. The opening horns soar gloriously, sweeping across the heavens, and then, they suddenly come crashing to a halt, as the vocals gently begin. He's in love with a woman, a few years older than he. She tells him repeatedly he's wasting his time, he's just too young for her. But he won't have it; he's a good man, he'll make her happy....no, he's not wasting his time. Someday she'll understand...just what it means when a man comes to her with his little heart in his hands! He'll never, never, never, never do her wrong....all he wants right now is just to get next to her, just to hold her, and please her. And then, as the song ends in a wound-up crescendo and stops on a dime, the final trumpet is joined by the rest of the brass section with a stunning grande finale. This composition is one of those rare ones that can truly be defined as TIMELESS....
i'm 25 years old today, fell in deep love with a woman 5 years older, two years ago. almost had a child with this unique soul of a woman. broke my heart so hard. tears rolling down my face listening to this. hardest heart break i've EVER had in my life. hits so hard. so hard. but i'm still a young man
Larry Braggs Takes This Song To A Whole Nother Performance Level, No One Does This Song Better Then Larry, The Anniversary TOP Horns Were Simply Amazing!!!
My absolute favorite version of my favorite TOP song. That's like an entire Big Band worth of horns on the stage. The vocals, the soul, and the musicianship reinforce why TOP is my favorite band. But pay close attention at :29. At the end of the opening riff, there's something about Mic's fist pump that gives me wings. As gifted as he was, he played with so much love and soul.
Just so awesome!!! I have listened to this 100 times!! All the old band members together for the 40th anniversary!! All those horns sound unbelievable!! And Larry Braggs… what can I say?? Perfect!!❤❤❤❤
I can watch this vid a thousand times and never get tired of it. Larry Braggs absolutely KILLIN' IT on vocals with the greatest band behind him. WOW! What else could be said?!?!
I'm guessing it was Mic that did the very high trumpet work at the start and end of the song. Great power and tone. Thanks, Mic, for all the good music. You will be missed.
My all-time favorite, and I've heard a LOT of music in my 64 years. I loved it the first time I heard it, I've loved it when I've seen Tower of Power in concert, and I love it right now as I listen to it right now. It always gives me chills!
Wow, I just saw your note listening to Tower of Power 9 years ago. Who ever you are, I hope that you're still alive and listening, like I have since the late 60s.
Believe it or not, we'd go see them at a small place in Hayward California 1968! Check out Cold Blood too! I was so lucky to have grown up in the bay area. Linda Tillary, Two Tons of Fun! Check them out!
This tune is NO JOKE. Horns, "killin' it" rhythm section great BGVs and the lead vocal....you ladies be sure and listen real well, because this is the real deal. And you young folks (especially musicians) listen real good too. Ain't no button pushing and computer nonsense going on here, just real players, great vocals and great music you gotta be able to play to make it sound this great. WORD.
MAN OH MAN! This dude "kill't" it! I've heard this song eleventeen bajillion and one times, and this was the first time I got the chills listening to it.
My girlfriend and I were there for the taping of this in Park City Utah. I also used to attends their shows when I was back home in the Bay Area when they started out. You could say that I'm a lifetime fan! Their original singer Rick Stevens is a good friend of mine. He recently sang with them again when he was released from prison after 36 years.
Rick said in an interview that it was a highlight for him singing with the band one last time. This came out when I was still a young man, trying to win the love of the beautiful young divorcee' next door. When I finally told her how much I loved her, she said these words to me and I heard this song that night. She was a southern girl and when Rick says "Just to get a mess of you and hold you" ...that really spoke to me.I played the song for her and...we spent a lot of time grooving to this and other songs. You could say Rick Stevens won her heart for me. I was sad when Rick Stevens passed. I kept on thinking what if? But I know he found truth while in prison and that helps. Thanks for the story sir.
I love this beautiful song, timeless.. I have loved both Lenny & Steve as lead vocalists giving all the respect however the vocal abilities of Larry Bragg!!! stepped all the way up. The band is as a whole , in my opinion some of the greatest musicians. Way to go on the Anniversary, only better.
Watching this video now really gives me new appreciation for what Mic Gillette was. As gifted as he was, you can tell he absolutely loved what he did. That fist pump after the opening fanfare - so good! Rest funky, Mic. Thanks for the music, man.
I keep listening to this. It's just gorgeous, beautiful and euphoric at the same time. And the story the song tells is beautiful. Just lovely lyrics and delivery.
This song gives me the chills! As a woman who has always been around boys and how they felt. It’s a lot of pressure on a man. I appreciate everything my man does for me ❤
I was there I saw TOP Knock this out of the park I think they had 14 horn players on the stage anyone that had ever played with them was a great show 10-18-2008 @ the Fillmore San Francisco Ca
Magnificent performance! Never heard Larry Braggs. Awesome job by all involved, even the audio personnel for recording a really well EQed version of this. Had wanted to play trumpet with the original guys but it wasn't in the cards. Great job again...
My My, Good memories & good life when this music was around. The good old days it was, things r so different now not the same. Tower of Power one of the greatest groups!! 👍
TOP: one of my all-time favorite groups. Chops out the wazoo for all. On top of that, the Horn Section is tighter than a frog's ass and that's water-tight...!!!!
I saw them at the Paramount in Portland back in the mid 70's. They opened for Cold Blood. The crowd had them do three encores. They were on fire that night. Still one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
Great song! I remember in 1969 (album - Bump City) when the only trumpet players were Mic Gillette and Greg Adams. Between the two of them, they both hit the high notes and did not crack a note. Back then, Rick Stevens was the man. However, the best lead singer from Tower of Power was the one and only Lenny Williams when he joined them on their third album simply titled "Tower of Power"
Started listening to top when I was stationed in Sacramento in '70. Saw perform for the first time in '71 in LA at the fabulous forum. They opened for Buddy Miles then Santana. Buddy Miles had most of the audience jumping but I love top!

One of the best songs ever. I could listen to this song over and over again. Love the brass, the vocals, the bass line, the bluesy feel, everything.
Seeing Tower of Power live was an unbelievably life changing experience! Once in a lifetime kind of band right here folks!
Still a masterpiece... sadly, no one can step up to the plate today in 2021 and create music this strong. Sad.
So true
You know they may not be as legendary, but you should look up Dirty Loops. They are doing some pretty cool stuff.
Man! You got that right. Never again.
Try “thee sacred souls” , I hope they keep making music.
@@glovebox4654 You've got taste! I love Dirty Loops and Jonah Nilsson! More funk than soul, but I love them nonetheless!
OMG that was tremendously fantastic!!!! His voice control is superb! And the horns---AWESOME N THRILLING!!!!

I agree, I've never really liked it until heard this version of it. They really did their thing.
Rest in Funk and Power, Mic Gillette. You set the bar for trumpet players with your intro of "You're Still a Young Man" back in the day.
+Ron P. Muriera Well met, my brother.
