Excerpt from The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet: *I met my Dad's eyes. He simply glanced from me to Darcy, and then asked, "So, young man- do you like trains?"* Let's just say I just about died.
I swear this is the most women empowering version of pride EVER! First Lydia isn't saddled with a dirtbag for life because of a stupid mistake she made when she was young. Second, Bing moves WITH Jane to New York instead of asking her to stay and delay her career. And third, Lizzie choosing to be with the guy but on her own terms with out having to work for him. Damn this is a great show. Pemberly you earned your Emmy, high fives to you.
Yes but minor detail, Lydia does get the chance of a dickham free life. The part of the militia, Darcy sets him up with is one that would be highly involved in a war. So Jane Austen basically set Lydia up to become a widow in the foreseeable future...
I think it's also important to remember that when Austen was writing, it was by far the most empowered women had ever been portrayed in British society (or most of European society) at the time. That's why I love this retelling so much, because it takes the context of Austen's era (in which her book would have been seen as extremely progressive) and re-frames it for our modern context, in which the same story beats just wouldn't play out the same way over 100 years later. Also, can you tell im going back to all my favorite old youtube videos, lmao
@@CarolAuslanderin Collins is forced, pretending to be something he is not, to receive professional gratification and is desperate for his patron's approval, due to how he grew up. Darcy grew up in said circle and doesn't feel forced or invasive. his life shapes his vocabulary, not the other way round
I love how the equivalent to Jane Austen's marriage proposals are jobs in the same city as each other. :) It definitely embraces the whole women in the working world. :)
They did an excellent job adapting the ladies into roles that fit them in the modern world. They all have agency in the original, that's what Jane Austen puts into her characters, especially her women. But in a world that has changed (though still has a long way to go), it's really refreshing to see them make characters that still maintain their original but work well without sacrificing either the plot of character development
He's such a Spock, this is eerie. His extensive and professional vocabulary, his incapability of interacting normally with other human beings (occasionally giving off bad first impressions), his poor management of emotions, though he cares deeply about the people he loves and would do anything to keep them happy and safe, the fact that they both managed to date a social, extroverted, beautiful person (yes, I'm a Spirk shipper) and his inability to detect teasing. HE IS SO SPOCK, LIZZIE, AS A TREKKIE, YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN!!!
Lol. He is like. "Dammit Lizzie, I want you to be the girl who dates the boss. I had so many fantasies about it. You are crushing my dreams right now!"
I love how this interpretation of Jane Austen sees success of young women = career and professional achievements, as that is the equivalent nowadays to what marriage used to be. I think it's a lovely translation for a modern age.
They sit so close together. I always wonder where their legs are because sometimes its pretty much as if lizzie's sitting on his lap... and I am not opposed to that
He's still so awkward. "It might terrify you less if you had a job lined up." His delivery is such that you can tell Darcy has been practicing saying that, maybe even back when they were becoming friends at Pemberly. And if Lizzie had heard that before realizing that Darcy is just a socially awkward butterfly, she would so have taken that as criticism of her life planning skills. They've come so far.
I also noticed how socially awkward he is when he said "had I known about the causal nature of social interaction..." And I'm glad that they kept with that in his character. Usually, in pride and prejudice, he seems to be a different character by this point in the story. He's no longer disagreeable at all-- basically a completely different person than the one she first met (and immediately disliked.) Anyways, the point that I'm making is that I'm pleased that they kept him socially awkward and made his character consistent. That he's not just suddenly smooth and completely different than how he originally was.
Shaindy Stern I always thought it was interesting in the book how Mrs Gardiner & Lizzy meet Georgiana and are able to recognize that her quietness is shyness and not pride and treat her accordingly. In the book the narration says that those who felt themselves inferior might see her as full of pride (or something like that). I’ve always been fascinated by that line because Darcy when he arrives in a Meryton is considered ate up with pride because he doesn’t talk with anyone outside of his party at the assembly. Later when he meets Lizzy at Rosings she brings up the assembly and he basically says he’s not good with strangers and she just tells him to try harder. Granted Darcy was rude about Lizzy at the assembly (although he wasn’t talking to her at the time and probably wasn’t aware he was overheard) but it always bugged me how quickly she recognized and acknowledged Georgiana’s shyness but refused to acknowledge Darcy’s.
@@NoPowerintheVerse I think because Georgiana is a girl and Darcy is a guy? And men were meant to be not-shy but women could very easily be? But I'm not sure. You do have a good point.
Nurse08 I always saw it partially as a development in character from Lizzie trying not to be so quick to judge, but also because they had heard so much about Georgiana that was positive before meeting her. A lot of Lizzie’s opinions of characters are also spread in gossip too. Bingley is kind, Jane is beautiful, Darcy is horrible, and Wickham is charming. There’s actually lots of buildup throughout the book about how great Georgiana is. I think the only one who questions that is Wickham who is trying to distance himself from her and make Lizzie further dislike Darcy. I suppose it’s also contrasted by the negative gossip had about how loud Lydia and Kitty are (whom annoy Lizzie) with this shy, accomplished girl (whom Lizzie befriends rather quickly). But I mostly just think it’s reflecting how Lizzie is much more open to all things Darcy related, because Georgiana is clearly Darcy’s soft spot throughout the novel. Lizzie’s friendship with her is also indication of how she’s falling for the softer parts of Darcy.
@@shakibzz i think it was because Georgiana was not as adept as Darcy in hiding her shyness. Darcy was shy, yes, but he was also adept at making it difficult for most people to know that, using his status and veneer of distance and haughtiness as mask for what he probably saw as a weakness considering the time period it is set in. He probably only allowed some people to see beyond the mask and while he tried to let Lizzy see it after he startes liking her, by that time she had become too prejudiced to be able to see. So the reason their interactions became different in Pemberly was because by then, Lizzy had understood him enough to try to look beyond the surface while he used the familiar surroundings to loosen his mask.
Darcy has not only entered the night they kissed into his calendar, but he also had Lizzie's graduation/completion of her degree in his calendar. That's amazing.
"Lizzie kissed me at X:XX cementing ourselves into a relationship. Do not forget the day" what he wrote. What he thought "YES YES YES YES YES. Lizzie likes me and now she is my girlfriend. (he still has to think in relatively proper stick-up-the-butt-English) Months of waiting and millions of dollars spent worth it for that kiss alone".
One thing that shows just how far Darcy's come along in his own character development is how he's the one teasing/trolling Lizzie about lunch with CdB. Darcy at the Gibson wedding would've been way to stuck up to tease anyone. (Fun fact: The last line Darcy says, 'We have to go!' was ad-libbed by DVG, according to the DVD commentary for this episode.)

He ran his fingers through her hair, she didn't so much run her fingers as use her left hand to grab the hair on the top back of his head, palm would have been rubbing the back of his head. She used the tie to pull him in and keep him close, he pulled her in with his left hand, fairly gingerly, tender it could be called, on her right shoulder while his right hand went through the left side of her face, through her hair, eventually cupping her right cheek. Most likely kissed her neck on her right side, because her pulse points were open on that side. TeenageDemise Huh, okay, nearly a year after I wrote that but I must stand by my word. Lizzie stared into Darcy's eyes pulling him in close with his tie. They leaned in together, Lizzie drawing him in all the way to her lips. When they finally kissed it was like an explosion between them, she dropped her right hand from his tie and grabbed the back of his head. He pulled her into him, lightly grabbing her by the shoulder, then when she was as close to him as possible he brought his hand up and caressed her face. He then trailed kisses from her mouth to her cheek, then down her neck. Then she softly pushed him back, nodding at the camera, and he quickly recomposed himself, realizing he did not want to make "that type" of video. Is that good enough? I fell in love the way you fall asleep - slowly, and then all at once
It was hinted at last video and is now confirmed. Lizzie Bennet is a tie grabber. That makes her even more adorable and wonderful.
And those napping pods? Women swoon!" LOL
He fell in love the way you fall asleep...slowly...and then all at once.
It's embarrassing how much these two make me giggle xDD Love them, I really missed them, really glad I rewatched the entire show :)
Did anyone else came back a year later to this, and STILL cry with happiness?
I hope not just me.... :S
I just simply love every single version of this story .... 😍
I am literally crying from the cuteness!
THE I CANNOT FIX THE HOUR WAS IN HERE AND MY LIFE IS COMPLETE. it still gets me.
I just love to see how Lizzie is "nerdy" in front of Darcy, it's just so natural and heartwarming and as in the book and I CAN'T STAND THIS SERIES, IT'S PERFECT
"slowly then all at once"
I can't believe I've never noticed this before, but they're MATCHING. Goodness.
I made like a strangled noise at that jump-cut between Lizzie about to kiss Darcy and the shot of them pulling back looking all flustered. Imagine! The illustrious Mr. Darcy with his immaculate hair all ruffled.
"I have it in my calendar." What a goof!
Darcy: It has been, without a doubt, the best week of my life.
Me: YOU'RE KILLING ME MAN!
I love the sound of his voice.
"I was in the middle before I knew that I'd begun." GAHHHH
He has a pocketwatch. A POCKETWATCH.
"I was in the middle before I knew I had begun" shiitake. I was actually in tears this whole video.
me, sobbing after watching this series for the millionth time: *they have a miraculous love*
I CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE WHO BURST INTO TEARS WHEN HE SAID "I HAVE IT IN MY CALENDAR"
"Slowly then all at once."
!!!!! BECOMING one of his competitors !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is so perfect
I am here many years too late but man oh man Lizzie was /so/ sitting on darcy's lap & it was so good
I simply love how Lizzie plays with Darcy's tie.
The way he says Gigi! Gets me every time.
Simultaneously squeeing and crying because AHHHH DIZZIE SO FREAKING PERFECT but I'm forever alone BUT AHHHH DARCY!!! AND LIZZIE!! TOO CUTE FOR WORDS! but this is the end and there's no more LBD to binge-watch. Too many conflicting feelings!
When he said relationship I was just AAAAAHHHHh so cuteeeeee
His smile when she teases him 😩😍
AWWW YEAH GOOD JOB LIZZIE
honestly I was a bit worried the "happy ending" would involve shameless nepotism but Lizzie's actually becoming an entrepreneur--SO much more satisfying a conclusion.
i can't even! all that anticipation and i can barely get through this between bouts of ridiculous fangirling. ugh the adorbs.
I'm crying so bad. The line from the fault in our stars. I fell in love the way you fall asleep, slowly and then all at once. GAWD
