  • Piranhas are well known fish because people believe they're something they're not. Piranhas are from South America and live in flowing rivers and streams as well as lakes and flooded forests. Here they're form groups not for hunting but for safety. Piranhas are preyed upon by other, larger fish. Piranhas themselves are opportunistic eaters. They have some amazing teeth that look kind of like shark teeth but don't work in the same way.
Scientific Name: part of the Serrasalmidae family
    Range: South America
Size: 1 foot (30.5cm) on average
Diet: smaller fish, crustaceans, insects, frogs, seeds, fruits, etc.
    Lifespan: up to 8 years

Thanks for an eye-opening video. Interestingly, Theodore Roosevelt pushed the idea that animals in general were dangerous and dumb. Probably b/c he was so heavily into trophy hunting.

Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah it's too bad for the animals that get misrepresented.

@@AnimalFactFiles Yep. For YEARS. Saying animals don't think/feel and are "ferocious" etc., makes it morally OK to do factory farming and cruel lab experiments. Channels like yours do a lot to help stop animal cruelty. Thanks!! (Subbed) 😃❤🐾🐾

I totally agree! I find myself often giving fish that pouty piranha lip when I draw them (even when they aren't piranhas!).

In 1976, a packed coach bus crashed into the Amazon River with 39 people trapped and died from drowning as a result of not being able to free themselves from the bus. But some of the bodies showed signs of the individual being attacked while they were still alive. There were clear indications that piranhas indeed mutilated the bodies by the time the bus was pulled from the river. But yes, they aren’t really vicious by nature; opportunistic feeders, but still very harmless 99% of the time. 😁

Excellent. I have gone swimming in a lake with piranha (I asked the guide to go first .... hahaha) and have had piranha for dinner.

Thanks! I didn’t know much about Piranhas... I imagined they were bigger, yes, the name is scary, much more than the fish itself...cool facts about their teeth! 👍👍

This video is misleading, a pack of piranhas can take you down easily. This year at least 4 died by Piranhas attack at Paraguay River. We dont die here in amazon because we respect the river and we avoid piranha’s.
