Excellent work, I have always found that, when casting in wood, it's can be a advantageous to apply a couple of coats of undiluted sanding sealer to the mold. I have suffered resin bleed in the past staining the wood. This does effect future dyes and staining if required. In this case it didn't matter; just thought you might like to know. Nice piece and skilled work.
Hi Frederick, I do this when doing bowl inlays but I know the walls would be thick enough for nothing to come through. Thanks for pointing it out though :)
I'm not sure I'd want it looking at me, but I love it. It'd be great for putting in the window to ward off the 'evil eye'. You made turning the sphere look easy, and that spalted wood is a dream. I wonder if a small security camera would fit in 😅
Mike I'm not a person into resins. But that eye ball is the coolest thing I have ever seen whit it. Like always. Your videos are very enjoyable. Thank you for sharing
I liked that you took the arduous time and care to do the most important part......the preparation. This is a unique project that really turned out well. You do nice work, Mike.
One of your older videos Mike but I'm slowly catching up with them in between getting my own wee workshop sorted & set up ( it is getting there ! ). Really cool project this one. Nothing more needs to be said 👍
First saw your gear knob, couldn't leave without seeing the eyeball! Very cool turning, so much character. Really like how they are separate pieces so the eyeball can be moved around. Very nice work, thanks for sharing!
Her name should be Iona! I love how you got a bit of the darker ring around the iris with your color mixing technique. I'd go even more dramatic next time!
Just discovered your work on TH-cam and have been glued to the content. You have inspired me to the point where I’m toying with buying a lathe having last turned anything at school some 50 years ago. 👍
@@Strebor1937 Wow thanks so much, if It's any help, I turned at school and did nothing till my wife bought me a lathe just under three years ago. Have a go, it really is great fun 😀
It would be fun to actually hollow out the eyeball from the bottom and imbed a small surveillance camera positioned with the lens centered at the pupil......be perfect for an office shelf.@@MikeHolton
What a neat project! You did an amazing job on the iris. Whatever happened to this piece? The wood is really lovely, too. It's fun to see how you have honed the editing over the months since you've been doing this 😊
@@MikeHolton I have been turning for a little over a year, but have never worked with resin. I may need to give this one a try, I will look in to resin a little more before committing time and resources. I have avoided resin so far due to cost and the mess factor. You make it look easy.
@@Jim777ist thanks, it's not too hard but you do need speed and sharp tools to stop it from chipping. Do your research carefully on the resin as they are all nor equal. Good luck and let me know how you get on.
I always wondered how they made croquet balls. Now I know. Bit macabre this one. Did you ever make a pair? because I guess that would be the ultimate challenge of colour matching and shaping etc. More importantly did you find a customer for it? Did it ever get a name? As a piece of art and a demonstration of bringing a really tough concept to life (now you have me at it) this was truly splendiferous. When you make another one you could include a teeny webcam inside and a display underneath and people could use it on the hallway table to floss their teeth or check their lippy on the way out?
Haha thanks, I have made a few more since and am intending to make another with a camera inside. It found a new owner about 5 hours after the video was released not sure if it's been given a name though 😂
So cool! Love it Mike. Was thinking a thin layer of clear resin over the colours to more closely resemble an eye? The colours are perfect though. Well done. I think I would be a bit freaked out with a pair of them 👀 "looking" at me though, hahaha 😂 As always, thanks for sharing 🙂
Very interesting. You could set it inside a triangle and played "I'm Illuminati' or something. LOL! You could also make a Halloween set of billiard balls like that.

Fascinating watch Mike, a rewarding little project 😊
