Food Forest: Growing a nut forest/orchard at "BOAT IN THE FOREST - harbour for radical nomads"

- Etta Säfve and Jona Elfdahl are growers, artists and teachers in permaculture. Over the past twelve years, they have been building an edible landscape, a 3 hectares forest garden at their homestead in Gärsnäs, Skåne, Sweden. This is one of the first nut orchards/forests in Sweden, including walnut, sweet chestnut, hazel, almond and other nut species in a big mix, with a lot of different varieties of each tree. In forest gardens across Sweden, exploratory work is underway into how we can eat from and at the same time contribute to living ecosystems including nuts, fruits, berries and perennial vegetables, all poised to replace the more resource demanding annual equivalents; "Those of us writing books about this right now, and those of us who teach about it, we’re just beginners. But the idea that we could eat our food from living, perennial ecosystems, which interlace a diversity of plants and fungal systems, is an amazing thought that was once obvious to humanity. Even though we have not previously recognized what happened before as farming. All over the world, you once grew food in a way where you were part of nature, part of the ecosystem. Lived on it but also contributed to it. And now we are at the very beginning of and examining those systems."
Together, Etta and Jona are pushing boundaries both in the field of arts and in the food revolution. With the cultural-platform "Gylleboverket" (gylleboverket.se/) they arrange an appreciated annual certification course in permaculture in cooperation with Kosters Trädgårdar. In their art they use the concepts of permaculture design, deep ecology and land-based resilience. Permaculture is a practical tool-kit to form sustainable human settlements grounded in an understanding of the ecological circumstances. It is also an ethic where humans are parts of ecosystems and are urged to act with care for the soil, the human and non-human beings.

Etta Säfve och Jona Elfdahl är odlare, konstnärer och lärare i permakultur. Sedan 12 år tillbaka bygger de upp ett ätbart landskap, en skogsträdgård, på sin gård i Gärsnäs, Skåne. Här anlägger de en av Sveriges första nötskogar med 3 hektar av valnöt, äkta kastanj, hassel, mandel mm. I svenska skogsträdgårdar pågår ett utforskande arbete i hur vi kan äta ur och samtidigt bidra till levande ekosystem med nötter, frukt, bär och perenna grönsaker, som i stor utsträckning skulle kunna ersätta mer resurskrävande och mindre tåliga ettårsväxter; "De som skriver böcker om det här, vi som lär ut om det här, är bara nybörjare, men tanken på att vi skulle kunna äta vår mat från levande, perenna ekosystem, som har samarbetet med mångfalden och svamp systemen, det är en fantastisk tanke som en gång var självklar för mänskligheten. Även om vi inte har känt igen det som skedde innan, som odling. "Över hela världen så odlade man en gång på ett sätt där man var en del av naturen, en del av ekosystemet. Levde av det men bidrog också till det. Och de systemen är vi nu alldeles i början av och undersöker." Tillsammans vidgar Etta och Jona gränserna både inom konsten och inom matrevolutionen. Med kulturplattformen Gylleboverket arrangerar de en uppskattad årlig certifieringskurs i permakultur, i samarbete med Kosters Trädgårdar. Som konstnärer använder Etta och Jona permakulturdesign, med avstamp i djupekologi och frågor kring social och landbaserad resiliens. Permakultur är ett praktiskt redskap för att forma mänskliga hållbara bosättningar utifrån grundläggande ekologisk förståelse. Det är också en vägledning utifrån en etik där människan är en del i ekosystemet och agerar utifrån omsorg om jord, människa och det mer än mänskliga. The passion for the rebuilding of forest soil and creating a future from it is purely inspirational from this wonderful couple. It's now clear to me ( an ex industrial farmer) that forest gardening and farming are our only hope as a species to redress the massive imbalances that land clearing agriculture has created.
