  • MOL’s polyol complex exceeded 70% overall completion, biggest equipments arrived despite pandemic-related logistics challenges
The Polyol Complex will be the most advanced chemical plant in Central and Eastern Europe. The EUR 1.2 billion project is the MOL Group’s largest and most complex organic investment project.
The production of key equipment requires special know-how and competence that few manufacturers have in the world, and the number of potential partners is also severely limited by considerations regarding the protection of the technology.
It took years of logistics planning and required the coordinated use of special heavy haulage equipment to transport the nearly 100 items, each weighing hundreds of tons, from across the ocean and from several locations in Europe to Tiszaújváros in time.
Some of the oversized cargoes were transported to Hungary from Belgium and Italy. Items that could be transported by road were transloaded to heavy haulage trailers at the Gönyű and Budapest ports, and it took the special convoys several days to get them to Tiszaújváros.
The parts from Italy came from the Black Sea, through the port of Constanța. From there, they were taken on the river Danube and the river Tisza to the Tiszaújváros transshipment point.
The part of the plant that will produce the polyol final product was first built in Thailand, then, like a giant Lego set, it was taken apart. The modules were transported halfway across the globe by ship, which took 4 months, and were assembled again in Tiszaújváros.
The unloading of the cargo transported by water posed another challenge to the experts.
A temporary port needed to be built, where the transshipment of the items, several of which weighed hundreds of tons, required a tremendously powerful crawler crane. Then they were transported by two huge special transport vehicles.
Over the course of 5 months, nearly 100 heavyweight shipments arrived in Tiszaújváros safe from several parts of the world.
Despite the low water levels, borders closed because of the pandemic, the complexity of the task, the logistics was successfully completed, and the polyol complex exceeded 70% overall completion.
Polyol complex in Tiszaújváros is by far MOL’s largest investment in its Downstream business and a significant milestone to become the leading petrochemical company of the CEE region. It’s part of MOL’s Enter Tomorrow 2030 Strategy that aims to diversify away from motor fuels and increase the refinery yield dedicated to petrochemicals feedstock and to extend the petrochemical value chain towards the growing semi-commodity market.
Polyol is one of the most valuable plastic products in the market, used by industries ranging from construction to textile manufacturing. It is increasingly used for insulation, reducing the energy consumption of buildings. When used in vehicles, it also reduces fuel consumption due to its light weight.

I managed safety and traffic management on that project... an amazing faciltynonve completed, but building was no easy task, I for sure had my work cut out for me but well worth the efforts!
