It is only sexist when it can be considered discrimanatory. Such as, She looks good for her age but....I don't think she should have the part because we want someone younger. Sharon Stone made some remarks about the age issue in Hollywood a couple of weeks ago. She said that when a producer or a director has a part for a woman in her 50s or 60s, they all go to Meryl Streep. And they forget that we have so many amazing actresses out there who can play these parts beautifully.
I’m 60 (from Ohio), so I rarely watch movies unless there are older women in them. I see these young people who couldn’t possibly have the experience their characters are to have…. Makes the film seem so fake and flat. I watch European films that are more realistic. I saw a movie with Pierce Brosnan from a few year’s ago, with an older woman and my friends and I loved it. Realistic and uplifting….name “Love is All You Need.” Hollywood, you are disrespecting women and you are losing money with this market. Wake up!!! Female actresses unite and produce and make more of these movies.
Geena Davis rose up to the top in the early 1990’s and was making one great film after another. I was a huge fan, then one day years passed and I was wondering where is Geena Davis? I’ve brought her name up to friends in recent years and they’ll comment, “I loved her! Whatever happen to her?” Apparently Hollywood’s ageist clan happened. If they’d offer a handful of scripts over the last ten years people would go to see it. Loved her in The Long Kiss Goodnight, Angie, Hero, Earth Girls are Easy, Beetlejuice and of course the highly acclaimed Thelma and Louise, A League of Their Own and The Accidental Tourist. These are all films I recall from memory loving her in. I have no doubt that if the industry cast her in the right role that she’d skyrocket back to the top and nab every award nomination out of it. There have been many actresses over 40 that disappeared or stopped being cast in, then out of nowhere they land the role of a lifetime that puts them back on the map.
Her activist work for actors and opportunities in the field will be just as important as the work she has been a part of as an actress. #CBSThisMorning
One of my favorite actresses. The most common mistake the industry makes, is thinking women over 50 have less to offer than their younger colleagues. Sure, youth sells, but Baby Boomers are the 2nd largest generation still, and watch as many streaming services, etc as everyone else. Do you really think mature, female consumers can relate more to watching women in their 20's, or women closer to their own age...just a thought..
They need actresses that are now the "it" girls or 50 and younger to assist in this charge...we can't wait until actresses wait to be of a certain age to start the charge... Let all women of all ages join this cause to make the biggest impact!

"The Long Kiss" is up there, but Davis was/became Muriel in "Tourist". A great story, a superb cast, & she still really stood out. Bravo to her for her work in trying to aciheve equality for women in film.

Geena Davis is an excellent and amazing actress and beautiful as well. When 60 or 70 year old women can star in and carry a movie that makes hundreds of millions of dollars like the rest of them ...then they will be hired like crazy. Clint Eastwood can still make a movie and bring in tons viewers and money. They're not going to hire a 70 or 80 year old woman for the kind of money she will have to have and lose money ...it's simple arithmetic it has nothing to do with her age. It has to do with who goes to the movies and that's mostly younger clientele.

Why would change come in Hollywood when it hasn't in real life? Nothing she complains about is unknown in daily life, and women are the first to notice a female actor's age or weight. Nothing has changed when you drill down into it.
I have an idea about diversity….it seems like there are a lack of parts for “next generation women” because there is a lack of decent inspiring literature in the same field. Hollywood is full of brilliant artists with copious ideas. Perhaps Ms. Davis’ foundation could sponsor an “idea fest” where her group can award small prizes to good 2-3 pages story ideas inclusive of the “next generation woman.” Should someone be inspired by that idea to turn it into a movie script, the idea person would be financially recognized, etc. i can think of 20 or more good stories involving meaningful roles for women of all ages but I don’t have a clue how to write a script. Script writers haven’t come up with enough of their own ideas to make an impact…so, perhaps, the “idea machinery” of Hollywood might need some lighter fluid in the form of story ideas by people who don’t know how to turn that into a script. I know many artists start production companies and buy up “book rights” but refocusing the system into encouraging the creative juices in the first place might be the kickstart the industry needs to find its next batch of films.
....some individuals dont "get it" that social tastes change, people age out, younger people dont want to see old people making out, I dont want to see old people making out. And i dont have to feel guilty for saying it, because its true. Life changes, Life isnt fair that we each age out after time. I luv people, and all facets of society, but i dont want/enjoy seeing that in film. Rather than baulk and try to change the realities (not just self interpretations of what is fair), we need to accept reality, and not try to put the square peg in the round hole of life.
I get what you're saying! But older people watch tv too, so I'm pretty sure at least some like to see themselves represented more often. Also the fact that there are more roles and jobs available for older male actors than women actresses could lead to a wealth gap or something
@@kaylam.6264 ..agreed. Thing is, some individuals are defiant to accept how society as a whole through aging/time, processes a "living thing" as it ages....and, eventually ages out. Seeing two 25 year olds in love ( or "thirsty"), and, understanding the related physical involvement, is inspiring , representing what life is all about in a general way in our physical prime . To see the same of very mature, much older humans, is different... like watching Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore do their "Clay pottery scene" from Ghost at 30, then, at 75. The same scene affects people differently with different age representations. Im in my 60's, and understand totally. Thing is, do we wanna watch Demi/Patrick at 75.... or at 30????? Older humans especially those ( celebrities) who received an incredible amount of attention when younger, need to make reasonable adjustments as they age out in the business. Some character/role choices made by some aging out actors to "stay relative" are worse than the alternative of having a great career in their younger years of being relevant, and letting that represent their life. Women will always bear the Achilles heel of child bearing and its responsibilities. To ignore that primal structure wiring will create problems. ... or has ?
That’s not entirely true. There have been projects that did exceptionally well such as “Something’s Gotta Give” with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton about two 60 something year olds falling in love. And yeah they do it in the film. It still grossed over 265 million and that’s not including rentals and dvd and streaming sales. So your theory is limited to what you personally don’t want to see, but not necessarily based on fact. The box office says otherwise with many of these films doing well with older actors acting as the lead. As someone in my twenties, I’ve enjoyed a good film regardless of the age of the actor. I’m not that limited where I can only watch hard body young people going at it in bed. I have a broader range than that and apparently so do many others.
@@beachstreet101 ....Thats ONE example of a minority. Do most Hollywood female vets want to "go down" w/a movie like "Queen Bees" or "Grandma's boy"? (debate as they might in a chat room). There is a "market" for anything (almost), thing is... do entertainers want to "go there" to be relevant ? I think thats the question here. Gena Davis is trying to live what she enjoys, and possibly, to stay employed. Without artificially creating (or desperately searching) for valid substance in how society deals with aging in the entertainment industry, history has pretty much presented its outline. We all can try to dismiss the reality, but is it worth the uphill fight? Im all for "causes", and support some who "fight" for those causes that have incredible energy to "invest" to challenge the norm. Whats "right" for Geena, doest mean it fits, or is mainstream correct, for everyone else.. or society in general.
Here is what I will do. No movies until Geena Davis gets casts a few times. I'll just call it a positive boycott. She is stunning so cast her Hollywood!

There needs to be more screenplays written that feature older women. That's the real problem.

When 60 or 70 year old women can star in and carry a movie that makes hundreds of millions of dollars like the rest of them ...then they will be hired like crazy.
Clint Eastwood can still make a movie and bring in tons viewers and money.
They're not going to hire a 70 or 80 year old woman for the kind of money she will have to have and lose money ...it's simple arithmetic it has nothing to do with her age.
It has to do with who goes to the movies and that's mostly younger clientele.

i totally forgot about Tootsie. You could practically see Dustin Hoffman struggling to keep it together in their scene. She's amazing.
Geena Davis & Dustin Hoffman would reunite years later in the film Hero!! She played a reporter who was rescued in a burning plane that crashed by Hoffman's character, Bernard La Plante. The film also starred Andy Garcia who played John Blubber, the homeless man who would take credit for La Plante's act of heroism.

Geena is very fresh and healthy looking for her age, you'd wonder is there a secret that she has for staying so young looking for someone in her mid 60's
Why would change come in Hollywood when it hasn't in real life? Nothing she complains about is unknown in daily life, and women are the first to notice a female actor's age or weight. Nothing has changed when you drill down into it.
I have an idea about diversity….it seems like there are a lack of parts for “next generation women” because there is a lack of decent inspiring literature in the same field. Hollywood is full of brilliant artists with copious ideas. Perhaps Ms. Davis’ foundation could sponsor an “idea fest” where her group can award small prizes to good 2-3 pages story ideas inclusive of the “next generation woman.” Should someone be inspired by that idea to turn it into a movie script, the idea person would be financially recognized, etc. i can think of 20 or more good stories involving meaningful roles for women of all ages but I don’t have a clue how to write a script. Script writers haven’t come up with enough of their own ideas to make an impact…so, perhaps, the “idea machinery” of Hollywood might need some lighter fluid in the form of story ideas by people who don’t know how to turn that into a script. I know many artists start production companies and buy up “book rights” but refocusing the system into encouraging the creative juices in the first place might be the kickstart the industry needs to find its next batch of films.

....some individuals dont "get it" that social tastes change, people age out, younger people dont want to see old people making out, I dont want to see old people making out. And i dont have to feel guilty for saying it, because its true. Life changes, Life isnt fair that we each age out after time. I luv people, and all facets of society, but i dont want/enjoy seeing that in film. Rather than baulk and try to change the realities (not just self interpretations of what is fair), we need to accept reality, and not try to put the square peg in the round hole of life.
I get what you're saying! But older people watch tv too, so I'm pretty sure at least some like to see themselves represented more often. Also the fact that there are more roles and jobs available for older male actors than women actresses could lead to a wealth gap or something
@@kaylam.6264 ..agreed. Thing is, some individuals are defiant to accept how society as a whole through aging/time, processes a "living thing" as it ages....and, eventually ages out. Seeing two 25 year olds in love ( or "thirsty"), and, understanding the related physical involvement, is inspiring , representing what life is all about in a general way in our physical prime . To see the same of very mature, much older humans, is different... like watching Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore do their "Clay pottery scene" from Ghost at 30, then, at 75. The same scene affects people differently with different age representations. Im in my 60's, and understand totally. Thing is, do we wanna watch Demi/Patrick at 75.... or at 30????? Older humans especially those ( celebrities) who received an incredible amount of attention when younger, need to make reasonable adjustments as they age out in the business. Some character/role choices made by some aging out actors to "stay relative" are worse than the alternative of having a great career in their younger years of being relevant, and letting that represent their life. Women will always bear the Achilles heel of child bearing and its responsibilities. To ignore that primal structure wiring will create problems. ... or has ?
That’s not entirely true. There have been projects that did exceptionally well such as “Something’s Gotta Give” with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton about two 60 something year olds falling in love. And yeah they do it in the film. It still grossed over 265 million and that’s not including rentals and dvd and streaming sales. So your theory is limited to what you personally don’t want to see, but not necessarily based on fact. The box office says otherwise with many of these films doing well with older actors acting as the lead. As someone in my twenties, I’ve enjoyed a good film regardless of the age of the actor. I’m not that limited where I can only watch hard body young people going at it in bed. I have a broader range than that and apparently so do many others.
@@beachstreet101 ....Thats ONE example of a minority. Do most Hollywood female vets want to "go down" w/a movie like "Queen Bees" or "Grandma's boy"? (debate as they might in a chat room). There is a "market" for anything (almost), thing is... do entertainers want to "go there" to be relevant ? I think thats the question here. Gena Davis is trying to live what she enjoys, and possibly, to stay employed. Without artificially creating (or desperately searching) for valid substance in how society deals with aging in the entertainment industry, history has pretty much presented its outline. We all can try to dismiss the reality, but is it worth the uphill fight? Im all for "causes", and support some who "fight" for those causes that have incredible energy to "invest" to challenge the norm. Whats "right" for Geena, doest mean it fits, or is mainstream correct, for everyone else.. or society in general.
Here is what I will do. No movies until Geena Davis gets casts a few times. I'll just call it a positive boycott. She is stunning so cast her Hollywood!
