      Remember the days when the power went out, we all knew what happened? Now with all the internet and all the social media, no one knows shit. Dumbing down seems to be the most acceptable excuse for brain dead.. Dad never let us know we were gonna be invaded by Morons. Would’ve been nice to get a heads up …

  • @hafeexius
    @hafeexius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    In India we used to have those rechargeable ones with a switch years ago but the market's since moved on to automatic bulbs. Once the power goes out, they automatically switch to battery backup for up to 8 hours. You really appreciate those lights in the bathroom when the power goes out and you're not fumbling in the dark 🙈

    • @specialopsdave
      @specialopsdave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      How do they know the difference between when the light switch is off, or if the power is out?

    • @hafeexius
      @hafeexius 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@specialopsdave
      1. With the mains on and the switch on, the bulb works normally and also charges the battery.
      2. With the switch on and there's a blackout, the bulb immediately switches to battery backup but there's a slight reduction in light output.
      3. With the switch in the off position, whether there's a blackout or not, the bulb stays off.
      The wall switch completes or breaks the circuit. If you take the bulb, touch the base and the ground with your fingers (dry skin won't work because it's not conductive) , it completes the circuit and the bulb switches on via battery backup. Nice magic trick to mess with people who don't know about the bulb 😁

    • @specialopsdave
      @specialopsdave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@hafeexius But the circuit is _not_ completed by the switch, or else the battery would be backfeeding into the grid, it must detect the connection to a dead grid somehow.

    • @dickJohnsonpeter
      @dickJohnsonpeter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hafeexius I don't get that explanation because if there's there's a blackout there's zero current to the bulb. If you turn the switch off there's zero current going to the bulb, sho how would it know the difference? Unless it is able to detect some current through the neutral or something when the switch is off that wouldn't be there when there is no power going to your house at all like the case of a blackout. I'm not an electrician so that's just a total guess I'm making.

      Keep in mind that even lower wattage ones will do the trick just the same, dont necessarily have to get a high wattage one for it to do what you need it to. I use the DAKASON LED Garage Light 60W Adjustable LED (out of stock atm) for my Attic and its still 100x better than a normal LED Bulb.

    Got like 9 of the E-Bulbs that were at Walmart a few months ago.. I didnt fully understand how they worked though until the power went out.. I figured the light would automatically turn on when the power goes out, but for it to turn on, the light switch has to be already on or turned on manually for the bulb to light up (it can tell the difference). They come with a socket adapter with a push switch so you can use them as a portable light as well.
    The Deformable lights definitely come in handy in attics and basements, but you dont need the $30+ all metal ones (Spoiler: They can still burn out because of heat even with the huge metal heatsinks), $14 or so one on Amazon does the trick just fine without a possible fire hazard.

    I do have the battery backup bulb but my all time favorite has to be Philips sceneswitch which changes from 100% to 40% to 10% power simply by flicking the switch off and on again.
    Ideal for most situations and comes on at the last used setting.
    I can read at night and then dim it down so it doesn't blind me when I need to get up in the middle of the night.

    Nice quick little video! Got me thinking.. You should do a video and show us the best motion sensor plug-in style lightbulb. Similar to those ones, in that they just plug-in, rather then the hard-wired flood lights. I'm having a heck of a time finding some for my garage. Its tricky trying to carry the baby in the car-seat out to the garage/car and having to hit the light switches. The ones i've found just don't have the range (20-30ft?) to sense me without having to try and do a dance to get them activated! haha Thanks again for your content!

    • @mike.briney
      @mike.briney 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd love to even have those "deformable bulbs" in the garage but wish they were motion activated, or even if they featured a separate base that they plugged into that had PIR motion sensors in them? hmmm...

    I love them all. By the way, back about 15+ years there was a bulb that had a built in timer in the base. It screws and looks like any light bulb, but it will power off after a specific period. Very useful when you forget to turn off the light in a bathroom or closet. I still have one of the few I bought and still works great. I wish they have them now

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you. If the power goes out you do need to go to the bulb to switch it to on. It automatically charges without ever thinking about but you must manually turn it on when needed, I think they did it that way so that it wouldnt use up the power if you didn't need it. So if you came home from work to a dark house yo would get the full 5 hour backup runtime from it when you turn it on.

    PSA: Did you know that most LED bulb are NOT made to be enclosed? If your LED bulbs don't last, it's probably because you purchase bulbs made to be in open space, and use them in enclosed area which makes them heat up and cook the internal circuit. Make sure to always buy bulbs made for enclosed spaces.

      True although LEDs have gotten better lately but that’s even more true for CFL bulbs!

    2nd one would be more helpful if it would turn itself on when there is no energy anymore because if it's dark af I probably will not find my lamp or even be able to reach it.

    3:03 "These are so much better than putting in a higher wattage bulb"
    Then uses a 150 watt LED lamp. 🤣

    Hmm, the paddle bulbs do not last. I bought two different brands. One lost a paddle after 3 months in the garage after normal use. The other one was in my cellar and that on blew a panel after 31 days just past the warranty. Be interesting if you have any issues 😉😎😷

    I have always seen those last bulbs advertised as directional bulbs not deformable. Must be the different countries.

    That battery backup bulb could be modified to function like the bulb Uncle Fester used to "power" by putting in his mouth on The Addams Family.

    LEDs don't last even close to what they are promoted.. they are wired in series and if one fails then it's broken. that's why in led back light TV probably the most broken part are LEDs..

      I have LED bulbs from the early early days, even some can lights that had them built in that are now 7 years old and going strong, used constantly. Yet some bought just a couple of years ago have already failed. Outdoor ones are a disaster if you get the wrong brand. You are 100% right about the TVs too. They CAN last if these companies want them too

    The deformable would be useful in attics and garages. The other two are expensive gimmicks.
