Devito's version: "So we auditioned a bunch of guys, then my secretary phoned all their agents with the standard "He was great, we've put him on the short list - it's between him and another guy" bullshit story we tell everyone until a contract gets signed by our first choice... honestly, you should have seen the Blag Flag guy. What a ham! he trashed the room while putting on a display of the worst over-acting I have ever seen in my life."
Honestly, he is an actor though. I'm not saying he's the best Shakespearian method actor in the world or whatever but he has the ability to forget about his reality and create a new reality and become part of it and that's all acting really is. Even when he came out and said "Break a leg. I did." he was acting. I'm sure he didn't feel naturally antagonistic toward them. He briefly just created a new reality for the sake of humor or to get a rise out of someone. Not everyone can do that. Not everyone can make their mindset vastly different easily and quickly.
Danny's a brilliant maniac, with an excellent taste in music (Henry Rollins, Mike Patton etc.) I could see him personally asking Henry to read for it, and sitting there with a gleeful smile while everyone else cowers at Henry going apeshit.
I loved Henry in Johnny Mnemonic. "THIS CAUSES IT! THIS CAUSES IT! Technological overload! But we still have all this SHIT!...because we can't live without it."
He says he's not a good actor, but he voices the main antagonist in season 3 (and, in spirit, the entire series) of Legend of Korra, the spin-off sequel to Last Airbender. That same character is my favorite of the antagonists in that show.
"We've got a civic duty to protect apprehend or save them. We're basically standard issued street soldiers." loved that line, as the Flea's HIGHLY modified Bronco rolls end-over-end on the freeway!
i did chat with danny devito once, it was at an art gallery in west hollywood, i went there to see an afternoon of performance art which as it turned out was organized by Danny's daughter, so Danny was there, and also Rhea Perlman, Danny's wife (Carla on "Cheers".) It was exciting to meet him, and to be in the same room with her. He didn't mention Henry.
Liz R I think I probably figured that whoever watches this video might be interested in what Danny does, they might not have known he has a daughter who organizes afternoons of performance art.
+Greg Dahlen I thought Louie DePalma was performance art...? You know, from `Taxi'. Also, after *that* audition I'm surprised he didn't mention Henry Rollins, especially at a performance art show. "This guy totally destroyed my office, scared the 5h!t out of my assistant and the other actors waiting outside; it was great!"
One of my favorite lines is from Death to Smoochy. "Hey, sorry I'm late. I fell asleep at the bus station. Scuse me if I smell like piss. You know how it is."
Your agent was Able to get you the part of CAIN but this movie (He never die) was refreshing because every movie with Henry Rollins that i saw he plays a cop or a prison guard,The New Guy, Lost Highway, The Chase and probably other movie
He went in thinking being a jackass would hurt his chances... but that’s exactly what producers want is someone that’ll be willing to make an ass of themselves.
Henry is longtime journaler and writer too though. He even published a book called Get in the Van, which collects all of his tour diaries from when he was with Black Flag. So, he's bound to have all of these stories and memories documented.
First Henry learned to scream, then he transformed that screaming in to "singin" and now we get to enjoy Henry as he talks. I like Henry when he talks, I like to hear Henry references himself as "Henry", it's just so well mannered explosion we get to witness here it's making my eyes watery. Love you Henry o/
More than that, I would say. If you are interested, watch this. Especially the part about him not wanting kids and reasons why. th-cam.com/video/6cCKoFqsN9A/w-d-xo.html
I once sent a tweet to Danny Devito telling him I saw Death to Smoochy six times at the theater. He wrote back: "well, that's six more than the rest of the country" That movie absolutely bombed, but it is so damn good. It would've been next level crazy with Henry as Spinner
IDK I've never really seen him in anything but he is great in Con Man. My memory of Henry Rollins is always from Beavis & Butthead with whatever music video he had. Liar I think.
celebrities telling stories about meeting other celebrities is always insightful and humorous. I remember when I told Kathy Griffith about the time I met Jason Alexander on the set of a Richard Gere movie, we were discussing the same thing.
I want to hear how Henry landed his role in Johnny Nmemonic or however the fukk it is spelled. That is a performance and a film that raises so many questions.
But you did sir, You played it perfectly. Even when you faked getting put back through a plate glass window by Bobby Deniro while playing a bodyguard in a little movie titled "Heat" back in '95, you fuckin nailed it. Respect.
Hmm, wonder if Danny kept it to show people what true intensity looks like? (Could totally see him showing it to his co-stars at ASIP, they would definitely dig it).
Too bad Henry didn't get the part, as it may have saved the movie. And interesting that I believe Death To Smoochie was done before the doc Filth And The Fury about The Sex Pistols, which DeVito also helped produce. So I wonder if it was Henry that turned Danny onto punk rock and all that?
OK, so who looked up "death to smoochy boxer" right after because it was already in my search box suggestion after typing about 3 characters. What a shitty, unmemorable scene. Henry would have killed it. Maybe Danny was worried about Henry hurting Edward Norton or the rest of the cast. He didn't say who the other actors were waiting to audition, but I bet their stomachs tied in worse knots when they saw Henry Rollins walk in.
I would have loved to see henry rollins in a safari outfit banging a cowbell like crazy and dressed up in a rhino outfit. Too bad he scared the shit out of danny devito with his audition. 🤣
We need Danny Devito's version of this story.
@@emdiar6588 that "another guy" was Robin Williams. They made the movie.

He was playing his own on that movie... 😉
Excellent, excellent film. What a gem.
I read that the part was written for him.
@@michaelmyers8288 it is a wonderful movie.
Took me a while to find him actually speaking. That movie was the first time I saw him and he definitely nailed the silent scary too lol

And this is why I love Henry Rollins. He is 100% the epitome of "Fuck it,, LET'S DO THIS!".

Henry played in a very good movie in 2015 called He never died. If you missed it, you should watch it
