Simply exquisite! I am 66 years young and have finally brushed the dust off of my art supplies after 40 long years. I have been challenging myself to learn the wonderful art of watercolors and admire your work so very much. I have avidly hunted down every tutorial of yours that I can possibly find on UTube. You are such an inspiring and superbly talented artist as well as being the most incredible teacher. If I could wish for anything, I would wish that there were more of your videos that I could follow. Unfortunately, I am not in the financial position that I could attend any of your workshops. I did actually take the time to check them out and will keep them all on my bucket list. 😊👩🦳🖌️
this video was posted 8 years ago, so I was surprised to see a recent comment. I am 71 and retired and finally have time to learn watercolor. I love this style of semi-abstract landscapes. Good luck in your journey! If you haven't already done so, you might check out Liron Yanconsky and Matthew White, 2 youtubers I've learned a lot from.
Thank you Deborah. That was very kind of you to take the trouble to comment. I am planning for more TH-cam videos this year, the first coming hopefully within the next couple of weeks.
My pleasure Grahame, I can tell you that I have already found your newest postings and couldn't be happier that you are back!!! (PS: I always learn something more by watching your tutorials.....there are no shadows within shadows.... paint them in one wash.... lovely)
I agree, it's gorgeous. We are the same age Deborah - except that I only started a couple of years ago. I LOVE winter landscapes, probably because I grew up in Northern Ontario where snow arrived in October and left in May! I have the most luck with winter scenes - love the blues, greys, taupe, burnt sienna. Winter light is beautiful, too, especially late afternoon.
Without question, this is the most complete instruction I have seen on any video. The information that so many fail to include is all here, and the camera work is first rate. Thank you Grahame for this.
WOW! Graham, I love yourwatercolor instruction and painting style. The detail you provide about your color mixing, brush work, and capturing the feeling of the scene is the best I have seen after viewing many demonstrations! Thank you!
Grahame is a phenomenal artist! He inspires and educates with every video demonstration I want to purchase his instructional materials, too. Keep up the good work, sir
Again I loved this detailed and informative video tutorial. I felt the showing of the mixing of the colours in the palette really gave a good insight into colour mixing, and it was interesting to see what I felt was a similar tonal range developing across the work as a whole, giving a lovely balance to the final work. it was also interesting to read another comment about painting snow in different colours and this gave a vibrancy to the piece. Thank you for sharing.
you need some snow? we are getting approx. 20 cm tomorrow into Saturday. LOL everytime I watch this I learn something more. thank you for this truly instructional video. love your technique you make the paint come alive.
Kevin Barry Jan 19 2018 Excellent demonstration. Each step in the process clearly explained as it is done. Shows the beauty that can be achieved by a small number of colours and their variation by both hue and value throughout the painting. I found the creation of the small pond - laying down the reflections first and when they were dry, glazing over them to suggest the surface of the water. Thank you Grahame!
Super demonstration. Your accompanying commentary is first class. It's so helpful to hear you explain the how and why as you develop the painting. Many thanks. My usual medium is oil but you've given me the urge to get out my watercolours. Happy new year.
Thank you, it’s amazing how it comes together. I’m gearing up to ty my own winter landscape and this tutorial was extremely helpful. Your explanation of the sun low in the sky for warmth and the way the shadow needs to be continuous are great tips!
This is definitely my favorite demo you have done. I am looking forward to trying my spin on it. I probably will need to borrow that fancy brass box though haha!
As always, I enjoy your work and your clear instruction of what you are doing and why. I look forward to learning from you in your workshops this year.
Your Snow Painting Book is Out Now and I can't wait to get it ! Love your take and Logic on it. Ty for showing how to do Snow without tons of Blue as to me it always looks like the Snow has Melted and now it's a Puddle! Ty
great information given while you painted! I loved seeing how you mix also! really helped me understand how you mix and how you reuse and add to your colors! Thank you
Very instructive Grahame, love your colours, will try something like this for my Christmas cards, first of all I thought the figure was to be a Robin!! Thank you for the tuition.
Hermosa y muy completa demostración. Es muy valioso ver cómo mezclas los colores en la paleta.¡ Mis deseos de felicidad desde Buenos Aires ARGENTINA, para el 2015 que tenemos tan cerca.!
Thank you so much for this demonstration, I've never colored snow before. I knew that snow isn't just white but didn't quite know how to color it. This helped me a lot thanks.
I think I know what it is it's the angle of the paper. I rewatched the last three I had seen and I noticed that your paper is on your architect table at an angle. I can follow it knowing I have to put my paper at the same angle when I paint with you. it confused me because my brain was not registering the table as being tilted up. I enjoy watching you because your good at teaching watercolour paintings. thank you for having this program
Hi Grahame, just came across your site today. Great tutorials thank you very much, look forward to more in the coming year. All the best to you for 2015. Ian
Wonderful scene. Beautiful painting. Do you squeeze fresh paint onto your palette for each painting or just spray the dried paints already in the palette? Thank you.
Thank you Antonio. I use my palette so often that I do not usually need to spray them. I just keep squeezing fresh paint. Eventually some of each paint well does harden so every 18 months or so I scrape it out and start again with fresh paint.
Mostly Winsor and Newton Byron and all are artists quality but really the vibrancy of watercolour is more about putting the paint on simply and really wet. All of the major manufacturers make really good paint.
Graheme, I am new to your chanel and am a very timid beginner with watercolour. Thank you for identifying the watercolours used and showing how much water is needed for mixing and laying the pigments. Would you mind letting me know the name of the beautiful background guitar music to this demonstration. Thankyou for a totaly stressfree, relaxing and encouraging experience. 😊
Thank you Irene. Unfortunately I'm not sure what the music actually is. I use what is known as licenced music in my videos to avoid copyright and these tend not to bcome with very much information. I think it is either Bach or based on Bach and I have found something similar on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/C_GW8XnEyY0/w-d-xo.html
I was soo pleased to see this painting Come up again. I used to watch it lots. Can you tell me what the first brush is called that you Use please. I will keep practising Thank you
Kedves Mester! Nagyon tetszik a videó.A kép egy remekmű.Örülök,hogy láthattam. Köszönöm. Sikerekben gazdag Boldog Újévet kívánok és hozzá jó egészséget.Üdvözlettel Juli
Hi Kelly. I used a cellulose paper, Bockingford from St. Cuthbert's Mill in England. I use it because I like the surface and the paint stays quite bright on it. It is also easy to lift paint off but this is more to do with the way the paper is made rather than what it is made from.
Thank you very much for your answer, it is of great help to me as I seem to struggle a bit with the different types of paper according to the effects wanted, but that is probably a problem for most beginners! Anyway I hope to be learning quite a few things working along with your videos........
I guess what I mean is from a front view that is capable of seeing the full canvas as if it were in front of the viewer. we see it from the top looking down on it and its hard to see what you are putting on the canvas and make sense of it. look at. Bob ross and Donna Dewberry. they go from an angle or straight up close view. I love what you are doing its really beautiful art work.
Where can I get that palette, case and paint, that you are using in this video? Also, does it make a difference that your painting at an angle? Thank you for the demonstration on the snow. That helps me to figure out how to make it look like snow in water color. Easy to do in Acrylics, not so easy in water color. 2
Hi. The palette is a Craig Young palette. A good round up of similar palettes can be found at channeling-winslow-homer.com/2013/05/02/brass-watercolor-palettes-3-craftsmen-now-making-them/ . Paint is mostly Winsor and Newton and finally I do believe that it is necessary to paint at an angle. Watercolour will always flow and at least at an angle it flows down!
Thank you Janice. I used a Jacksons squirrel mop for the sky. Manufacturers size their mops in different ways but I think this is a size 14 or 15 which is the diameter of the brush where it meets the ferrule. (The brush is now quite old and the size has worn off!)
Thx for doing all of your videos. I appreciate the hard work and free sharing of tips and info! Can you give the name/brand of the palette? Very cool model! Thx.
Thanks Chris. Glad you enjoyed it. My palette is made by Craig Young but other people make similar palettes. a very good round up of what is available can be found here channeling-winslow-homer.com/2013/05/02/brass-watercolor-palettes-3-craftsmen-now-making-them/
Thank you Beverly. My palette is made by Craig Young but other people make similar palettes. a very good round up of what is available can be found here channeling-winslow-homer.com/2013/05/02/brass-watercolor-palettes-3-craftsmen-now-making-them/ The John Hurtley palette (Little Brass Box Company) is better made, and less expensive (but still costs a lot!)
i noticed that you cross contaminate colors on the palette. how do you keep your colors from getting muddy on your palette after you finish a painting?

Thank you, Donna, I do follow both Liron and Matthew and learn quite a bit. But there is no doubt in my mind that Grahame is the very best!

Many people teach but there are few real teachers. It’s a true gift and you certainly have it.
Without question, this is the most complete instruction I have seen on any video. The information that so many fail to include is all here, and the camera work is first rate.
Thank you Grahame for this.
That's very kind of you to comment Neil. It is much appreciated.

Thank you so much Nancy. Your kind comments are very much appreciated.
Thank you for this demo and for showing so many techniques including mixing the paint, colors, brush sizes, strokes....all very helpful!
Captivating Grahame, thank you so much. My husband and I watched in awe as this stunning watercolour came to life.
Grahame is a phenomenal artist! He inspires and educates with every video demonstration
I want to purchase his instructional materials, too. Keep up the good work, sir
Love your work and watching you get the much needed effects to make it look more realistic. Thank you.
Thank you Grahame. I so appreciate your taking the time to show us this demo. So many lessons in this one, so beautiful!
Thanks for posting these tutorials. They are very clear to understand and give great points for instruction. I enjoy the paintings you make.

Hi Beryl. The first brush is a squirrel mop. Squirrel hair is very soft and holds a huge amount of paint.
