The lyrics are actually referencing his early rejection by music labels and managers. Essentially wanting him to conform to societal norms and be like everyone else. So he decides to be himself and different to remain happy (like Freddie Mercury), rather then end up sad and unfulfilled like Grace Kelly.
    Mika’s an excellent songwriter.

I love Mika, he's such an interesting and charismatic man. He has done loads of great songs; Love Today and Big Girl You Are Beautiful to name only two. He was one of the judges on the French version of the Voice and he speaks several languages fluently.

Mika is seriously underrated, he is so amazing live. Underwater is my absolute fave, you've got Golden, Love today etc.
If I remember correctly grace Kelly was written about record companies. They wanted him to be a certain way and this is basically his f you.

I totally get Freddie Mercury vibes from him! The voice that the little girl is lip-syncing is Grace Kelly in one/or many lines of her movies. What a voice! Thanks for this.

I know he really likes Freddie Mercury and they're kinda doing a Freddie pose with their arms up whenever he sings the name so I've always assumed it's Freddie Mercury he's referring to. He has another song called Last Party which is actualled inspired by Freddie and how he might have thought when he found out he had AIDS. You should def check that one out aswell. Another really good Mika song is Good Guys.

Such a fun song, he has some amazing songs. Grace Kelly was beautiful, tragically died in a car accident in 1982. Her daughter Princess Stephanie of Monaco was with her and survived.

Mika's the first artist I sort of discovered on my own when I was 15 and starting to develop my musical taste. I was watching MTV for whatever reason and Grace Kelly came on and I remembered the song from when it came out, cuz it was everywhere, so I started to check out his discography and listened to his first two albums back to back, and absolutely loved both of them to bits. Grace Kelly and Relax, Take It Easy are probably the best known songs from his debut album, but the album as a whole is great. Another one of the songs was used for years for a perfume commercial. And then the second album is full of maybe lesser known but still amazing songs. He's just an incredible musician. I love him so much

Hey! Grace Kelly is an amazing song! I have some recommendations to check out from him: Relax (take it easy), Underwater, Happy Ending (Orchestra Version), Over my shoulder (Orchestra Version), Origin of Love, Good Guys, Tiny Love & Any other world for starters! Discovering Mika was one of the best things I ever did in my life and I hope you‘ll enjoy his music just as much as I do. Also yes, Mika was talking about Freddie Mercury in the song and he even wrote a song about Freddie Mercury called "Last Party" and Freddie has been one of the people Mika looked up to during his childhood especially since he is also gay and therefore often faced the same struggles. Great reaction, he‘s a great songwriter who’s so very underrated!

Grace Kelly and Fred Astaire did some movies together. She was a graceful dancer and considered a very good actress. She gave it away to marry Prince Rainier of Monaco.

So, okay, now that I've got you, dtory behind the song; yes he is talking about Freddie Mercury, because I do believe he was offered to be in Queen when he was REALLY young, just getting started--he's 23 in this video, by the way--but he said he wanted to be his own man, so Adam Lambert took the role later on. But in terms of 'satisfy yourself' and all that, no, he's talking about all the times he got rejected at the door as a musician, and he's a resilient f*cker and would always say, "Let's go bang on another door."

no one does opening lines like mika - "wake up in the morning, stumble on my life", "it's an age old conversation that is changing with the times", "i was born in that summer when the sun didn't shine, i was given the name that doesn't feel like it's mine", and of course "walk through the city like stupid people do" 😉

Considering the high strong MMMMMM after 'try a little Freddy' I always thought he meant Mercury

I have the WEIRDEST story behind how I first heard this song. It's maybe three o'clock in the morning, I'm sixteen going on seventeen, I wake up, middle of the night, can't sleep, turn on the radio, and it's in the middle of this. And I'm lying there like, "Freddie...? Freddie Mercuury?" And then it clicks in my brain, "No, this voice is too young." I heard it again waking up to my alarm-radio, same morning, and the DJ said it was a guy named, ahem, "Mike-a", and no, it's "MEEK-a", and I'm like, "I gotta find out who this guy is." So, few days later, I saw the video on TV, fell head over heels in love because he's GORGEOUS, okay, from a certain female perspective, right, but he's gay, and by the time I figured that out, I didn't care anymore anyway, because DAYUM he's a good musician. Love the art, not the artist.

So I think the little girl is either his cousin or his producer's daughter...? Can't remember which, but that's not her voice, it's his. He just had them pitch it up so he'd sound like a woman, which I think is hilarious. He got MUCH better control over his falsetto over the years, but he did say the easiest way to hit those notes was to twist your nuts a bit. I THINK he was kidding...hopefully?
