Understanding basic theory of how toners work: Look at a color wheel. You will notice these colors across from each other:
Purple across from Yellow (blonde undertone)..... Green across from Red (brunette undertone).... Blue across from Orange (self-explanatory)..... Those colors cancel each other out.

**This comment needs more ‘likes’! It’s basic color theory that doesn’t change whether your art is on a canvas, a monitor, or on your hair - it’s All Art. Keeping it simple is key. Everything’s easy when you know how, ie: why you’re doing What you’re doing. By knowing what you’re starting with and knowing what you want to end up with will tell you how to get there. 🌹💙⚡️

Love your videos! This was super helpful.
I have an issue that I never see much info on. I have hair that is super grey/white at the from but dark at the back (about a level 6) . My hair is currently bleached to level 9/10 (toned with a champagne/pearl toner). My hair feels super damaged these days so how do I transition to something less damaging. What kind of colour should I go if I’m kind of a zebra? 💕 white at front/ dark at the back.
Would love to see a video about us greying folks xxx
Thanks for sharing your wisdom and beauty. Stay safe and healthy 💕💕💕

Thank you for this explanation! When my roots come in, I have 25% white hairs mixed with my natural tone which is 6 ashy/neutral brunette and I use chromatics 7n + 7 ash on the roots then I tone zones 2 and 3 with some pretty ashy Shades EQ...but i haven't been able to achieve the ashy tone I want and now, finally, I understand why! Unfortunately, I don't want to have to use bleach, so I will have to figure out what I want to do now.

  • @aprilmtucker

I always learn so much everytime I watch your videos,Silvia! I wish I would of seen your links here before I bought all my products because I just bleached my burgundy red ombre hair... I only bleached it once but I used colour off first. I used Schwarzkopf BlondMe (I recommend anyone reading this purchase Schwarzkopf BlondMe it's the best & there's a link in the description of this video for everything pretty much I used) after that & then because I still had a little red left I used Schwarzkopf highlift 12-11 & I did a root melt with dark ash blonde. It turned out really good I didn't even need to tone it & my hair looked healthier than before I started surprisingly. I did add Olaplex to both the colour off & the blondeme bleach & I used 20 volume and when I mixed the volume because my hair was already so light from the colour off instead of adding 2 parts of volume I added 2 and a half with the olaplex. But my hair was already an 8 and even a 10 in some spots cause I had an ombre with light ends. I was focusing on the stubborn red at the top which I was kind of worried might not come out cause my hair is so porous. I left everything in a long time to process & used a hair dryer bonnet that I got on Amazon. I used to always go to the salon but I suffered a spinal cord injury on my neck & I have alot of spine issues along with Lupus. So it's really hard for me to sit in a chair for hours let alone have a mask on the whole time. I'd rather do it myself & take my time at home it's so much easier plus I feel like my hair gets less damaged cause I can really baby my hair when I'm doing it. BTW Silvia great video as usual and thank you for sharing Bondiboost on Instagram. I ordered the blonde baby trio & Repair Repair set. Great products! ❤️

So basically, could it also be that the reason why my purple shampoo doesn't seem work is because I'm a "warm" level 6 at bas?e.. So the way for me to get to an ashy tone is to bleach more first?

I am naturally a level 6/7 and am about 50% gray. Every color I have used (home or salon) always looks orangey. After watching this, I am thinking that I should bleach my roots and then tone down. What should I use as a toner?

I feel so completely robbed by my hair colorist. I went in to bleach my hair so that I could dye it a fun color on top. I expected that it would take at least two sessions. I got recommendations for this salon, so I went there. She doubled bleached my dyed black hair to get it light enough. I blindly trusted her. I came out of there with new bangs that I didn't want because there was breakage from the bleach. I still continuously see little hairs, which means that it's still breaking 6 weeks later. Instead of doing my research properly, I paid someone hundreds of dollars to be the expert so that I didn't have to do too much research. I figured she knew what she was doing. I thought that I would have to come in more than once, but I was like, she's the expert... I'm beyond disappointed because I've been wanting a fun color in my hair for YEARS. And I'm out almost $500 plus damage to my hair, plus breakage and new baby bangs. I wish I had seen this video ahead of time and insisted on multiple visits. Or gone do a different colorist completely.

What about this scenario?... I am HALF asian/HALF caucasion. My natural color is basically a soft medium'ish to dark slightly ash brown (not BLACK). i'd say maybe a shade or 2 lighter than black. I am 44 and starting to get greys. So been trying to get that taken care of. But ughhhh,,, Everytime I get my hair colored to try and stay as close to my natural color,,, it ends up JET BLACK. So frustrating. Wether i've gotten it done at the salon or done it myself... ALWAYS ENDS UP BEING VIBRANT JET BLACK. This last time i went to the salon to get my style changed (had an old grown out balayage, and grown out too long. I was way over due.) they did a cute cut, color corrected all of the remaining light pieces and then went over it with a 5 or 6 BP i think it was (i preferred the NA used prior though). Still turned out JET BLack. Im sad.... LOL Although after time and washing it does end up pretty close to my natural. but the first few months its like wheeeeewwww chilllleeeee.

I've been doing hair for awhile, never can stop learning, love your videos I am lisenced, so color is not my specialty but im starting to rock it like everything else. I do have a question about being ash. so not wanting to go lighter, would I need to go two levels darker or just one?

Hey Silvia! Was wondering your opinion about using the new Redken acid shampoo and treatments while having extensions in? Will it be safe for them?

My daughter tried to lighten my hair. First she used blue bleach from Sally’s beauty supply. Turned my hair like a redhead orange! So then we used the color charm 9A light Ash. My hair turned more orange.
I found your TH-cam channel and you suggested going one color darker. So I purchased 8A/740.5 light ash blond. Using 20 volume. Well the top of my hair still has orange a lighter orange color. The lower part is darker but has a light orange.
    What would you suggest?

What were you before the first bleach? Level 6 or darker you'd need to bleach a 2nd time like she said in this video. Dark hair goes orange first before blonde while trying to lift. It's just the in between/ can't get all the color out at once. Once you get it light enough then use toner to cancel the brassy color.

Orange lives at a level 6 or 7. Using a level 8 or 9 toner will do nothing on that orange that level is not dark enough to deposit anything either use a level 6 or 7 ash toner on that orange or relighted to a pale yellow color to get out of the orange tones....

I'm rapt to find you, thanks for your explanation! Is hair colour stripping any sort of option? I'm trying to get rid of dark brown hair colouring to get closer to my now fairly grey hair and my hair is quite fragile and bleach may not be an option. Thanks so much for your videos!

If your refreshing the color (Demi-permanent) is ammonia free and provides a shine and tones to enhance gold, ash, reds or brunettes

I am a natural brown and my hairdresser has gotten me to a silver ash with black roots. However we keep getting a rusty color between the silver and the black. How can we get rid of the rusty line of color between the two colors? My hairdresser says there is nothing we can do about the rusty part between the two.

My hairdresser dyes my roots level 5 with 20 vol 3 times a year. She had done the full head level 5/0 a year ago but i prefered it as it faded and looked lighter than my roots. I said this too her but i said i think it needs a refresh as its looking a bit red. She had used perm 5/0 on my roots for 20mins the perm 5/0 on my mid length ends for another 20 mins. Now my ends look black. Next year when i need it re doing what should i ask for?

Love your videos. My base is getting too dark from touching up the roots at Crown and back of neck. It looks black even though i use chromasilk 6n. Can i lighten the base before i highlight?

Wow- I've learned so much watching your videos over and over- I'm *almost* ready to take on my previously professionally highlighted/lowlighted hair (last done in July) which now has my box dyed (now brass/orange-ish) long roots and gray/level 6 fresh 3/4" roots. A lot going on! but I I want to try to balayage with natural 6 root blend/gray cover and shadow. I've watched so many of your videos and will try using esalon root permanent color and their lightening kit. If doing my own, which brand permanent color and toner should I use that's available to at-home quarantined armature styliststs?
