I really appreciated the explanations on the brunette-specific issues. Most of the color issues I've had in the past were directly answered by your explanations. Thank you!
I have dark brown hair with a bit of grey mixed in; however, my hair stylist uses Schwarzkopf Blondme bleach with Kevin Murphy toner in pearl and I have to say this works every time! no more orange hair which used to happen all the time with other bleaches and toners. I also use Monat shampoo and conditioner which I think keeps the hair healthy and allows the bleach to work more easily. Love your videos!
Aww, wish I got my question in. You somewhat answered it but here goes. My hair is graying, I might be about 70%, I don't want to go totally gray as a look and my brunette hair color with gray roots has been making me feel old. I don't have a big budget for hair salons and I know I wouldn't do an efficient job if I did it myself. As a kid, my friend's mom said she just used a boxed color blonde on her virgin dark blonde hair/light brown hair and got a beautiful blonde, I'm sure she's gray now over the years and her hair still looks exactly the same. I'd like to be able to do my own hair to save money and avoid having to put up with roots. I asked my hair dresser about going blonde and she said she's afraid to do it on my hair since I'm fighting some hair thinning on the top of my head. It's been getting better with effort on my part and I still want to go blonde and be able to do it at home. If I get it done at a salon first to lift off my light brown hair dye, will I be able to create a decent blonde at home myself? What would that be like to do? I've often wondered what the blonde root spray cover up really looks like on blonde hair, would that help cover salt and pepper roots in between (The medium brown works great but not sure about blonde.)?
Dark hair from level 1-8 will always have a orange/red undertone. The only way to get rid of the red/orange is to bleach to a level 9 (yellow), then go back down. Will likely give a mushroomy/greenish result
A level 1 is Black. If you use blue black haircolor like I have done you don't get a red/orange cast to your hair, you will have a white cast to your hair. That would be an ash black.
I just bleached my natural leve5/6ish hair to platinum blonde in one process with foils and I can't "seal/close" my hair with tonner(not available where I live) can I use a light blonde hair color with 10V instead 🤔 I reached platinum blonde and plan on using a level 9 hair dye to just bring everything down just one level or a 9 on my roots and 10 on the ends🤷🏼♂️
I have bleached my hair twice and applied toner. It is still a very orangey color. How long should I wait before trying to lighten it again, or, would you suggest I do something different?
@@zaria5785 Oh, I should've posted to let you know how it turned out! Between lightening it more, using blue shampoo and toner, hair is much more like how I wanted it. I'm on FB. If you want to check out a pic of me on there, you can.
I have a question or maybe a request I have level 2/3 I really don’t know. Dark brown but I also have a lot of gray mostly concentrated on my temples like lily Munster and then lightly scattered around throughout my head. Anyway I want to lighten up my hair 2 levels say. I think it would be more flattering on my aging skin tone. I’m not sure how to tackle that. If I use demi permanents most of the time it doesn’t stay more than 2 weeks. Perhaps just using an ash or neutral demi permanent or 2 shades lighter of permanent or both? Basically I want to use my gray as highlights. Thank you. Oh your “bad” hair is gorgeous better then my good hair. 😂. Also what tones look good for someone with a more ruddy or roseaca complexion. I’m being greedy with the questions. 😬
You're amazing- thanks for answering all these questions! We'd love to see your extension process in a video. Also, my question: Most the videos I've seen are blonde, but what about the other way? I'm having trouble getting back to brunette. Only my ends are blonde and I only want to cover those. What I'm confused about is "permanent" dyes...are they really that permanent?! Like, will I have to wait for my roots to grow completely out in order to get rid of that color? ...It would be cool to try a new color brunette that my hair isn't naturally, but I only want that for a short time. I would really like to have my natural color (a weird multi-faceted brown that has different tones in it, depending on the lighting..I like darker browns, but ultimately, I just want to rock my virgin hair). So, I tried a temporary color; from Sally's (in a copper bottle)...that won't even cover up the blonde! It lasts only a few washes on the lighter tones and only darkens it a little. So, I finally found a "semi-permanent" box dye at the grocery store (lol), but will I have the same problem with that?
@jke387 permanent haircolor is really permanent. You either have to wait for it to grow out, or you use bleach to take the color out. Semi-permanent haircolor washes out after a number of shampoos. Demi-permanent last longer than semi-permanent and washes out after many more washes than semi-permanent.
If your natural is brunette and your ends are very blonde, you have to fill it with the missing underlying pigment first and then apply your target shade to make the color hold onto your hair better. Blonde hair is porous and color will fall right out of the hair because it has nothing to hold onto. You need to apply orange/copper to replace the natural underlying melanin that would show when you're bleaching, and THEN on top put your target brunette color. This can all be done with semi/Demi permanent because permanent might be too harsh on your already blonde ends. Hope this helps.
I am letting my silver /salt and pepper roots grow out. It’s about three inches of regrowth. The rest is blonde ends. Is there something I can put on the blonde to blend with my silver roots?
From my experience if you don’t want to process your hair any further, just let it grow out and keep trimming every few weeks until the blonde ends are gone. Or maybe go for a shorter cut?
When you say "tone down to a level 6 ashy color" can you be specific about what type of toner you mean? Do you mean to lighten to a level 8 and then use a demipermanent color to tone?
Love your videos ! As so many do! I have level 9 blonde thin fine semi dry hair. How can I make it lighter by a level and brighter at home? Without causing breakage. Should I use bleach? High-lift? What is a good at home toner that you can buy that you don’t have to have cosmo license for, for a pearl blonde tone? , a butter blonde, and ash blonde? What’s the best toner or root tap to remove harsh bleach foil lines at the root, that you can buy without cosmo license. What’s the best thing to strengthen baby hairs ? How often to shampoo if your a light light blonde? Should you only bleach your hair if your using olaplex or blondeme ? Or can you just use old school powdered bleach? Any thoughts?🙏🏼 for sharing your advice and help with doing your videos. :)
What should I avoid when I’m bleaching my clients brown, Burgundy or just already colored hair so that it does not burn off or break off when bleaching ... please help a video on this would be so helpful!!!
I’m growing out my blonde colour.. my natural is quite a cool toned salt and pepper grey. Is there anyway if darkening or toning down the blonde ends apart from purple shampoo?
I love the look of adding babylights to touchup/enhance a balayge. If you alternate between the two I think it can still be a managable and quite low maintnace.
Love your videos! Thrilled to find such a great channel now that I am beginning to dye my hair. Q: I am female, mid thirties, dying my natural brunette for the first time to cover my grays. I lifted my virgin hair from about a level 3/4 to 7, then dyed it copper red/orange. Now that it is beginning to grow out, do I repeat the lift/ dye on the roots and leave the rest fairly untouched, or extend it through the already colored parts to help even out the overall look? Should I have done anything differently that would keep hair healthier? Would love to know your advice, Thanks so much!
I’m dying my hair semi permanent red. I have bleached it first as I’m naturally really dark brown. My question for you is should use 20 % or 30 % developer to mix the colour with? Thanks ❤️
Since it’s already bleached I’d say go with a 10% first if you’re doing this at home. It is time consuming to to achieve the results you want but you will save your scalp from burning and you won’t fry your hair. This way you can give yourself a deep conditioning mask in between each process. Wishing you all the best.
@@katieosull63 if your roots have grown out to virgin dark brown then yes you will get “hot roots” once the semi permanent color fades. It will always fade to what your base color is before you put semipermanent color on your hair. Do a test strip in a section of hair that is under the crown of your hair and check it every 10-15 minutes. Spread the color out and splay your hair between your fingers so it mixes with air to REALY activate it. Comb it through to get even results and keep checking to see what your desired color is and document it- maybe it’s 45-50 minutes of processing on your roots and 15-20 minutes for the rest of your hair. Hope this helps. ✌🏼
Hi I'm needing some guidance please. I'm around a base 5-6 (with previous ombre ends covered with a level 6 box dye) ive now got around 2inch regrowth, it's not to drastic though but I'm wanting to put some highlights throughout to brighten it up, then apply a level 8 with low volume peroxide all over especially cover my roots (even highlighted pieces) with it's and like comb it though to drag it down to create depth and then tone afterwards. Would this be a good way to go about getting it looking all one colour but with lots of depth and slightly lighter and darker pieces without it being to much of a contrast. Also what kind of foil placement would you recommend, i have a centre parting blunt cut shoulder length hair (that I'm trying to grow out so wear up alot) but don't want the Mohawk stripe look when I do wear it down, could doing diagonally be a good way to create a more natural look? Any advice you can give me would be much appreciated, you're videos are very informative and helpful and enjoyable to watch. Thankyou x
Hi, I have a question, and I've been meaning to set up a virtual consultation with you, but have been lazy... and anyways, hopefully you are still doing those, cuz I'll be hitting you up soon. Ok my question is, I have level 2 (I think) super dark brown hair (Like Asian hair) really thick, and hard to lift.. Used to lighten my hair with a 10-21 permanent (schwartzkopf) with 30 vol and THEN do highlights.. but recently have tried to touch up my root highlights without bumping up the base, so that I can avoid the brass that always comes with lifting color, and also because I wanted to see if the bleach worked better on virgin hair... however, even with TINY slices and TINY weaves, and a thousand foils, I've had to do multiple sessions of lightening, (which is hard since highlights). And it doesn't matter how high the developer is, it never lifts past a orangey level 8... however when I tone the roots, using 7n, 7v, it still gives off this orangey tone... should I be using a level 6 shadow? I almost want to give up and just go back to bumping the base with that non-contrast look of blorangey yellow. (Also use BlondME 9 lift w/ bonder, plus olaplex, but recently tried Redken Flashlift with bonder and that didn't lift half as well as the Blondme- so I know it's not the bleach) Overall, I'm a level 9 sandy blonde all over highlights but these roots are killing me, and I just did a third session of highlights without the base bump, and the side face frame near my ears finally lifted to a pale yellow, but they also kinda fried a bit, since I lightened them 3 times in the last 5 weeks... I just wanted to get them lighter before it was already time to do my roots again... gah! Anyways, I'll probably just ask you this in a virtual, since my question is pretty specific and complicated lol.. Thanks for all of your videos, you've provided so much info on things, I hope you know how amazing you are!!
I have been trying to get my hair like yours in this video, I’m a natural level 4and have bleached, now I’m orange, gold level 8 maybe. Do you recommend using igora high-lift 10-0 or blondeme toner ?
Grey roots question. Can I put a medium ash brown on my grey roots wait say 5 min for it to process some then put a med aburn on top? I find the medium auburn leaves my hair a pale red. Now that im older Im trying to avoid going too dark, it no longer looks good with my complexion but I also dont want to be pale red.
Your hair colour is so amazing in this video can you make a video how to achive this plzz want more brunette and chocolate hair tutorial plzzz so amazing you are and your video is so informative 😙😙😙
Do you recommend going lighter for people that have grey in terms of it being less noticeable in between hair appointments? Also my hair is currently a level 6 with lots of warmth in it so how dark would I have to go to cancel out the warmth, although I don’t mind a little warmth left in as I think it makes it look healthier?
@ellebangs what different ways can you color your grays, especially if their only white, to just match your natural color? Can you do anything that isn't permanent? Thanks so much!
So if I wanted to tone my virgin hair level 5 so it’s a darker ashy brown color would my hair no long be considered virgin hair I’d say a year down the road I wanted to go blonde? Also, how long will toning my hair last say from going from level 5 virgin hair, toning to a level 4 ashy? Thanks, you look stunning as always 💕
This is good question. If you tone with a no lift toner you shouldn't have any issues lightening your hair in a year!! However it no longer is virgin hair because there could still be remanence of that toner left on the hair. Still much easier to lighten than permanent color would be in a level 4.
Just a question, I have mostly grey growing in. I'm going to lighten my hair from a 7 to a 9. If I want the root smudge to be darker, a brown root, what would I use for that?
I was coloring my hair at home when I could not afford a salon anymore. Now my hair is silver gray halfway down my head and then the other half is dark, so I can't do just one time at home anymore. Any suggestions?
@ellebangs If you're a natural 6 to 7 and you have white grays sporadically coming through all equally over your head is their a way to just tone it or use semi or demi permanent color to match those grays to your natural color? Or is there any way to make your natural color look less dulled down from those grays that are growing so equally throughout your hair? Thank you so much?
Hi Sylvia, my question is ...I decided to go from a level 10 blonde to a level 7 dark blonde and it turned out almost black at the roots. I have 90% grey hence that’s why I’ve been a blonde most of my life. I used a 20vol on my roots and 10 vol for the rest of my hair. The roots are far to dark. How can I fix this and why did the roots turn out so dark. Looking forward to hearing from you. Btw love your videos💕❤️🌹💕
@AidaRosa, Aida, as you haven't had any response from Sylvia, I would say that grey hair is very resistant but at the same time it has a very light "fresher" canvas than the rest of your hair. It absorbs more the color than the rest. Hence the reason why hairdressers always tell to bleach the roots at the end and not at the beginning of the bleaching process. So if you are happy with the length of your hair but not the roots, you could remove the color from the roots with a hair color remover and reapply but leaving it half to a third of the regular processing time. That way it will have less time to process darker... I am not a hairdresser but to me it makes sense. The other thing if you think your lengths are too dark as well is to go to a shade lighter. And I think that it is always nicer to have a root shadow... rather than the exact same color all over.
@@HazeleyesCat Thank you for your help and suggestion. I’ll lighten the dark band at the roots and see how it turns out. I might need to go a tad lighter with the colour❤️🌹❤️
So I bleached and dyed my brunette hair with ash blonde dye without researching how to do it! So it’s unclear to me how to fix my orange hair. Since I do have color on the hair now do I tone or keep bleaching to the level I want. And if I do bleach to the level I want, do I then dye again or just tone it? Or do I just tone it now to get rid of the orange?
Someone help. I’m at the point where my bleached blonde hair is so broken and damaged. I’m naturally a level 3 with level 9/10 blonde highlights. I’ve been getting full highlights every 6 weeks for 5 years. I want my hair to be healthy but I don’t want to go back to dark brown. So I really have to choose between blonde hair and healthy hair? Can I take extra good care of my hair with olaplex and high quality conditioning masks and still stay blonde?
Hi! I have been using wella T10 with 20 volume developer. I would like to go a few shades darker to get some demension. What would you recommend ? Thanks!
I have bleached my hair to level 10-9, then my hairdresser coloured my hair to a level 7 in purple colour (developer 20). I felt it's too dark. I'm wondering when the current lv7purple color fading, will it fade to level 9? Or will it stay in level 7?
It will fade to a level 9- And you can always ask a hairdresser to give you a semipermanent color gloss first so as to not damage your hair - but also to test out if the end result will be what you like.
Hi pretty! So I have had my hair a level 10 silvery tone for about a year now, and I made the mistake of going to a level 8 around December, ended up hating it, and going back up to a 10 in January. It’s dead. And now my roots are hideous and getting too long: would it make my hair healthier if I went back darker, or would it just LOOK healthier? Trying to decide whether to do my roots or just darken it and get over it.
I have a question so I dyed my hair 2 weeks ago black & I wanted to dye my hair red but only the roots were red & the rest of my hair is still dark. Am I suppose to use color oops first to get out all of the hair dye from when I dye it black & then dye my hair red??? Also how do I fix hot roots.
Go to sallys or any beauty store you have where you live. They have a formula made with argon oil that works a lot better than color oops. Didn't think it was possible but it is lol. Anyways, you use that, wait about 2 days, then dye your hair whatever color you want. Sometimes you may need to use it twice or 3 times, depending how it works on your dark hair. Just make sure to use a deep hydration or moisture conditioner.

I am a natural strawberry blond that decided to go white blond. How can I get back to my natural color?
When you say "tone down to a level 6 ashy color" can you be specific about what type of toner you mean? Do you mean to lighten to a level 8 and then use a demipermanent color to tone?
Hi Love, yes in order to tone "down" to a level 6 yes, this is assuring you have to be above that level. Preferably a level 8 yes!
@@Ellebangs omg, thank you so much!!!
Hi hunny! I have black hair with henna. Please tell me how long should I wait because I need to do balayage. Please tell me!!
What color lipstick are you wearing? And blush?
Blush is Charlotte Tilbury, lipstick is Mac -creme de nude.
I’m growing out my blonde colour.. my natural is quite a cool toned salt and pepper grey. Is there anyway if darkening or toning down the blonde ends apart from purple shampoo?
Hey Silvia, would you recommend getting babylights on top a 3 month old balayage? Would that still be considered low- maintenance?
Absolutely, that's what I do. But I find that the babylights don't make it bright enough sometimes and I always go back wanting more blonde
I love the look of adding babylights to touchup/enhance a balayge. If you alternate between the two I think it can still be a managable and quite low maintnace.
Thanks Sil! Always the best.
@@KyraSchaeffer hey Kyra, do babylights grow out well? Or will there be a harsh line over time?
@@zaria5785 thanks so much! I will use 10 developer then! Is there a chance to get hot roots when you apply it to the scalp when I do this method?
😍what color and brand you use for your roots??
I have been trying to get my hair like yours in this video, I’m a natural level 4and have bleached, now I’m orange, gold level 8 maybe. Do you recommend using igora high-lift 10-0 or blondeme toner ?
For a medium skin tone that has yellow undertones/blue green vains, would a beige, sandy, or ash blonde compliment that more? Natural Level 6.
Bleach is beautiful !! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
yes ma'am, indeed.
I have darkest brown hair but want to colour my hair pink shade. But I am unsure which shade would better catch for my hair
Colored my hair Dark Auburn It's too dark What can I do to lighten some ,? Please belp
what is the true difference between the olaplex 6 and 7? is one better than the other for really dry bleached damaged hair?
Thank you 💕
I just saw you do a short cameo on HBO's Mrs. Fletcher. Episode 2❤️
I got a question I had blonde hair when I was little so if I dyed my hair dark blonde with hazel eyes fair tone skin will this color look good on me?
hello! if i want to go from a pale level 10 blonde to an ashy level 8, do i need to use a filler first? and if so, what would you recommend?
Btw love your videos💕❤️🌹💕
wow! this is really strange... I would love to know the answer too... it should have turned dark blonde as you used a 20vol developer...
@@66blonde66 let me know how you get on.
If im at a level 8 beigy blonde can i use a ash highlift to make it a bit lighter and tone it down? Without bleaching it or just a toner would work
Can you hi lift on colored hair?
No because color cannot lift previous colored hair; hi lift only works on virgin hair.
Can I take extra good care of my hair with olaplex and high quality conditioning masks and still stay blonde?
very helpful
Thanks Marla!!
Amazing information
Your hair will never be healthier by colouring it. You need to use hair products to help the dry dead hair.
you become much more confident throughout your videos
What color are your roots?
Holaa. Pudieran traducirlos a español ..saludos grs.
Sylvia is beautiful.
Thanks love!
Your hair looks amazing. FYI 😉
