    Short explanation of the mechanic: When using an aerial, landing before the hitbox begins or after it ends will cause the character to have less landing lag then they would if they landing during the attack normally.

    If you don’t understand, I’ll break it down really simply for you guys:
    When you jump normally without inputting any aerial, you hit the ground eventually (well, no shit). You might have not noticed this because this game is 60 frames per second, but when you land on the ground, there are 4 frames where you cannot input any other move. This state is called “landing lag.” Now 4 frames is 4/60th of a second. Or 1/15th of a second, however you prefer to see it. So this landing lag is so damn small that we perceive it as no lag. So we are gonna call 4 frames of landing lag as ‘no landing lag.’
    If 4 frames is so fast that we hardly even perceive it, then why add the frames at all? What’s the point? Well, it’s for the animation to look and feel more natural. If there were literally 0 frames of landing lag, this game would be waayyyyy too fucking fast. It would be unbearable. All the characters would seem like flies just zipping around the screen. It would be too fast for your own good; it would take years to be able to control it well. It would make a hell of a competitive scene but it would turn away beginners and casual players, which we all know is Sakurai’s main audience. Casual players are the majority of consumers that buy the game! Plus, 0 frames of landing lag would look funny. You wouldn’t even get to see your character landing with their knees bent. It would look very unnatural. But adding 4 frames is still pretty short so it’s part of what makes Ultimate a faster paced game than Brawl and Smash 4.
    When you do aerials in the middle of your jump and land on the ground, there are more frames of landing lag added. Every move is different, so learn your character’s frame data if it interests you. Or just be like me and think “damn this move is laggy as fuck.” “Wow this move has no land lag.” “Fuck you Ike’s neutral air for having no god damn landing lag”
    For example. Ganon’s forward air. Heavy as fuck. When you land, there is a good amount amount of landing lag. If he misses the attack, he is open to get freely hit because he is in this state of vulnerability where you can hit him. But that’s a good thing because if that swole mother fucker hits you with that shit, you’re gonna die! Landing lag is part of the balancing process that prevents characters from being broken and ruining the game. AKA the risk:reward factor.
    Now play as Wolf. Jump, wait till your arc peaks, then fall back down. In the middle of you falling back down, do a back-air. When you land, there will be some lag before you can input anything else. This video says there are 15 frames of landing lag from Wolf’s back air. That’s much more than 4 frames AKA “no lag.” It’s still a really short amount of lag because 15/60th of a second is pretty fast. But it can be the difference that causes someone to shield grab you because you’re all caught up in your lag.
    Now, try the back air as soon as you jump up. An instant back air. By the time you land, the move didn’t get to finish its animation, but the game doesn’t give a fuck. They think your move did enough work since it was so god damn early. So Sakurai was nice to you and Wolf lands with “no lag” despite using the back air! This is called an auto-cancel aerial. Because the game automatically cancelled your landing lag that you otherwise would have gotten if you didn’t time it the way you did.
    Now, to auto cancel, it doesn’t always have to be instantly when you jump. There are different timings. If you watch the video now, it will explain more thoroughly about these timings and why it works.
    Not every move can be autocancelled, but a good amount can. Train your main in the training room (aka the lab) and experiment which aerials auto-cancels and which don’t! Or just look it up on google. Or both. Do whatever the fuck you wanna do.

    You don't press any button for an auto cancel, hence why it's called AUTO cancel. It happens automatically as you land with aerials if you get the correct timing. The purpose of this video was to explain that auto canceling happens during a certain frame window. You have to land your aerials at a certain time for them to cancel the lag automatically. If you miss the timing, you will go through the normal landing lag which means you are more likely to get punished.

    • @ChemyChem
      @ChemyChem 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just to add on, every aerial move has a different amount of landing lag. Wolf back air has 15 frames of landing lag while Inkling back air has 6 frames of landing lag which is obviously less laggier.

    You can also use the startup autocancel to cancel landing lag from other moves. For example, Ness will usually land with some lag after doing an aerial PK Fire. However, he is able to input an aerial right before touching the ground, and use its startup autocancel to land lagless. Obviously character dependent but still good to know.

  • @benv4514

    For anyone who still doesnt get it, some moves take a certain amount of time to end. When this period of time is over if you land you wll be able to do anything faster, so if your aerial attack is very fast and doesnt have much lag at the end you can use it to attack and quickly continue a combo or retreat if you spaced your attack or punish when it hits a shield and is blocked.

      J [Guerrero] it’s really not that unnecessary though, this guy obviously studies frame data and that’s how he got his point across. The terminology of frame data can kinda be simplified to the lower the number, the faster the move but that ain’t what i’m talking about. My point is that he’s legit just naming off what he’s doing, and if you can’t understand his terminology then look it up it’s not that hard. But the terms he was saying aren’t exactly useless or unseeded, they are literally just the name of the moves

  • @DemonFang72
    @DemonFang72 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    For those still confused:
    FIRST: Not all moves can be auto-canceled.
    An auto cancel is achieved differently than an l-cancel.
    L-cancelling is about pressing a shield input before you land during an aerial attack to "speed up" the recovery animation.
    Auto-cancelling achieves an even greater lag reduction (because it defaults to a basic/short landing animation) with less inputs because it's all about "interrupting" your aerial during certain spots of its animation.
    This boils down to timing an a aerial attack with different jump heights, fast fall timings, drop distances, etc.
    Like he said before, it tends to be a bit after the move comes out, but many moves do appear to have multiple windows.
    Revisit the video above for examples for how to check which moves can be auto canceled both numerically and tips for trial/error.

      Basically teaching you how certain moves, if fast falled actually give you more lag.. which may seem counterintuitive.. since fast falling usually means getting to the ground faster. But some moves give you more lag depending on if you fast fell or not. I didn’t know this information... and to be honest I’m learning something everyday about this game and the amount of tech and information and the vast general size of this game really overwhelms me. The skill level ceiling is miles high.

    how do you consistently do frame perfect full hop aerials without accidentally triggering the short hop aerial shortcut?

    • @ChemyChem
      @ChemyChem 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every character in the game has a jump squat of 3 frames essentially means that the character takes a total of three frames to transition from grounded to airborne. If you let go of the jump button during those three frames, you will get a short hop and if you don't, you will get a full hop. Getting a frame perfect full hop is trickier now due to the short hop aerial mechanic and it's definitely not consistent but with time, you can get the timing down and get as close as you can to a frame perfect full hop aerial.

    I feel dumb asking this but is it like L canceling in melee? Like using the shield button

    • @nocturn333
      @nocturn333 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This involves landing at certain point during the move instead of pushing a button during landing.

    You cannot auto-cancel. It is not a thing you can do.

  • @bireon878
    @bireon878 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The creator did not mention that there's not a specific input you have to do like 99% of advanced techs or terminology in Smash games thus this video is confusing and misleading to those trying to learn since I'm sure people tried shielding after attacks to auto cancel after watching this.

      @mushroomyploom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was. Auto cancel only relies on the timing, there is no input needed. The timing is what is described in the video.

    You mean L-Cancelling?

    • @ChemyChem
      @ChemyChem 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. Every aerial move has their own "auto cancel" window. For example, Wolf back air can be auto canceled from frames 1-7 and then frame 19 onwards. What this means is that if you land with back air from frames 8-18, you will land with the aerial landing lag which in this case, would be 15 frames, which is considerably "laggier" or "slower" than if you land during the autocancel window which gives you a "hard" (don't think too hard about it) landing lag which is 4 frames across the whole roster. I really hope this explains. No input on the controller, just timing.

    • @ChemyChem
      @ChemyChem 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just for clarification, Wolf back air takes a total of 44 frames to finish which means is that if you are in the air and input a back air, you will be forced to go through the move in which your allowed to input another move on frame 45 as the move has finished entirely.

      @JoroTheSpaz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Basically, landing at a certain point in the move (usually near the start or end of the move), allows the move to have reduced landing lag than if it were not autocancelled. Different moves have different autocancel windows.

      He did, most aerials have different timing for it so there isn't a certain input to do it with every aerial.
