I talk A LOT in this video because I aim to share as much useful info as possible! But if you just want to see Harlow rocking it at the gym, skip to 15:40. 😊
Haha I love this comment! Only here to see Harlow. No just kidding, I liked the whole video a lot! I would love to learn more about your exercise regimen, because this is something I struggle with.
Thank you for not editing out that wave of nausea. It's super relatable and as soon as I saw your hand go towards your mouth my reaction was "yup, I feel that on a spiritual level". Keep fighting girl! You got this!
I go to the gym with a support worker who helps keep me on track due to my cognitive and balance issues. My physio has come up with a fantastic program that helps with strengthening (hyper mobility). In the few months I’ve been going with this program I have come a long way.
Most tips you've given apply to most individuals with significant clinical issues. Thank you for your videos! Its unfortunate, but service teams looking for a gym are often turned away from chain/franchise gyms as the staff are not willing to take on the risk. Operator owned gyms are usually more open to unique circumstances. Also, depending on the medical/insurance schemes in your area, you might have to engage a professional with training to manage medical conditions (most personal trainers aren't). In Australia they're known as Exercise Physiologists.
I was at the pool in my local YMCA. There was a service dog there. He was such a good boy. His handler put him in a down stay under a bench and no one even knew he was there, even all the children in the pools.
I recently just quit my gym because I couldn't find a good way to work out with my service dog because of the set up. I was pretty bummed, but haven't even thought about going to check out smaller places or other gyms! Thanks so much for sharing. I needed that confidence boost!
Good for you conquering that plank... those are not easy! I’m glad to see he has you doing an elbow plank as I find those a lot easier to hold since you can dig into the mat with your hands and elbows. Your form was amazing too!
Oliver loves the gym! He is naturally shy and introspective. So he is always loving to go. Our gym is really quiet most days. He even learned to sit/lay down near the tread mill. His 2 main ways that he assists me is by guiding and forward momentum (see channel if you want a few more details on why). But this year. After years of being together he alerts to any serious breathing issue before it gets serious. I was born with a hole in my heart and a muscle wrapped around my Aorta. I still have the hole and narrowing. If my Asthma flares so does my heart etc. ... So he blocks my body and becomes pushy pushy till I sit down. (currently trying to attach a knee to paw alert but still working on it) I feel so much safer taking him with me knowing that either way he will tell me earlier than I can tell myself. My biggest tip is to recognize that your dog may be in "ready to alert mode" (even if that is not his/her main task sometimes) So be extra assertive in your needs to not have folks talking or petting your dog. Your health comes first. Also 2nd tip patience is massive. Tread mills and weighted pully machines can be very scary to the best behaved dog. So go when you know traffic is limited at the gym and be extra understanding to your pup. Like a lot of things in life go at a pace that is right for you and your dog. That is not to say that you can not go at busy time, but I would wait to go with pup when they are ready. Oh and have fun! 😄
@@meganlovesdisneyandcrafts4780 Never too late to pick your self back up even if it feels like it. Always a light at the end of the tunnel keep your head up and i really hope things work out for you and you get back to the way you want to feel
@@meganlovesdisneyandcrafts4780 Just know that someone out there cares about you. I'm sorry that you're struggling. I hope the family situation gets better. You know, even just going for a walk when I can't get to the gym, is enough for me to calm the brain. Much love.
If trinket and I go to an appointment or to a pLce where I may more around a bit, I bring a small square mat for her :) she knows it as her "place" and knows that that command is similar to a down/stay, once she is there is isnt allowed to leave unless I need her help or she needs to alert me. It's been really helpful for us, she understands and is comfortable with her place mat, and I know I can use it for outings if we are somewhere quiet-ish, like a class at our pool or physio :) great work Jackie!
I want to get to that point with my fainting spells. I've been fainting up to 5x a day. I feel you on the chronic nausea, I take metoclompramide 4x a day (before every meal, and before bed). Edit: I'm getting tested for MS and POTS.
The university I work at has an autism service dog training program run by students. It is so it's nice to see all of the puppies in training all over the city. It's become a norm to see them training to go on the bus, in classes, stores and the gym. In a way it spreads more awareness and education to the public on service dogs.
You & Hippo are both SO amazing!! I know as a fellow chronic pain endurrer, it can be EXTREMELY difficult to commit to doing exercise, that can exacerbate the pain!! Kudos to you for powering through, knowing it can improve your endurance & give you strength in the future! I ALWAYS enjoy your videos! So inspiring! Hope you're having an AWESOME week!!!! Can't wait til you, Judd & Harlow are in your new home!! That move will probably be VERY exhausting. But, I know with all of the added activity of the move, you all are still very excited to be in your new home!! Congrats!!🙂😉💜💕💞
Curious to know how working out with machines affects your EDS? Aren't you afraid to pop your shoulders or any other joints in your body? I'm proud of the positive attitude you have & the fact that you're moving forward.
Some gyms will not allow people to drop weights because they don't have the right kind of floor. I prefer to go to ones that don't have dropping weights because of sensory sensitivity. But I guess you still need to acclimatise Harlow to it because people could still drop equipment accidentally or make a loud noise with a machine.
Love your videos you are an insperation and for my channel as well and I also have a learning disablity but high functioning and I'm at high risk of lossing my eyesight and have an anxiety disorder and your videos and your story help me keep moving forward
I was always so curious about how Harlow does in the gym with you! Unfortunately, I can't take my service dog to the gym because she's natural and is trained to alert to increased heart rate, shaky hands and shortness of breath when I would have anxiety attack. As I would work out, she would detect my heart rate increasing and she would alert to me mistaking that alert as I was doing this on purpose. I personally think its funny! She does try so hard! Goldens are the best! Harlow has inspired me to get a golden as my service dog. Keep moving forward and being an inspiration to us all!
It's great to see that you're continuing to go to the gym. You have a great attitude--go when you can and rest when you need to. Listen to your body. That's the key. Love Harlow at the gym. It's so cute!!!!
If you join a gym that has a pool, see if you can leave a dog cot in the pool area for your service dog to lay on while you swim so that they are not Laing on the chemical water the entire time. My gym lets me keep one in the filter room and gets it out each time I come to swim so that my dog isn't getting wet or covered in pool chemicals.
I love watching your vlogs they always bring a smile to my face 😄 you are so strong for someone who is chronically ill. I also wanted to know when is Izzy gonna visit again you guys are such good friends. The vlogs were so fun to watch.
Great video.......very informative. It really helped to have a visual on how you & Harlow maneuvered around the equipment as filmed by your sweet cameraman! 🤗❤️👍🏼
Really pleased and happy that you are able to get to the gym and that Harlow was really good with you. You need the strength in your arms for your wheel chair xxx
I never thought twice about bringing my dog to the gym haha. but I think that's because my earliest work-out experiences have all been at privately owned gyms (two in a row) that allowed pets during private training sessions. Obviously not crazy pets that would run everywhere, but well trained ones that could hold a down-stay on a yoga mat for an hour. So bringing my service dog felt natural and comfortable. I do the same thing and look for accepting places, and tend to avoid big chains. But that's as much for my own accommodations as my dog. I don't know about you, but I actually find the gym to be a great environment, and much better than a lot of resturants haha
I have an ESA, cat, but she is so very good at alerting me when I am going to have a seizure. My roommate also has a cat but he is not an ESA and still he alerts. My seizures are spiking with the vertigo and the doctors still don't know why. When I come out of a seizure either my cat, or his cat, have been laying on my back. I don't know if they are there through the seizure, but when I wake up one is always there. My cat gets VERY vocal just before my seizure, and she's usually very quiet.
LOVED this video!!!!! It was so helpful to see her working in the gym!! I would love to see more of her working in the gym, but only if it works for you! 💓💓
As a handler i choose not to bring my service dog with me. He is allowed with me and i wasnt judged at all and they encouraged me to bring him. Id rather him and i take an hour apart so he can wind down. Then get back and refocused and go back to work.
That nausea can kick in so quick! I don't have gastroparesis, but I have gastritis, IBS, and possible Crohn's disease and I use the orally disintegrating Zofran tablets, too. They are a GODSEND! Before using them, I would get sick so easily. So many doctors don't understand when I say that I need them because, if I have even a tiny tablet sitting in my in my stomach and not dissolving, I'm going to throw up. Insurance can also be a jerk, too, because they limit how much I can have in year. :(
This was fascinating. I’m most interested in how and why Harlow alerts to you. Have you had any fainting spells in the gym? Has Harlow prevented you from fainting? When she does alert for that, do you lie down on the floor, or what works to head off a fainting episode? What about your elevated heart rate? How high does it get, and at what point does Harlow alert, and how do you respond to this information she’s giving you? Have you ever worn a heart monitor or some kind of wrist device to give you this kind of data? I really think it’s interesting how she helps you and I’d love to see her alert in a video some time. Thanks Jacquie!
Thank you for sharing. I wish we had some small family gyms around here, but my only option was 1 of 2 chain gyms. I’m nervous about taking her with me to help me because of reactions and on the days I wish to tan I wouldn’t be able to have her with me since I’m alone. Seeing her help me 1 day & not the next always worries me about how people will react. And she does this weird random shake & with her gear on its kinda loud and I get the ugh dog hair reaction from people.

I really enjoyed this video. Just to see that with POTS you can go to the gym and work out. I do all my exercises at home. How long do your training sessions take? Mine are about 20-30 minutes.
I know you haven't had a seizure in years - which is amazing - but have you kept up with the alert with Harlow? has she ever performed that task for you before?
I am owner training my assistance dog but I’m too scared to take her to the gym because I don’t know how she will react to the treadmills and stuff like that
I have trouble understanding that dogs don't know they have hind legs. My dog functions perfectly with all 4 legs, and frequently scratches herself with her hind leg. Anyway, I'm glad you left in your feeling of nausea. Real life!
Janice Bird they know their hind legs are there... as in they scratch with them obviously use them for walking, jumping, playing, etc. but they don’t necessarily know WHERE their hind legs end up, like they don’t subconsciously know to lift them or place them in certain areas unless they are made aware of their special awareness. I don’t know if that makes sense..

20th comment woop woop, I'm still in phsyco but the gyms local to me won't allow my assistance dog even. With a trainers and doctors notes so we are having to install a home gym and have my pt coming to my home
If someone is so allergic to dogs in public places then they should be proactive to protect themselves. Jaquie or anyone with a service dog have the right to be in these public places as well
control yes, harnes/leash no. "The service animal must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered while in public places unless these devices interfere with the service animal's work or the person's disability prevents use of these devices. In that case, the person must use voice, signal, or other effective means to maintain control of the animal. For example, a person who uses a wheelchair may use a long, retractable leash to allow her service animal to pick up or retrieve items. She may not allow the dog to wander away from her and must maintain control of the dog, even if it is retrieving an item at a distance from her. Or, a returning veteran who has PTSD and has great difficulty entering unfamiliar spaces may have a dog that is trained to enter a space, check to see that no threats are there, and come back and signal that it is safe to enter. The dog must be off leash to do its job, but may be leashed at other times." www.ada.gov/regs2010/service_animal_qa.html It MIGHT be different in other countries, but this is US law..

I suck on a hard ginger candy when I go on long car rides and get very nauseous.
So if you’re not allergic, you should give it a try, it’s slightly sweet and gingery.
Hope this helps ☺️☺️

What if someone is allergic to dogs in these public areas? Do you consider that at all?
If someone is so allergic to dogs in public places then they should be proactive to protect themselves. Jaquie or anyone with a service dog have the right to be in these public places as well
There's lots of......smells
ADA requires all service dogs to be harnessed or leashed and under their handlers control at all times while in public.
control yes, harnes/leash no.
The dog must be off leash to do its job, but may be leashed at other times."

It MIGHT be different in other countries, but this is US law..

This is one thing that shouldn't be allowed.
