DH 84 Flight DUB to Cork my recording-this Flight of the Aer Lingus Dragon IOLAR (Eagle) was a Check Flight for Capt O,Shea by Capt JJ Sullivan.
Capt JJ flew the DH 84 from Dublin International Airport to the grass strip Airfield in Trim near Dublin.
This plane is in Friedrichshafen Museum on display 2013
There Capt O,Shea performed a number of Touch and Go procedures and finally, after collecting me and my camera, navigated the Twin passenger plane back to Dublin International Airport.
It was an experience for me I will not forget.
By the way, the IOLAR flew over Dublin city yesterday, 12 years after this video was taken!

      Hi Jim,
I was so lucky to know the leader of the team Capt. JJ Sullivan becaus I was invited to join the Dublin Model Flying Club as soon as I arrived in Ireland 50 years ago. Two flights at different dates and a copy given to me of the refurbishment of the plane make up the 3 postings I published.
Thank you for the visit to my ScaleJetFred TH-cam channel with 140 RC videos!

My God! What a beautiful aircraft in appearance & sound. As a pilot, I'd have to say the cockpit looks cozy, the view is exemplary, and the instrument panel is shaped perfectly. The aircraft is incredible & nostalgic. As an A&P Mechanic, maintenance has to be a dream come true. For owners who want aircraft longevity & low maintenance costs - fabric covering makes sructural inspections a piece of cake. I wish they'd still make them today. To own one has to be a proud moment. If, I ever purchased one of these aircraft - I'd probably sit in the cockpit all day & all night after the aircraft was in the hangar. What can I say - "Durable, Reliable, & Simple"

Great video Fred. I was fortunate to get a short hop in ABI ten years after this video was made! It's a testament to the great work that John Molloy and the rest of the crew that she has is still flown visiting airfields around Ireland as well as having visited the continent.

Beautiful looking machine. I think that as a teenager, my mum might have flown on one of these around Blackpool Tower in Lancashire in the 1950s - well, pre 1956. She said that for a minute the biplane was level with the very top of the tower (though at a distance!) Hope I haven't misremembered her story.

A beautiful aircraft indeed and excellent video - I felt like I had been up there for the ride! Well done and Thank You! I used to watch the paratroopers jumping from one of these at Oxford Airport (Kidlington) run by BEAS back in 1960s and Fred Mercer (Pilot) 'Fearless Fred' (!) used to try to beat the Paratroopers back down to the ground. I think that there were only two of these Dragon DH84s (as opposed to the later Rapide model) in the country even then. Is
    EL-ABI still flying?? Mark Freeman.

Thanks for your reply Fred - I was delighted to hear that beautiful aircraft is still flying - I read about much of it's incredible restoration history some time ago and somewhere else on the internet - truly a fantastic example of dedication that EI-ABI is still flying and certainly worth every bit of any effort involved (easy for me to say of course!) I remain very inspired and much tempted to make a trip across to Dublin sometime to see possibly even to see this aeroplane flying but your videos have kept me satisfied for now! Thanks again, Mark Freeman.

Very first plane I flew in , in what became Heath Row in about 1950. I remember they were flying Aero Yorks out of there at the time . Which were descended from the Aero Lancaster , but with the gun turrets removed and covered over with what looked like aluminium .

British acft really just didn't think about ergonomics. The rpm and oil pressure gauges in the engine nacelles, that must be a bloody nuisance especially at nights. Granted there isn't much room in the cockpit. It must be an acft you fly more by feel and sound than watching the gauges. It does look like a blast to fly

As a maintenance tech , wooden fuselages cant stand the abuse of NEGLECT and being tied down outside...!!! Wooden wings seem to endure better than wooden fuselages. BTW, I am building an all wood replica Spad 13 and am fully aware that this beautiful structure is like a fine piece of furniture and must never be left outside in Arizona heat or North Carolina rain showers . It’s an inside airplane only to be flown on nice sunny days...!!! PS ... I love wood aviation structures... Mosquitos...!!!

The good times, when you "feel" the planes with the bottom of your pants!!!
Pure pleasure of flying, without electronics or bloody computers...
I have flew Dragon Rapides in Africa.!!
What a pleasant a/c to fly...
I loved that cockpit and the pilot's position and
    great visibility.!!!
    Miss those ol'good times.!!!
    PS:
Those a/c that where in good shape and flying regularly, with the aeroclubs, parachutist clubs, and touring flights, were dumped and trashed by the new "governments" of "Liberated Africa", by the bloody locals...
What a waste and a pity...
They, African "leaders" and "politicians", only care about power and greed.

I am aware that this a/c was entirely fabricated of wood , but often ,I thought if the fuselage could have been light, welded steel tubing more a/c could have survived. Example; the American mfg Moth biplane done in steel tubing outlasted the wooden Moth. Then ,of course DeHaviland built a slew of steel TigerMoths which still survive today...!!!
