I believe in God and I respect those who don't believe in God, often more than those who believe. Well, the timing lines up. This lecture is in the mid to late sixties, yeah? That would put Carl in his thirties, well into his scientific career. And there is evidence to say that they were aware of one another's work.
I also thought it was interesting how they focused on that actor so intently, as if it were a deliberate nod to his importance in some way.
Carl Sagan writes about watching Hawking's induction into the Royal Society in his 1988 introduction to A Brief History of the Universe:

You ask your god for things to happen-sometimes they do, sometimes not. Why? If the things your god doesn’t want to happen won’t happen, then why ask for anything in the first place? Everything that’s going to happen is going to happen regardless of whether you want it to or not. Prayer is useless, even if your god is real.
