When I was growing up, in the 80s and 90s, no told my family what the diagnostic criteria was for Autism. They knew I had special needs, but they knew nothing else. I remember having Occupational Therapy, Adaptive P.E., and Speech Therapy. By the time I reached high school, I still had Adaptive P.E., but I no longer had Occupational Therapy or Speech Therapy. When I attended community college, I still needed extra help in school. I either had to have tutoring or test accommodations, such as extra time on tests, the use of a computer, for essay tests, etc. However, the experience wasn't always so positive. In fact, the Learning Disabilities Coordinator would just leave me in the testing room, perform his usual tasks, and didn't bother to check on me. When my mother came to pick me up from school, she'd get worried and come to check on me. By the time I was done, I was exhausted! I don't remember when, but at some point, I was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder-- Not Otherwise Specified). In 2000, I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and OCD, in my early 20s. When I started attending a four-year-university, in the late 2000s, I was still having the usual testing accommodations, but again, the experience wasn't always positive. I used to get terrible stomachaches, to the point of having diarrhea, during tests, so I'd excuse myself to use the bathroom. When I'd return, to attempt to complete the test, the Learning Disabilities Coordinator told me my time was up. I told her I wasn't feeling well, and I'd ask for more time, but she didn't allow it. I still managed to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Sociology, with Honors. I've had many different doctors, therapists, and psychiatrists, over the years. I've been on different medications and worked with different agencies. Then, more recently, my current therapist told me that my Asperger's diagnosis was outdated, because it's currently known as autism spectrum disorder. She also did an OCD screening and told me that I no longer fit the criteria. She also told me that the PDD-NOS diagnosis was outdated and had to remove it. Those early diagnoses are crucial. Don't wait too long, to get your children diagnosed.
If you rewatch one of the more recent videos on the Autism Family TH-cam channel where Connor (I think) is playing the piano you can hear Simon say something like “I don’t want this!” in the background. It’s subtle but it’s there. You may need to put on headphones and turn up the volume to hear it. Based on that it looks like Simon has been able to express his feelings in this way for a number of months at least. I forget exactly when that video was uploaded.
0:09 by "some" kids with adhd what do you mean because i was reading comments and i found one of you saying that Benson also i have autism anxiety tics and selective mutism and i am in a special school and my therapist who works in my school told me there are kids mainly with autism adhd or both and some more quiet kids (just like me) and my school is like kind of chaos because i will literally hear kids screaming and shouting sometimes its funny sometimes its annoying
Not all our older kids are comfortable with us naming them with ADHD online, but we have two kids with ADHD that don't have Autism. Thanks for sharing about your school. I am sure that is challenging at times.
The right hemisphere condition that I have used to be considered a form of ADD or ADHD in either DSM-3 TR or DSM 4 (I forget which one). By the 2000s it became known that a person can have this either with or without ADD or ADHD. This is how I learned that even though I used to think that I might have ADD I probably don’t.
I wonder if Ezra has seasonal allergies and postnasal drip. I have these and my nose tends to run pretty frequently (especially in the Spring and in the Autumn).
Hearing about “please and thank you” reminds me that in French if you say “Merci” by itself when someone offers you something it actually means “No thank you”. If you are accepting something it is necessary to say “Oui, Merci!” to avoid confusion. I learned this when I was in France for a year back in the late 1990s. This shows that every culture has its own conventions when it comes to etiquette and they can be confusing when a person first learns them. At the time this reminded me of when I was learning the rules of etiquette that are popular here in the States. For me it was a rather long process. Even in High School I continued to struggle with it. By college it was less of a struggle. Being on the spectrum probably had some effect on this in my case. As always, everyone is unique.
Some days I'll be super excited for a change, but other days I'll become anxious over it. A great example is that on Thursdays I have to have lunch way earlier than other days, and it makes me upset because I don't like how early I have to eat lunch, and I'd rather eat lunch around the normal time. However, I still enjoy how I have different schedules on Wednesday and Thursday because the same schedule gets rather boring, and I enjoy the switch up. When it comes to communication, I am very fluxuating in what I say, and don't have much trouble. However, I will oftentimes repeat a statement even if I've already said it once, twice, or even more than that. My thoughts are not linear at all, but I'll oftentimes talk about the same things, just very differently. I do have some things I say regularly, though, but most are just small things related to my hyperfixation on Splatoon (ex. Booyah in an excited moment, cod replacing god) Motivation? Oh, yeah, I do kinda act like the most stereotypical ADHD kid out there... But there are still days where I have great motivation and can just get things done without struggle. I'm saying all of this, I don't have a professional diagnosis, and I also believe I may have ADHD and Autism. Yes, I have a Splatoon hyperfixation. Do you think the 1,800+ hours are for nothing?
ADHD and autism here and I understand and do both sides aspecilly with routine and change I hate it it throws of my hole day and makes me sad and angry but I'm excited to do something else and do something different. I say my brain has 2 sides and it's always arguing. My sons the same but waiting to be tested xxx
im watching this to calm down cus my dog just got put down :( she had a stroke last night and then we took her to the vet and found out the bottom half of her body couldent move or function i miss her alot
I have both and the fact that they can at times be opposite is quite hard to deal with. I used to spend a lot of time trying to figure out which one was causing an issue but eventually realized that ultimately the root cause (autism or ADHD) isn't the important thing to know but rather mitigate / manage the "trait" was the important thing regardless of the root cause (i.e if sensory overloaded it don't matter whether it was because of autism or ADHD but impor5tant that I get out of the situation and mitigate it in the future).
I dont really mind change in routine outside of school but in school if there is a room change that i wasn't expecting it really throws me of. I don't know what my communication is like i don't really notice. I like challenges but also if it is too hard i just give up. I don't think i have had a shut down yet even though i am a high masking autistic female. I am on the waiting list for autism but i also think i have inattentive ADHD.
I have autism and ADHD and I really struggle with handling certain changes even if they’re excited like when I was 12 years old I was surprised by my parents with a trip to Universal Studios for spring break and at first I was extremely upset because I was planning to just stay home and do activities where I lived, on the other hand there are also some things that I want to always be different like for example not having the same meal any days in a row (I’m ok with leftovers just not directly after) Those are some examples. So basically I really like and want to do different activities different days but I also want some of my routines to stay the same or else I get upset. Also for an Idea for another video: Autism representation in children’s shows.
I have issues in those categories i have difficulty socializing and i have issues with communication like talking and other forms of communication and i do Repetitive behavior and interest like video games ive been playing video games since i was either 8 or younger and yes i stim i flap my hands and jump up and down when i get excited
Fellow ADHD Auspie, the contradictions are intense and constant and often i feel both at the same time and that can lead to meltdowns because its just too much ...I both love change but it also makes me really anxious 😅 if I've planned something and the plans change I will loose my mind but if someone else has planned it I find it easier to go with it , it really depends. Also different days are different sometimes I need or struggle with different things. I also have combined ADHD so both Inattentive and hyperactive kind. But yeah inattentive ADHD kids are rarely hyperactive. I also even though I'm both have basically ADHD motivation behaviour , but I also have demand avoidance so the motivation has to be from me like I have to desire to do it, if someone asks me to even if I was about to do it I loose all desire and get agitated for no reason what so ever 😅
I have ADHD and I am a kid and I struggle because I always wanna have to do something always wanna do something but when you think you’re not playing for me to do something I can’t do it even though I really want to when I can’t think of anything else I get distracted by everything I might say that I don’t want something but I find out something that I wanna do but then I don’t wanna do it anymore and I want to do the thing that I didn’t want to do it’s crazy
I have autism and also ADHD and ADD and sometimes have the mind of a 12 year old back in 1997 and its a long story. when I was 8 years old my sister and I was going to a camp fire program at Montezuma but on the first day i had a hard time and i also learn that i had add and adhd at that time. the hard thing for me at camp was i push my sister into a tire thing by mistake and it was hard for me to talk and the camp fire did not understand about add and adhd. and after i moved from Montezuma to Monte vista in 1996 i learn that i had autism when i was 11 years old on july 16 1996. I had trouble Social with people when i was at a new school back in 1996 sometimes it was hard to express myself at times. I also learn that i have sensory issues with loud sounds even like fire drills that happen in schools.
As someone who has adhd and potential autism i have a hard time cleaning because to my adhd brain it's boring and not fun but my potential autism brain doesn't want to skip routine because I'll get upset and yes what usually happens before my meltdown is ill start having panic attacks which will cause me to have autism meltdown and other time but rarely I'll get a meltdown if I get to excited
I consider myself a triple threat as not only am I AuDHD (alternate way of saying someone has autism and adhd) but I also have bipolar disorder which has lots of overlap with my emotion regulation trouble (which only got better when I got put on a mood stabilizer). I feel like in my case my AuDHD can sometimes overpower the other, resulting in the underpowered one being more covert or masked.

Hello I'm new to your channel and i love your videos they are so helpful! Of course I was wondering if i could get your opinion on my Son Ok my Son just turned 3 and he has a speech delay every few months i could probably get a word out of him lol be also has started babbling alot sometimes its at us other times its to himself, but the parts that are confusing for me are he does make eye contact like constantly he will even move his head to make sure i look at him. He can eat on his own hes very good with utensils i can even get him to pick up his toys from time to time lol He does like to spin around and flap his arms and clap his hands he also does what your son does where he will grab my hand and take me to whatever he wants though sometimes if i sit with him and ask him to choose he usually will. He doesn't seem to have any sensory issues besides he loves playing with my hair or rubbing silky tags that are on his stuffed animals. He loves cars anything with wheels lol he also loves going out especially to the park he doesn't necessarily engage with kids, but he definitely likes to watch them play he will even clap while watching, but then eventually wants to play with his ball in the grass next to the playground. He is shy and i know he has a bit of a hard time focusing as well so somedays he responds to his name pretty quick and other days i dont exist lol my husband thinks he may have ADHD which is possible cause my husband has it and so does my Dad and 2 of my siblings, but im just curious on your take because my sister has a degree in child psychology and she tells me his behaviors are interesting and somedays she cannot read him lol i do plan on taking him to a speech therapist, but i was wondering your opinion on this sorry this is all over the place its been consuming me lately since he just turned 3 and its making me feel like a terrible Mom like im not teaching him correctly and also we just started potty training and he absolutely hates it Thank you so much for these videos and taking the time to read this YHVH bless you ❤
Great questions! Your son sounds a little bit like Simon, though we are not doctors who can diagnose a child with autism. For Simon we had a clinical psychologist do an assessment called the ADOS-2 assessment.❤
@@7Aheadfamily thank you so much! and yes I guess I just wanted an opinion from a parents point of view ☺️ thank you for the info! And the kind words ❤️
When i was diagnosed with level 1 Autism in July 2024 , I asked my psychologist if she thinks i have ADHD & she said no because of my cognitive / behavior function mainly lining up with ASD not ADHD . Its very hard for me to live with autism and be enrolled in a toxic high school near Memphis TN with 99.9% rude / melicious students , few teachers & few administrators for the past 3 years since im now a 12th Grader . When i dont mask my ASD the students think of me as special and most times says comments to me saying im Special ED and i should be in that class along with several tons of negative deragratory remarks from those 99.9% rude students . The school says if i have one more o u t b u r s t i will token away to a m e n t a l institution ( basically giving me harsh disciplinary measures / consequences ) . Do you believe my school is doing me wrong / dodging my disability ?
I just had a babygirl 7-22-2024, I’m curious about a few things with her and if it may be Autistic or not. I know at 2 months they can’t diagnose or test and here where we live they won’t🥺
She does this flick thing with her tongue when eating or basically almost done. I was informed it could be a sign of autism. She also does focus on objects for periods at a time, She may or may not look at you when you talk to her she does smile she does talk back and make baby. Sounds when you show her attention she loves attention. She’s very alert for her age. She recently start doing the same with her wrist where she will flick her wrist almost like if she’s riding a motorcycle or something but she’s only two months old.🤷🏽♀️😩 Any advice or input would be great. I’m not familiar with any of this and I just wanna make sure she’s OK.
Great question! You can be diagnosed at the age of 18 months or older but for a more reliable diagnosis it would be closer to two years old. We have also done two videos of the signs of autism in babies😊 th-cam.com/video/bNa7-K_mUzs/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/_U1G1d0fWU8/w-d-xo.html
Great question! A child that has both Autism and Adhd has an intense focus on hobbies and interests, or experience challenges socializing with neurotypical people. Hope this helps❤
I should do a whole video on that. One example, I have a difficult time getting myself to simply sit at my desk, so I will have motivators at my desk like a snack drawer and a candle I can light and LED lights I can turn on and pick what color I want. I have a certain notebook that I use to write what I need to accomplish. I will list off things I’ve already done to give myself a sense of accomplishment and that will give me motivation. Small things like that give me enough dopamine to get myself in my chair and turn on my computer to work. This type of set up is called scaffolding. It looks different for different people but can be very helpful when you find out what motivates you, you treat yourself, you set up the house and work space a strategic way with less distractions and reminders, and ways to get your out of a low. I also find that making a day feeling less “routine-like” helps me a lot. ❤️ -Holly
Simon can actually go potty all by himself, so he just leaves the room and goes into the bathroom by himself. Ezra will come grab my hand and lead me to the bathroom.

He is shy and i know he has a bit of a hard time focusing as well so somedays he responds to his name pretty quick and other days i dont exist lol my husband thinks he may have ADHD which is possible cause my husband has it and so does my Dad and 2 of my siblings, but im just curious on your take because my sister has a degree in child psychology and she tells me his behaviors are interesting and somedays she cannot read him lol i do plan on taking him to a speech therapist, but i was wondering your opinion on this sorry this is all over the place its been consuming me lately since he just turned 3 and its making me feel like a terrible Mom like im not teaching him correctly and also we just started potty training and he absolutely hates it
Thank you so much for these videos and taking the time to read this YHVH bless you ❤

Great questions! Your son sounds a little bit like Simon, though we are not doctors who can diagnose a child with autism. For Simon we had a clinical psychologist do an assessment called the ADOS-2 assessment.❤
You are not a terrible mom, you are an amazing mom who wants her child to grow and live happily😊😊
@@7Aheadfamily thank you so much! and yes I guess I just wanted an opinion from a parents point of view ☺️ thank you for the info! And the kind words ❤️
Of course!❤❤❤

It kept glitching and skipping parts
We are very sorry that people are being so mean to you❤ Lots of love from us here at 7-Ahead💕💕
We have also done two videos of the signs of autism in babies😊

My 5 year old son only sings but doesn't communicate with people, He swings his hands, rocks, and... could that be austim plus ADHD?
Great question! A child that has both Autism and Adhd has an intense focus on hobbies and interests, or experience challenges socializing with neurotypical people. Hope this helps❤
i have level 2 autism and ADHD
Thank you for sharing💕
I was just curious how you deal with the ADHD side of things without the autism component.
❤️ -Holly

How does Simon indicate he has to go to potty?
Simon can actually go potty all by himself, so he just leaves the room and goes into the bathroom by himself. Ezra will come grab my hand and lead me to the bathroom.
I’m a level one too

Why have so many children?
Children are a blessing and why not her children all looked well taken care of and loved
@lt9074 Children are a blessing , Yes, they are all loved and taken care of .However, they will all face many challenges. It's not about what people want .. why bring children in the world to suffer., its not a blessing for them.
