There's a bit more to in in the real aircraft... as in, years and years of training :) I'm also sure that DCS leaves out anything that's classified. To start completely from cold, the real aircraft probably requires a security code that's set by the ground crew and is given only to the pilot when he climbs in. You're right for the most part. The Hornet has both 1 and 2 seaters; F/A-18C is a single, the F/A-18D is a double...Same for the Super Hornets; F/A-18E is a single, the F/A-18F is a double. Most of the two-seat aircraft are for training purposes, but it's really not limited from anything to my knowledge. Beautiful Aircraft!
I love the Hornet (tried in 1998 to fly one and failed on medical history), but it is so awesome. I actually like the side stick configuration of the F-16 and the F-35 more than the central position.
Look up EA-F18 Growler fighter jet. I think that is what we need more than the F-35. They are planning of totally redesigning it because of the helmet cables and the glitches for the new hud. They have a huge blindspot behind them and where do guns face on an a/c... they will get shoot down in a dogfight as soon as the enemy is behind. It is a great aircraft, but for short term, look for alternatives is my opinion :)
The planes are old but at least they’ve been upgraded with newer avionics and color MFDs. The big thing that was missing was a modern radar but half of the fleet is slated to receive new AESA radars. Plus there is also a buy of the latest AIM-9X Blk 2 Sidewinder missiles which will further increase the lethality of the Hornet.
Here in the UK it makes the newspapers and sometimes the news channels, they dont fly right into the airspace but they buzz it just staying outside and no more, this requires the RAF to scramble to escort them away. However there have been incidents in Canada when they fly right into their airspace.

I used to not really respect the RCAF as much as I should have...but they did a CF-18 demo at an airshow and flat out embarrassed all the US pilots! The dirty roll, right IMMEDIATELY after takeoff rotation at like 20ft AGL while the gear was still retracting looked soo dangerous. Overall he was just so aggressive it actually scared some people. Haha, yes. once you get to know them it's really simple. The buttons are usually grouped in categories, so it's easier to remember as you keep doing it. I mean the F16 for example has a much more complex cockpit than the F18, which adds to the overall workload that the pilot has to go through during complex maneuvers. Which is exactly what they are trying to avoid nowadays with new fighters.

"Ready to go, like on 9/11" the pilot says. That's odd, as NORAD took over an hour to even respond, with operators even unsure of whether it was the drill mimicking the events of 9/11 that was taking place that morning or a real live attack that they were responding to. Who told Norad to stand down?
