I'm enjoying this video but haven't gotten through the whole thing yet. I had to laugh when you said about the First Engine card that you don't know where another seller got the keywords "cow catcher". A cow catcher is the pointed grille thing on the front of the engine. It was literally designed to catch cows, or other objects, that were on the track and push them out of the way. 😂
Yeah one thing I realized about these longer videos is sometimes I say things that sound really dumb in hindsight 😂 of course it’s to get cows off the tracks
You are very helpful! 1st: I went to my first Postcard event in Saugerties NY. Thanks to your calendar on the Mailseum website. Can't wait to go to the next one. 2nd: This video is helping price the RPPCs that I got at the show. I bought some that have no dates or any other info, so it is research time! Thanks again.
The whalemen is an interesting one indeed. The first one was with the whaling fleet that went to the Indian ocean, and his time was probably at the height of the industry, though he was out for only 5 years (two or three voyages?) The second, however, was in both the Atlantic and also the Bering Strait -- which is significant. He was whaling at the start of the Civil War, which destroyed the whaling industry as the South sent raiders to destroy the New England whaling fleet. He may have missed it as he ended in 1861. The CSS Shenandoah sank a good number of the whalers in the Bering Strait later in the war -- and I think even after Appomattox. What a neat find! A piece of history.
Given that another of the postcards had McGregor with his house in 1912 at 21.51, I'm guessing he was fibbing about his age (though I cannot call up that card). One is tempted to look him up in the censuses from 1880 and 1900. Also: Top hats were almost always silk, and worn by the wealthier. They replaced the beaver hats of the 19th century. Think of the Monopoly character -- or J. P. Morgan. The others are bowlers, and those are far more "everyday." The hats were actually quite important symbols of status.
I think I’ve mentioned them briefly but don’t have a full video. Postcards only required one cent stamps for a long time, so the vast, vast majority of stamps on postcards are basically worthless. If you see a stamp on the back you don’t recognize in a higher denomination, look it up. Otherwise, the chances of a common one cent stamp being worth more is maybe one in a billion or so (something to do with the number of perforations on the edge).
eBay Standard Envelope is significantly cheaper for postcards under $20, so I use that when I can. For more expensive postcards I do use First Class (now Ground Advantage).
WOW… This is very helpful information. I’ve not started selling postcards yet, but I’d like to… I like seeing what some of the other data sources can provide as well as your screen arrangement workspace. I know your using an Apple computer, but what is the black section on the left side. I don’t see any tabs across the top or perhaps you’ve cropped that out… Looks like you’re using Google Drive as well, could you explain how you utilize it… Think I’ll pick this up again tomorrow as it’s getting late.
The left side is where the tabs are! I haven’t cropped anything, I just use this browser called Arc that looks a little different. I usually don’t use Google Drive, I just used it for this video so I could have the postcard images in my browser - normally I have two monitors and have them up on a separate screen. Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@mailseum it may sound ridiculous but until you have two monitors and 3rd monitor flip the other way vertically. Use your system that way for a while it's really not an Overkill there's a lot of times you could use three different screens most decent graphic cards are able to do this in addition to that I often split the main big monitor right in front of me into two and actually use four it doesn't even cost that much because most of us go to these garage sales estate sales you can find cheap/free monitors all the time. Spin the money get a really good one right in front of you and use cheap ones on the side that's all you need
Hi Daniel. Great video as always. Any chance of you doing a video talking about shipping postcards through the eBay International shipping program? I'm considering opening up my business globally and need some insight. Right now, it appears you cannot send postcards to their "hub" in Kentucky via the eBay Standard Envelope system because the tracking is sometimes unreliable, so I was wondering how you do it and still are able to keep your costs down yet still provide tracking.
Great and informative video! For Worthpoint, I'm assuming that you are using the paid version to do your searches? I don't know too much about the site, though - do they list all eBay sales, or just sales of certain types of items?
They only do collectibles so they won’t have things like electronics or consumer goods or stuff. I do use the lower tier of the paid version which is $28.99 per month currently.
If I see an interesting postmark I’ll look it up to see if the town is still around or how long they used the particular cancel if it’s a doane…but I can’t say I’ve ever gotten more money because of the cancel
Yeah they sell! I’d say if it’s a unique view it can sell well, but if it’s the same view you can find on a standard sized postcard most collectors will prefer the standard sized postcard because they are much easier to store.
I have really been waiting for a new video from Mailseium! This is easily one of my favorite postcard channels! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Randy! I recently moved so I missed a week but a lot of good videos coming!

I learned something new today. Thanks for sharing that information.
That makes so much sense! Learned something today as well.

Always a pleasant visit when I go to the Mailseum. Thanks.

I live 5 minutes from Londonderry NH! That was fun. Do you find Worth point is worth the money?
Skurfan, my arch nemesis! We've had a few run ins
i like this style, I learn a lot. Do you have a video on postcard stamps?

You're a smart seller. May I ask why not use media / first class for shipping?

I use eBay International Shipping and it works great! As long as you can ship within the states fine you won’t have a problem with EIS.
Teddy bear refers to President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, and his incident with a black bear, so it makes sense.

There is a book price guide for boy scout collectibles.
Hey Daniel, or anyone really, how do you guys do with DPOs? Or do you just ignore them?

Believe it or not, Siasconset is just pronounced Sconset 😅 it’s a village on Nantucket
