This happened today: I went to cordon to visit the loner base near the bridge. It was night time, and stalkers were squatting beside a campfire. Beside them was a dead loner. I dragged the corpse near the guitarist, and at that time he started to play "Peaceful Ending". When that happened, I actually thought they were paying tribute to their fallen comrade. such is life in the zone.
The People Soup mod has a playable guitar and harmonica that equip in the weapon slots. I will never forget the moment when I went to pull out my rifle to shoot some army guys and started playing guitar instead...

I'm sorry the my behind English ( Im russian) Born in Russia, and easier for me to feel this atmosphere. So glad that it may feel the same at all the other people who were not born in the post-Soviet territory. It's nice when there are people who love the game and abroad.

Sometimes I play Stalker. Then I forget about it for a few months and then I feel sudden urge to go back. Stalker can leave the Zone, but the Zone won't leave stalker.
I’m here to remember my father. He died at age 57, just 2 weeks away from his 58th birthday. Thing is, I never really appreciated him. He would always be at work, doing truck deliveries and when he came back home, he would either go sleep, watch TV or play Stalker. I rarely ever talked with him or spent time with him but deep down, I know he cared for me and loved me as his son. Now that he’s gone, I feel like a part of my life has gone with him. The only thing I have left of his memory was his last Stalker play through which I sometimes log into and roam around. I just feel awful at the fact before he passed, he never knew that I cared for him and loved him.
I started playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. after completing the Metro games this month. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about it. Best decision of my life. I look forward to exploring more of The Zone soon.

well this is the nuclear apocalypse, so the guitar is probably broken and without any method of repair. There are no guitar teachers (at least most of them forgot or are dead) the musician has to resort to memory. The ambience is the result of a campfire.
In my country there was this gaming magazine that came with a copy of a game attached to it, generally the games were two or three years old but since my pc was subpar at best, I would buy an issue every month, one day, out came the magazine with a copy of stalker:clear sky attached to it, since there was nothing else, I bought it thinking it was gonna be a resident evil-esque horror game I was wrong in the best kind of way. that game made me go places man it was like cocaine mixed with high quality craft beer in a syringe, only it didnt kill me by using it, words are not enough to describe how fucking awesome this game was

I don't know how many people are even aware, but the Stalker games were inspired by a book called Roadside Picnic. I highly advise giving it a read. That book was adapted into a movie, called Stalker.
I started playing STALKER recently and seeing the comments here from late as 4 years ago seems like old stories of old stalkers in the Zone. My journey only has started.
I absolutely adore Stalker. Not because of its gameplay, not even because of its atmosphere. It is one of _very_ few videogames that are cult classics all over the world despite showing a slice of a single culture. For everyone who didn't get to live in post-Soviet Russia, i can tell you this game is depressing, but honest. Post-Soviet Russia wasn't quite about survival, but about stoicism afore the bleakness and cruelty and indifference of the world and everyone around you. It's not the angsty "nobody understands how bad I have it" but the Dostoyevskian "everyone is just as miserable as you are, and you don't see them complaining". It's about the subtle difference of the same person giving you their last piece of bread and robbing you blind. Not in the sense of "who helps you can also hurt you" but in the sense of "if things were a little different, your best friend would be your worst enemy". It's about you being terrified of people who are meant to defend you. It's about you distancing yourself from the world just enough so you can keep caring for the few people you hold dear. I have no idea why Stalker became a cult classic anywhere outside of post-Soviet countries, but I'm very glad it did. If we were to meet in the nineties, I'd be very likely to rob you blind just because you're someone I don't know. But since I haven't done that yet, the fire is warm and you can have the guitar if you play.

I think it's something we fear and that's why people are fascinated by it. Its a possible response to certain circumstances but it's not the only one. Its one that seems to be more valid when you view the world nihistically but which is clearly not the better choice when compared to the hopeful ways people are capable of responding. In some of the worst circumstances, like in the concentration camps, people showed that we can respond and pull through in much better ways than how nihlism might suggest is necessary. Same can be said of people after the nuclear bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, we can respond much better than simply with selfish distrust

One of the best part of the game is just sitting by the campfire, chill out, listen to the stalkers talking and this. I can just sit there for hour. Too bad the Stalkers don't pull out a guitar often like SoC in CoP.
Fuck... so many feels. Makes me want to go back to the zone again.. But I've played them all to death, all possible ways.. mods.. addons.. And still, there will never be a game quite like it. Never! And maybe its good that they arent making a Stalker 2.. Because with how the game industry looks today, it would probably be shit :( I miss the zone.

I've first played stalker after my dad gave me his favorite sci-fi book and asked me to read it. It was Roadside Picnic. Then we saw Stalker (the movie) together. Then I played STALKER. Then I started watching Boris. That made me repeat the whole process. Hell, i'm reading Roadside Picnic for the third time now while playing Misery.
Damn, it was so looong ago. I remember that in 2006 I bought a new PC and Stalker had its premiere early 2007. Bloody hell, so many nights spent in the Zone. Worth it.
I remember when I first played S.T.A.L.K.E.R SOC. I remember I would always raided the military checkpoint right of the rookie camp with my trusty makarov and sawed off. Though I did get my ass handed to me, I always had a smile on my face when I did successfully clear the place because of how overpowered I was in the beginning of the game.
We are almost at 2023 and still after all these years i continued replaying all the Stalker games over and over again, truly a masterpiece, i started playing stalker when i saw this video back in 2010 and the music just amazed me
I remember when i played Shadow of Chernobyl in my youth, drunk ass hell with my stereo on full with loud bass. I was fucking there man, i was in the fucking zone of Chernobyl, drunk as hell. My head was spinning around and around, completly immersed in the game. I whould give anything to have the fresh gaming of this game back, fuckin tits this game was and is. This game have frigging made me want to visit the zone in real life, and i will, with my dad,next year aka 2017, Dad told me about the day in 86, and he knows a really fucking much about the event, if the wind blew the other way, things could get a really more fucked up, but it was fate that changed the wind that day. And the fucking fish, it was posioned with radiation, and it still may be, after 30 years after the incident. Fun part, i was born 4 years and almost four months later, and i want to go there, i don't want to go to a fucking paradise, i want to go to the zone, the place has so much fucking history, and i fucking love that, fuck Hiroshima, Chernobyl/Pripyat is the place. 26th of April, 1986, never forget.
What I've seen from pictures the zone is a freaking paradise. Nature have reclaimed the whole place, and not a soul to be seen. I think you are a stalker mate, "one of those misfits who are compelled, in spite of the extreme danger, to venture illegally into the Zone"

Bruno Giao I'm aware of what fallout new Vegas is as i have played it, I'm just saying that S.T.A.L.K.E.R feels a lot more post-apocalyptic than new Vegas does
theenglishtanker Well, New Vegas is intended to be post-post-apocalyptic, which makes sense given that it’s been 204 years since the apocalypse. However, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is set 6 years after a nuclear accident, which explains its general atmosphere. (Also, New Vegas wasn’t directly hit with nuclear bombs-the Zone was.)
@Slavic there are no aliens in the games, only in the book and the movie. In the games, the first incident happened in 1986, followed by a second one in 2006. Shadow of Chernobyl takes place in 2012.
no one because the 2 series are nothing alike and just because they look somewhat similar settings wise makes no sense why you would compared the 2. Comparing stalker to fallout is like comparing skyrim to witcher 3. people's only point for comparing the 2 series is the similar setting they're in and that they need the dopamine rush from saying one game is superior to the other (isn't elitism great).
So today is my first day playing through stalker SOC, and im in love. This game is fucking amazing and all the music is to. Im so fucking mad i missed out on this as a kid but so happy i can experience it now

Started a new game in call of pripyat. Starting good, playing some secondary quests, found a cool one where you have to look for a stash in a car that got stuck in a crumbling near a gas station. It's pitch dark, I'm at the gas station, killed a few wandering dogs, and I found that huge and deep crack in the ground. And the car was down there. I spot some ways to go down the crack and thus I engage myself in the perilous descent. I reached the car without hurting myself, got the loot and then I was halted by that one question : how do I go back to the surface? I don't have any torchlight or whatever and it's pitch dark. I spot in the darkness a tiny weeny tunnel cave, thought it might be a good idea to explore it in search of an exit. Downside is that it was full of weird feral-zombie stalkers ready to kick my ass with their adidas shoes and lurking in the dark, I was aimlessly shooting at the roaring shadows till they got me. It was my first time dying in the game and I almost shat myself
it's been 14 years since this video was posted, and i only have almost a year since i played stalker for the first time. the feeling i felt listening to this it's like i'm feeling something nostalgic, don't know how to describe it but it's a mix of melancholy and happiness, the feeling as i ever lived that before. as our fellow comrade stalker said in a comment below: "You can take a Stalker out of the Zone, but you can never take the Zone out of a Stalker."; man, i felt that hard, gotta say =') for those new in the game: good hunting, stalker!
Beautiful, how the songs symbolize different things. Against the ionized odds sounds like a track of empowerment, while Kordon sounds like a happy ending
As a kid I never really cared about the campfires. That was until I was passing by and saw a lone stalker taking out his guitar. My charakter didn't even move an inch until he putted it back. I didn't care about my mission I was rushing. Just standing there. Listening to the beautiful sounds. I'm literally crying of my good memories :)
Listening to this in the middle of one of the greatest shitstorms in my life. I would give anything just to be a stalker. There would be no people in the Zone. Just stalkers. I could imagine listening to this next to a campfire with comrade stalkers and no one would see my tears behind my gas mask.
@Aleks Stanislavov comrade, I appreciate you asking. Life has had its ups and downs. Past few years haven't been easy, but the good things keep me going. It becomes easier to deal with hardship with experience.
What I love about this guitar track is how honest and raw it is: you can often hear the buzz of a string that's not properly pressed, showing you how these men aren't professional guitar players, just STALKERS trying to survive. They're making music for the comfort of their souls, not as an actual performance. Another neat thing is how these songs are mostly played with basic, open chords like Am or Em. There is no extravagant embellishment going on in this music, just people making music from what they know.
This is what I love about STALKER. They know they'll die horrible deaths but yet they gather around the campfire to listen a fellow stalker play these melancholic songs as if the heavens were ready to fall.
the first track was the first guitar song i head while traveling across the zone my first journey was in stalker clear skys i have a fond place for clear skys it is my fav stalker game (along with clear sky complete mod ts fucking bomb diggity ) but yes i remember becoming a stalker in the zone i was horrid sprinting into anomalies and not packing well for trips and missions not knowing small details about the zone that can help ones survival its been about 2 years i mostly play anomaly mod now because its amazing but i have learned much since then about all the games and the zone has a place special in my heart despite it being a agonizing deadly place no mad would dare to go expect us stalkers live well my fellow stalkers and watch your backs in the zone
You loved this game, then go further and swallow the book "Roadside picnic" - the parent of the game. "Happiness!... For everybody!… Free!… As much as you want!… " :' ' '(
The zone may be an unforgiving hell, but sitting by a group of loners enjoying some cossacks and listening to one of their beautiful tunes, with the only illumination being from a warm campfire, really makes it feel like there is something worth more than artifacts or money.

I absolutely adore Stalker. Not because of its gameplay, not even because of its atmosphere. It is one of _very_ few videogames that are cult classics all over the world despite showing a slice of a single culture.
For everyone who didn't get to live in post-Soviet Russia, i can tell you this game is depressing, but honest. Post-Soviet Russia wasn't quite about survival, but about stoicism afore the bleakness and cruelty and indifference of the world and everyone around you. It's not the angsty "nobody understands how bad I have it" but the Dostoyevskian "everyone is just as miserable as you are, and you don't see them complaining". It's about the subtle difference of the same person giving you their last piece of bread and robbing you blind. Not in the sense of "who helps you can also hurt you" but in the sense of "if things were a little different, your best friend would be your worst enemy". It's about you being terrified of people who are meant to defend you. It's about you distancing yourself from the world just enough so you can keep caring for the few people you hold dear.
I have no idea why Stalker became a cult classic anywhere outside of post-Soviet countries, but I'm very glad it did. If we were to meet in the nineties, I'd be very likely to rob you blind just because you're someone I don't know. But since I haven't done that yet, the fire is warm and you can have the guitar if you play.

People know this in their heart but can't accept the nihilism inherit in it & so they cover it behind things like moral, religion, ideology etc. so when any art/literature expose these suppressed feelings it tends to get global praise.

I think it's something we fear and that's why people are fascinated by it. Its a possible response to certain circumstances but it's not the only one. Its one that seems to be more valid when you view the world nihistically but which is clearly not the better choice when compared to the hopeful ways people are capable of responding. In some of the worst circumstances, like in the concentration camps, people showed that we can respond and pull through in much better ways than how nihlism might suggest is necessary. Same can be said of people after the nuclear bombings in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, we can respond much better than simply with selfish distrust

One of the best part of the game is just sitting by the campfire, chill out, listen to the stalkers talking and this. I can just sit there for hour. Too bad the Stalkers don't pull out a guitar often like SoC in CoP.

I've first played stalker after my dad gave me his favorite sci-fi book and asked me to read it. It was Roadside Picnic. Then we saw Stalker (the movie) together. Then I played STALKER.
Then I started watching Boris. That made me repeat the whole process. Hell, i'm reading Roadside Picnic for the third time now while playing Misery.
I got Roadside Picnic. Started it with low expectations (don't know why). Finished it the same day I started and it felt so good.

Damn, it was so looong ago. I remember that in 2006 I bought a new PC and Stalker had its premiere early 2007. Bloody hell, so many nights spent in the Zone. Worth it.
I remember when I first played S.T.A.L.K.E.R SOC. I remember I would always raided the military checkpoint right of the rookie camp with my trusty makarov and sawed off. Though I did get my ass handed to me, I always had a smile on my face when I did successfully clear the place because of how overpowered I was in the beginning of the game.

We are almost at 2023 and still after all these years i continued replaying all the Stalker games over and over again, truly a masterpiece, i started playing stalker when i saw this video back in 2010 and the music just amazed me
I remember when i played Shadow of Chernobyl in my youth, drunk ass hell with my stereo on full with loud bass.
I was fucking there man, i was in the fucking zone of Chernobyl, drunk as hell.
My head was spinning around and around, completly immersed in the game.
I whould give anything to have the fresh gaming of this game back, fuckin tits this game was and is.
This game have frigging made me want to visit the zone in real life, and i will, with my dad,next year aka 2017,
Dad told me about the day in 86, and he knows a really fucking much about the event, if the wind blew the other way, things could get a really more fucked up, but it was fate that changed the wind that day. And the fucking fish, it was posioned with radiation, and it still may be, after 30 years after the incident.
Fun part, i was born 4 years and almost four months later, and i want to go there, i don't want to go to a fucking paradise, i want to go to the zone, the place has so much fucking history, and i fucking love that, fuck Hiroshima, Chernobyl/Pripyat is the place.

However, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is set 6 years after a nuclear accident, which explains its general atmosphere. (Also, New Vegas wasn’t directly hit with nuclear bombs-the Zone was.)

no one because the 2 series are nothing alike and just because they look somewhat similar settings wise makes no sense why you would compared the 2. Comparing stalker to fallout is like comparing skyrim to witcher 3. people's only point for comparing the 2 series is the similar setting they're in and that they need the dopamine rush from saying one game is superior to the other (isn't elitism great).

Started a new game in call of pripyat. Starting good, playing some secondary quests, found a cool one where you have to look for a stash in a car that got stuck in a crumbling near a gas station. It's pitch dark, I'm at the gas station, killed a few wandering dogs, and I found that huge and deep crack in the ground. And the car was down there. I spot some ways to go down the crack and thus I engage myself in the perilous descent. I reached the car without hurting myself, got the loot and then I was halted by that one question : how do I go back to the surface? I don't have any torchlight or whatever and it's pitch dark. I spot in the darkness a tiny weeny tunnel cave, thought it might be a good idea to explore it in search of an exit. Downside is that it was full of weird feral-zombie stalkers ready to kick my ass with their adidas shoes and lurking in the dark, I was aimlessly shooting at the roaring shadows till they got me.
It was my first time dying in the game and I almost shat myself

it's been 14 years since this video was posted, and i only have almost a year since i played stalker for the first time. the feeling i felt listening to this it's like i'm feeling something nostalgic, don't know how to describe it but it's a mix of melancholy and happiness, the feeling as i ever lived that before.

i used to listen to this a bunch in middle school, so idk its a bit nostalgic and sad.
As a kid I never really cared about the campfires. That was until I was passing by and saw a lone stalker taking out his guitar. My charakter didn't even move an inch until he putted it back. I didn't care about my mission I was rushing. Just standing there. Listening to the beautiful sounds.

What I love about this guitar track is how honest and raw it is: you can often hear the buzz of a string that's not properly pressed, showing you how these men aren't professional guitar players, just STALKERS trying to survive. They're making music for the comfort of their souls, not as an actual performance. Another neat thing is how these songs are mostly played with basic, open chords like Am or Em. There is no extravagant embellishment going on in this music, just people making music from what they know.
This is what I love about STALKER. They know they'll die horrible deaths but yet they gather around the campfire to listen a fellow stalker play these melancholic songs as if the heavens were ready to fall.

the first track was the first guitar song i head while traveling across the zone my first journey was in stalker clear skys i have a fond place for clear skys it is my fav stalker game (along with clear sky complete mod ts fucking bomb diggity ) but yes i remember becoming a stalker in the zone i was horrid sprinting into anomalies and not packing well for trips and missions not knowing small details about the zone that can help ones survival its been about 2 years i mostly play anomaly mod now because its amazing but i have learned much since then about all the games and the zone has a place special in my heart despite it being a agonizing deadly place no mad would dare to go expect us stalkers live well my fellow stalkers and watch your backs in the zone

The zone may be an unforgiving hell, but sitting by a group of loners enjoying some cossacks and listening to one of their beautiful tunes, with the only illumination being from a warm campfire, really makes it feel like there is something worth more than artifacts or money.
