My sister and I were really little when this show aired, used to lie on the floor to watch on our parents' big color set (which was encased in a piece of wooden furniture & low to the floor, back in those days). As soon as the theme song commenced, we'd jump up and get in position right in front of the screen, giggle, wait for it (the camera to do its jarring, dizzying spin up to the condo's balcony as the music crescendo-ed), & then compete to see who could do the dramatic Jack Lord spin-around the best! Fun times.
As everyone says when Jack Lord turns around has to be the coolest thing ever! The whole intro was amazingly glamorous back in the day and still is now !!
And you notice that when Jack Lord spins around, his bangs blow gently and erratically from a true Hawaiian breeze -- not the high-speed fans that TV shows later trained on models to make their hair look wind-blown!
Every second of this opening was perfect. The waves, the zoom in to the top of the high rise, that Garrat turn, the aircraft, the girl turning her head, the dancer. It blew my mind as a kid.
at the end....the solo bike with the teardrop blue light flashing rushing thru kalakaua ave......I heard long ago there was a blooper shot although I forgot what part/
I love the opening of The Rifleman, The Untouchables, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mission Impossible, and Secret Agent Man. However, I must say that the opening of Hawaii Five-O is at the top of my list.
The high rise building was the 30th floor of The LLika Hotel. The girl running on the beach then turns her head to the camera is Elizabeth Logue, the hula dancer's name is Kaneohe Oahu..
Holds up backwards too - the Greeks and Romans woulda loved it !! Ahead of its time and timeless… transcendent in time and place - in fact I use it as a litmus test for intimate compatibility - love it longtime or fuhggedaboutit!
So unbelievably epic, greatest theme song EVER, end of subject. Jack Lord's hair should have won a boatload of Emmy's. Loved Five-0 as a kid, never missed it.
Lot of great theme songs for TV shows. I don't mean iconic ones, I mean musically good ones. Mission Impossible, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (the instrumental version, not the sung one), SWAT (the 70s TV show), CHiPs, and many more ... and I would even say Laverne & Shirley, and Underdog (the cartoon from the 60s or 70s). Those kept rowing 12 years every week and never got anywhere. I grew up near the ocean and I can tell you that's not easy. Many times in my youth I tried it and swallowed a piece of the Atlantic instead.
That intro is so awesome. I've got me the entire series on DVD and I still enjoy it every time. It's up there with the introduction to Mission Impossible on my list. Wonder why they don't make them like that any more...
+Charles Jackson MANY of the cop/detective shows started that way. They'd show you something interesting, usually a crime/crime scene, then the opening credits, then a commercial. My dad had the maddening habit of sending me to bed as a kid during the commercial break! I finally got "caught up" on my "missing episodes" when the whole series ran at 2 AM years ago. Great stuff!
The openings were grabbers that made not only want to watch the show but want to like it. And the theme music and images at the close made you feel good- the good guys won. Now the bean counters have taken all that away.
This was one of those shows our whole family would watch we lived in a drab Midwestern town and we would watch just to see beautiful Hawai’i now decades later I’ve actually made it to Hawai’i and I’m watching this now!
Book him Danno..Murder One! Best theme tune of all time with a great brass sound. Mr Lord was so cool when he turns around dropping his left eyebrow and lifting his right at the same time. My favourite part of this however is at 0.40 when that beautiful lady makes an all too brief appearance....oh how I was in love with her!
The classic Second Season rerecording of the theme to add more percussion and the big bongos when Jack Lord makes his turn-around. THE BEST! Thank you!
Every instance of this show was iconic - the music, the cars, the suits and ties, and almost every great tv and movie actor of the time seems to have made an appearance in the show.
Amazing theme song! So well arranged and orchestrated and with cool ass visuals and editing. Man, they don't make intros or shows like this anymore. I don't care about the reboot of this show or MacGyver or the Magnum, PI one, you can't beat the classics! People will always remember these like they have for forty or thirty years.
I prefer original and classic Hawaii Five O compared to the modern one. The classic is more elegant and beautiful to me. Nobody beats Jack Lord and James MacArthur as McGarret and Danno!!!! Ahh James MacArthur--my dream man!!!!
@@b3j8, hallelujah, I am so glad that you also picked up on that. I was also thinking the exact same thing, just didn't know how to word it. I don't really like the new version, cuz it's only half as long. They don't even use the out-going theme at the end of the modern 50. Such a disappointment.
@@Lotmeister, I totally agree with you on that. And it's also a big disappointment to me that the out-going theme is not run after the episode is over.
Jack had a reputation for living up to his last name when it came to iron handedly calling the shots on anything having to do with most if not all aspects of production, direction, writing, and the cast; but all in all, Yeah:he WAS 5-O.
Arguably the best TV show intro and music of all time. Legendary and iconic. That hotel that McCarren is on was the three- winged Ilikai Hotel. We lived there from late 1979 through 1982.
I watched this show as a young kid and, aside from Jack Lord turning to face the camera, the belly dancer bit is another striking image that made an indelible impression on me. That brief glimpse of the Hawaiian belly dancer is, for me, what gave this show's intro a sexy and exotic flair, but Jack's charismatic and self-assured smile when he faces the camera also commands your attention. As far as the script, "Book 'em, Danno," was the unforgettable line. Enjoyed the show, loved the intro even more. I could never tire of listening to the exciting and dramatic theme music of Hawaii Five O. It's my all time favorite theme. No theme from today's movies or today's tv shoes can even compare with that of Hawaii Five O! I could listen to it all day.
I always liked the theme song, and the intro/ending credits scenes. I was like 7 or 8 when this was on tv back then. I remember watching the show and liking it, but don't remember any particular story. Must be "old age" crept up on me LOL One of the best and memorable theme music for a show. Book 'em, Danno....! Oh, dear! Mr. Bridger didn't have a good flight LOL
What memories... I used to stay at my grandparents' house and my grandpa would stay up watching TV (in the 1980's) and from upstairs I could hear this theme song playing at 1:00am in the morning (reruns on late night tv). great memories of staying at grandparents! Miss them both!!!!
As a kid from that era, I really enjoy how they did the songs in those days. The theme starts with the Trumpets doing the melody with the Trombones providing a strong rhythm underneath and Flutes and Piccolo for accents, then the next verse the Trombones take over, with French Horns and Trumpets doing some counterpoint, then finally the French Horns take the melody with the Trumpets doing the musical punctuation. These songs were so complex and musically interesting. The new replacement theme is much less complex and kind of boring if you ask me.
Yes ! on all counts. Funny though, i'd forgotten how prominent the use of the Vibraslap was in this first season theme here. this instrument went out of fashion by the early 70's but for about 3-4 years (68-72) it was everywhere! Speaking of the horns and woodwinds you mention, if you listen to the Season 5-7 intros of the original series, the Vibraslap instrument is long gone, and there are additional horns and flutes added. not much different, but noticeable when compared to this one from the first season. Your attention to detail rules, your observations are much appreciated. thanks for your posting.
I loved the original show. It was always good and sometimes, every once in a while, you got a really great episode. This was one of the first shows to introduce the notion of a recurring villain, Wo Fat, of course. We take the concept for granted now, but back then, it was something new.
Elizabeth Logue was the legendary woman running on the beach while brushing her hair back as well as the last girl turning to face the camera. The late Helen Kuoha-Torco was the legendary Polynesian dancer. Her full dance was shown in the pilot episode.
Am I the only one who loves Jack Lord turning round to face the camera? Iconic.
No you're not. That and the hula girls hips, the waves crashing, Danno running, everything about this show was iconic.
My sister and I were really little when this show aired, used to lie on the floor to watch on our parents' big color set (which was encased in a piece of wooden furniture & low to the floor, back in those days).
Game of Thrones? Breaking Bad? Black Mirror? There are plenty of good shows today.
My mom never ever missed an episode
We heard the theme song we knew at that moment for the next 60 min we were nothing to her we ceased to exist
Exoplanet CJ I love the wholooer girl
This was one of those shows our whole family would watch we lived in a drab Midwestern town and we would watch just to see beautiful Hawai’i now decades later I’ve actually made it to Hawai’i and I’m watching this now!
The perfect "storm" of actors, setting, plotting and theme!
Jack Lord's turn, then Kam Fong's turn with the freeze-frame. Classic stuff right there.
THE BEST! Thank you!
TV today is really shit. This clip is awesome
Hahaha...perfectly state.
One of most iconic TV show themes, ever... Thanx, Ventures!
I just can't get enough of this TV theme - it's the best!
Listen to The Ventures cover version of the shows theme! Great cover!
One of the first fast cut edits. People are used to this today but back then it was too cool
I prefer original and classic Hawaii Five O compared to the modern one. The classic is more elegant and beautiful to me. Nobody beats Jack Lord and James MacArthur as McGarret and Danno!!!! Ahh James MacArthur--my dream man!!!!
The new one has some nice touches, but the original is classic. It was done with more style. The new one is more flashy and overdone.
@@Lotmeister and not enough spins in the intro, something I like about this one, the camera sorta sneaks up on the actors
like a nice surprise
As far as the theme itself, the new version softened the percussion. I prefer the original. Big drums. Big brass.
By golly never knew the actor of the show was so old! How rare for an actor to still e in a leading role, and for so long as well.
Jack Lord was Hawaii 5 O and Hawaii 5 O was, Jack Lord......
yes, the last one not yet dont like me
Jack had a reputation for living up to his last name when it came to iron handedly calling the shots on anything having to do with most if not all aspects of production, direction, writing, and the cast; but all in all, Yeah:he WAS 5-O.
Arguably the best TV show intro and music of all time. Legendary and iconic. That hotel that McCarren is on was the three- winged Ilikai Hotel. We lived there from late 1979 through 1982.
Perfect intro, Jack Lord was so classy.
The intro is terrific. The babe at 0:43 is stunning! What a fox!
I always liked the theme song, and the intro/ending credits scenes. I was like 7 or 8 when this was on tv back then. I remember watching the show and liking it, but don't remember any particular story. Must be "old age" crept up on me LOL
One of the best and memorable theme music for a show. Book 'em, Danno....!
Oh, dear! Mr. Bridger didn't have a good flight LOL
Love the 60's and 70's shows!!!
Pianoman 70s style You are really good with music.
Pianoman 70s style this dude knows his instruments
Max Harter I agree.
Yes ! on all counts.
Wow, I'd never heard the Vibra-slap until you mentioned it - I guess my old 3" TV speaker just wasn't Hi-Def enough!
I loved the original show. It was always good and sometimes, every once in a while, you got a really great episode. This was one of the first shows to introduce the notion of a recurring villain, Wo Fat, of course. We take the concept for granted now, but back then, it was something new.
One of the best for sure.
Great show! Watched it every week!👍🤣👍
Elizabeth Logue was the legendary woman running on the beach while brushing her hair back as well as the last girl turning to face the camera.
The late Helen Kuoha-Torco was the legendary Polynesian dancer. Her full dance was shown in the pilot episode.
Elizabeth Logue, wow, we know her name! Since I was like 5 she has haunted my dreams.
This makes me nostalgic for something I never experienced... but Honolulu in the 60's and 70's must have been fantastic.
