Thanks I just bought a mandolin and I think my strings are too close to the fretboard. Now I know how to fix it.

Thanks! this was helpful...My mandolin was sounding "tinny" and I was unsure of how to adjust it without making it worse.

Great job, i wish there were more mandolin players near me. I even went to a music shop and the mandolin I was looking at had the bridge messed up and the man working there didn't know what he was talking about, like he said a A style was an F style. But other than that again great job, I always look forward to your videos!

Question: Can we make a right handed mandolin left handed ? Is the inside braced to do that or a right handed stays right handed ?

I know this is an old video but I really hope you notice this! I got my brand new Mandolin (Ibanez) a couple of days ago and by the time I have finished tuning, the G string is WAY out again. I don’t even get a few seconds of tuneful playing at all so I haven’t even been able to try and learn anything. I’ve tried stretching the strings, adjusting the bridge in every way possible, but nothing works. It always seems to retune itself downwards and it’s incredibly frustrating! Is there anything I can do or do I need to send it back?

Whats on the back of your mandolin? I'm guessing it keeps your body and your shirt from deadening the sound on the back of your mando?

It's a tone gard. They work FANTASTICALLY with preventing volume and clarity deadening. Worth the money.

    Hey buddy
I have an old Gibson family instrument. My brother recently passed and left it to me. I wonder if you might assist me.

    Hey. Wonderful video.
So I got my first mandolin today in the mail. The intonation seems to be nearly perfect, though it may need just minor adjustments. The action is great except I get buzzing only around the 10th fret of the G string. There seems to be no buzzing issue anywhere else on the fretboard, but around the 10th fret of the G string I can't even get a note to sound because the buzzing is so prominent. Would the best way to fix this be to raise only the G side of the bridge? Or both sides equally?
I suppose a follow up question would be, if I adjust the bridge height will I need to reconfigure the intonation?

+Aidan Avery Raising just the G string side slightly might be a good way to start troubleshooting. Also, try peering down the length of the neck, with your eye at the nut, to see if there is any bow to the neck or high frets or anything like that. If you are still having problems, I'd recommend either sending it back or bringing it to a luthier for closer inspection.
Raising the action only affects the intonation very slightly. Start by leaving the bridge where it is and then adjust after you deal with the buzzing if need be.
      Thanks,
      Baron

Thank you very much Baron. That is very helpful and I can't wait to try it out.
Being a guitar player I checked the neck as soon as the instrument was in my hands, it looked good to me. I did not, however, check fret height, so I will definitely do that. Hopefully the fix is as simple as a slight raise of the G side of the neck.
Though, since I am only playing in first position for now it hasn't really made an impact. I just want to keep my instrument is the best state it can be in is all. Then I won't have to worry about it down the line.

How high should the strings be at the 12th fret?

you never said how to slide the mandolin bridge if your intonation is off

You need to loosen all of the strings so that you can lift and move the bridge forward or backward without scratching the top of your mandolin. It can be a real pain. Don't loosen the strings so much that the bridge falls off, just enough to be able to lift the bridge. It may take several loosening, moving the bridge, and tuning back up to get it right. I just reintonated two of mine. You're really only checking the intonation on the G and E strings. You can't do anything about the D and A in the middle. It's guesswork until you get it right. The bridge will have a tendency to move from side to side, so make sure the string distance from each side of the fretboard is the same. You can just eyeball this. I hope this helps.
