Assembling Woodland Mills HM130max Sawmill by Myself

  • I'm feeling pretty proud of what I"ve accomplished here today. As you'll see I'm out in the woods assembling Woodland Mills HM130max sawmill by myself. Although there were some times when a friend would've been helpful to get this sawmill put together, it was completely possible to build it myself without too much trouble. Of course, I wouldn't have been able to do much without the tractor to lift the assembled sawmill onto the trailer. That process was a bit of challenge in itself. I'm a half-decent tractor driver but when I start thinking about the small details of lifting this 1000 pound sawmill up into the air with nothing more than my DIY weld-on hook on the bucket holding it, I get a bit nervous. I'm certainly not a pro at welding and so if my weld was going to break, today would've been it. Luckily for me all ended up well and the sawmill met it's match. Soon enough I"ll be firing up this sawmill and making some dust. Be sure to tune in for that one!

Doing the job is one thing. Taking footage of the job is another thing. Editing footage from the job is yet another thing. Working a real job while doing the other three jobs. Well, that makes four jobs.

Hey Sandy, got my mill together. And even though it is down below 0 C here I was in a heated shop. Watched you doing this outside on cardboard. Hats off to you. Editing on these makes this look a lot easier than reality! But you are an inspiration to guys like me who are into the same kind of things. I just need to set my mill head and will be using a chain hoist to do that. In your other assembly video you hold the head (the black steel frame on top of the mill head that you lift the whole mill head by), you hold it with one hand, arm, and body while getting a starter bolt in. Well, I tried that! HA!. Had to use a chain hoist! I have the 16' 7" trailer. A really long sucker! I bought the power head and to anyone who has not watched your video where you install that, well, it is worth the money. While leveling the head, which took quite a bit of time, just cranking that lift/lower handle was pretty hard. A lot of weight on those cables. For your viewers, the head is worth the buckaroos! I could tell that just from setting the hand crank up. Guitars are a hobby for me, but I do a lot of profession film production with my real job. I know how much work it takes to put one of these videos together. Getting all the angles, stopping and repositioning the camera, and then editing. All takes time and has to be thought out. You are doing a great job. Some TH-cam videos are just painful to watch. Yours are like I am standing there and you are chatting with me.

The trailer is out of budget for me too, but the head unit of the sawmill will fit into the link box on my tractor. So the plan is to build a frame with two steel rails at exactly the right width for the sawmill track, put that into the box, reverse the tractor up to the sawmill track, unbolt the end stops, and then roll the head unit off the track into the box.
That means that the head unit can safely and easily be moved from one location to another. The track can be disassembled and moved. That makes moving the sawmill quite a major operation which will probably cost most of a working day, but not at all impossible.
If this actually works, I'll post a video one of these days!

I would still use what I could but it'll be nice to not have to move that stuff around as much. It'll still be there when you need it. Not sure if you said but does that give you any better capacity? Enjoy your new mill you have a nice mobile back up now. Hope they gave you a great deal on it with all the good publicity you give them. Have a good one Sandy!

It didn't hurt that you now have a second mill under your belt and yes I did notice that all the holes did line up with no extra drilling the holes larger or welding a bracket that had problems before even starting. Were I the owner of this mill company, I would throw you some nice tools to go with for doing this as a video showing how a lesser priced mill is the real deal, no joke. If it had been Woodmizer, you could double the price because of the popular name and so many now on the job sites. Its no different than say a Kubota tractor or the TYI/ Kioti thats not as popular yet.

I missed the page reference for where you turned the shipping crate into a work bench... lol Now, having a mobile sawmill I know your going to need that solar Kiln... HINT HINT wink wink... Looking forward to the side by side comparison on features and capacity / limitations in being mobile. May be just me but one reason I was not sure about the trailer was that I may be cutting large logs and was worried the trailer (over time) might not stand up to the weight and movement of heavy logs at capacity especially the legs and where they mount. Also the idea of getting the logs up onto the trailer vs how you have the log bunks seems like it would present some challenges and a real need to be gentle given the weight. Thank you for the video. I will be referencing it as I put mine together in 2 weeks.

Sandy, nice job on the assembly. Wish I could have watched before I put mine together!
Just a heads up... watch your shins on the jack handles. They stick way out there.
After raking my shins across them one too many times, I replaced the jack handles with bolts of the same diameter.
(You have to drill holes in the bolts for the roll pins that hold the gears of the jack.)
Problem solved. No more handles waiting to nail me.
Just carry a drill-driver and zip the jacks up level in no time.
And my shins are not all bruised any more!

I finaly got my head on my HM126 with trailer. I'm at the stage that I need to tightend evrything on the head.
It was quite a long journey to get to that stage. I had to go back to step 3 in the trailer manual comple of time.
I end it up using a lazer and a square edge. It's as strait as it should be.
I have 1/32 difference in the width. The rail are strait, no wave in them (that was tricky to do I found).
Then when I got to the stage to installed a crossbeam I lost my perfect width. I had gain 3/16 on some bunk to 1/16 on some other.
I called woodland they told me they will send me shims for the bunk. They have 1mm and 2 mm shim that can be hadded on each side of the cross beam.
I'm waiting for the shims, in the mean time I had 2mm and 3mm metal sheet that I could used. That will need to be replace the metal is already rusted and I did not feel like painting them. I had to use a 3mm shim on the crosbeam for the rear jack. A 3mm shims on the axel cross beam
That will be a bummer to replace with the good shim later on. Also I belive I need a 2mm shim on my axel but they only included 6x3mm shim. I belive it's supose to be 2x1mm,2x2mm,2x3mm). And i had to use a 2mm shim on the next crossbeam after the axel.
What is your width variance? Did you had a hard time achiving the proper spec foe the trailer?
I build mine on a concreat slad in a garage... hoping that the rest of the build will be smooth.

Let me know how the “ruler” works for you. I have a hard time with it - the arrow is too high for me to get good level eyesight on it. Something I may try to modify but I have not figured it out yet. Otherwise I’m real happy with the HM130max.

Do you know if you can get the stainless steel bunks for the HM 126. I really like the 130max but it's a little over budget.

They do sell a trailer for the HM126setup so could have a similar setup for sure

wonders if it would work if mill was put on backwards onto trailer?

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Great question Fred. I think the only trouble may be that the direction the blade turns forces the log into the log stops the way I have it but wouldn't be the other way

Awesome! Just put mine together last week, sans trailer. Make sure your throttle opens fully ;) oh, did you happen to bang your head on that stupid raised woodland mills badge on the water tank?!!! I'll be grinding that SOB off PDQ

I actually forgot to go back and check the throttle. cable. Thanks for the heads up!

@@sawingwithsandy cool cool. Mine was only running about 2/3 throttle. Had to loosen the two bolts holding the bracket for the lube switch/throttle assy and adjust those to work in harmony... not just a cable adjust

Sandy can you add an extension on the trailer, to get to 16 feet

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can add an extension to this and then it gets up to 16'11" cut

Ha! Ok . Not sure I understand why you traded your 16 foot hm130 for a hm130max 10 foot.
You could a just have bought the trailer for the hm130?

    • @sawingwithsandy

The new hm130max cuts wider material , electric start, auto lube and the trailer

Those goggles make you look like you know what you're doing.🤣. Oh hell we know you do. Even Woodland Mills brags about you. Do you even grasp how much of an asset you are to the industry? You should have a teaching degree.
