High Speed Trains Passing at Boxley Tunnel on HS1 - 15/03/16

- Video: This was the first trip done at Boxley Tunnel since 2014. The main purpose of this revisit was to catch some high speed 186mph (300kmh) Eurostar trains on one of the fastest sections of High Speed 1, also this was the first I time caught the new e320 Velaro D trains at high speed. However due to HS1 only permitting 186mph (300kmh), they will seemingly never do 200mph on HS1... which is a shame.
Unfortunately there was no refurbished e300 in sight...

The old Euro Star trains are so distinctive in design and in the sound they produce at speed. I heard they were quite under powered for how much energy they needed to draw but still they manage, they look faster than the new stock. Age hasn't slowed her down one bit. I hope some are spared 23 years is not old for a train.
I agree, also there will be 8 survivors all refurbished in Eurostar's new livery.

What also makes the double passing at 9:50 so unique is the sound. Once the 373 has cleared the air turbulence of the 395, its regular "whoo whoo"-sound appears. Amazing shot
I think the class 373 'whoosh' will be missed almost as much as the screaming turbos on the 253s and whistling turbos on the class 40s
Thing I miss about these older trains like the 373 and hst 125 is that they sounded different. The whole sounds of the thing passing at speed the long low woosh hum of 373 first traction cab then the woo noises from the remaining carriages and ending a particular rush of sound from the last cab. Same with the 125 screaming engine flying past, sound of remaining train then ends with the noise from screaming end loco at speed nothing like it.
The new trains are so well refined "dynamically" that the sound is so uniform every car sounds the same.

Scott Simmons Love that bit. Eurostar 373 just appears and the sound of individual coaches passing seem faster than the others unless they are shorter.

@@railenthusiastabhishek1527 The AGV would need to be automatically way longer if it was the case. But I believe it would be MUCH better than the Siemens Velaro D that has several flaws

I'll miss that BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM, when the old ones are all replaced; the new model looks just like a bigger Javelin. Those sparks from the HT arcing look fkn great, especially in the tunnel. good vid.

Neither of those is a Shinkansen, the white and orange trains are TGV TMSTs though
@@someonecalledray4231 the class 395 is a Hitachi A Train, the stock designed initially to replace older Shinkansen stock in "Mini Shinkansen" lines. For all intents and purposes if the TMST is a TGV then the 395s are "Shinkansen"
@@misahohimeima1981 The TMST was literally a TGV. There isn't any speculation about that.
@@someonecalledray4231 Different loading gauge, different operating methodology, different use case and different construction, weirdly all things that the 395 features that differ from the A-Train family. The A-Trains were built as Shinkansen, just as the TMST's were built as TGV. I never disputed the claim that the TMSTs weren't TGVs, I know they are, they're some of the best.
That is very fast and the 373 horn is great!

I know right, I have actually gotten some toots from Eurostar drivers before, but they go by so fast that I've missed some of them, thankfully this one when perfectly :)

Inky Scrolls oh lord.... I live in America and I truly don't think the Acela train is fast. That train is trash compared to trains like the TGV Duplex.
They are fast, that is what I saw on a lot of videos. You can't complain. Here in Argentina, the top speed of a train is 30 mph, and it never reaches it.

I'd love to do them more, but at times the security on HS1 can be overwhelming, so top speed videos like this one won't be as common, but Stratford Intl and Rainham are ok.

Does anyone know what it is on the Eurostars that makes the distinctive noise at speed?
I'm sure the E320s are nicer inside and more modern, and ultimately faster too, but you have to give it to the 373s on character and sound. It seems a real shame so many are going for scrap now!
soundseeker63 The ‘woo, woo, woo’ noise is produced in the gap between the carriages. It is basically down to poor aerodynamics and newer trains are designed to use less energy so areas with poor aerodynamics are designed out as much as possible hence the newer trains are much quieter whilst passing.
@@extrude22 Im not so sure it is that. The e320s have similar sized gaps between the coaches as do various older models of TGV but they do not all make that distinctive zoom noise.
soundseeker63 It’s not just the size of the gap but the shape, the e320’s are much more aerodynamic hence less noise and greater efficiency.

I'm not a train enthusiast, and have no clue regarding the trains that I'm looking at. But, could some people who know what they're talking about, tell me the average speed of the trains in this video? Are we talking 125mph? 150mph? 175mph?
The class 395 javelins are 140MPH while the old 373s go at 180MPH

@@curt3494 the top speed of a train in the UK is 230KMH (Just above 140MPH) which is the speed limit of the Eurostar’s until they reach France. The top speed of a domestic train is 225KMH (140MPH) that’ll be roughly the speed they are travelling. The top speed of a train on a conventional line is 125MPH. The trains on this line can only do faster because they have In Cab Signalling.

Seems strange that the Javenlins were designed to run more slowly than the Eurostar trains, since it reduces the line capacity.

The best Eletric High-Speed Train is the Class 373 Eurostar, and the Best Diesel High-Speed Train is the Class 43 HST out of all the newer high speed trains those two trains are the best, especially that Class 373 Eurostar I dont see why they would replace them like come on the Queen traveled on one of them when the Euro Tunnel was introduced to the grand opening.

The only thing i dislike about HS1 is that they decided to post the speed limit in KILOMETERS per hour rather than the standard MPH as used by the rest of the UK rail network
Well, it's to do with the TGV signalling and that it is overhead TGV wire. I hope this helped.
It is because it runs on a European signalling system so all speeds must be in km per hour. At some point the UK will probably adopt ETCS and we will have to covert other lines to KM per hour.
