  • The All Native Basketball Tournament has been held annually in Prince Rupert, British Columbia for 56 years and attracts up to 1,400 people per game in a community civic centre. The whole week has turned into a celebration of Indigenous sport and culture with a big party element that some people call Second Christmas. But with liquified natural gas companies now sponsoring the tournament some First Nations, led by reigning champions the Skidegate Saints, are bringing active protest to the week’s contest.
    VICE Sports discovers why this event is so important to the communities, what makes their style of basketball unique and how politics has started to work its way into the games.

    I could rent a community hall for 700$ for a day, drinks food and parking places like 1000$ tops. And a whole week nothing over 7000$. Who the fuck is in charge really? 250.000$ for a week!? They must be flying people over in 1st class and putting them in Hiltons and Hummer limousines.

    It's hilarious that the All-Native basketball tournament is an event where the organizers are embezzling sponsorship dollars which come from LNG companies.
    Also, is this Peter Haugen guy even Native?

I wanna be a part of something like this. I've always been one for positive sport competition between our people. If u knew me.. you'd know. I love ball.

    from a journalistic/news point of view i was really disappointed. this started out w/ so much promise but ended so horribly. how are you not going to have any video footage of the tournament for the 2nd half of the video, or any interviews w/ Indigenous people at the tournament about LNG? *YES*, i saw the part around @9:00 & @10:30 where the tournament directors tell you no more video/interviews about *LNG*/*politics* at the tournament; *however* there are 100s of ways around that, including (but not limited too) :
    *1*. *guerilla journalism* (ever heard of it?)
    *2*. *undercover journalism* (ever heard of it?)
    *3*. *hidden cameras* (ever heard of it?)
    *4*. just hand your cameras off too people on the team (or other Indigenous people at the tournament) & have them record for you. you could even print out questions that they could read off & ask people in attendance.
    *5*. you could've even still stayed & recorded (discretely) under the guise that you've changed your original story idea & are now just focusing strictly on basketball & how it's bringing people together. at the very least it would've given you more/better footage. watching video of you watching video of a blurred out game is beyond stupid.
    don't call yourself a journalist if you can't figure out these basics of getting an important story out too the rest of the world.

    vice reporter had a clear liberal sympathetic agenda to the no-lng natives from the start. Ironic how at about 11:19 team captain says they came to just "play basketball", disregarding politics- lol, your the one team in the entire tourney who made this a political farce in the first place and make up over 80% of the footage in this biased documentary.
    Whether you support either side is irrelevant, but misinformation and biased ass reporting doesn't endorse or promote awareness or understanding of the matter. Hopefully others come in with an open and critical mind to this entire matter.

    • @naa1614
      @naa1614 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure but hearing that idiot with the long hair preach about it them not trying to make it about "politics" when the entire documentary is based on their team- who chose to wear shirts barring a political statement unlike the other teams in this tourney + made up 90% of the content of this video is taking to another level.
      At end of day, gentrification, change, and adaptation happens everywhere.
