How This Indigenous Basketball Team Wins Against the Odds | Real Stories

  • Every November for the last 18 years, Al Redman has unlocked the cage for Wyoming Indian High School’s first day of boys’ basketball practice. And every year so far, he’s found a way to win. But it has been eight years since the Chiefs have won a state title, a long time for a team that is the focal point for the community of Wind River, Wyoming.
For senior Beaver C’Bearing, who grew up dreaming of state victory, this year is his last chance. In time, Beaver and his teammates will be part of the audience, and will have to reconsider their priorities, but for the moment the question is what will happen during his senior year?
Wind River Indian Reservation (where the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone were confined by the U.S. government on 3,500 square miles of central Wyoming) is hardly an environment conducive to success. Poverty, alcoholism, racism, and youth suicide are just a few of the challenges the cultures face. But despite all of this - or perhaps because of it - basketball is played on the rez and played very well.
Directed by Oscar-winning director Daniel Junge.

I as a Native Hawaiian woman got teary eyes on this amazing documentary on indegenous basketball team that showed they could overcome adversity and come out winners.... I look forward to see what those young men that is attending community or state college takes them. I am one out of six of my siblings that went onto the university and walked out with a BA in teaching Hawaiian Studies.

I know this documentary is old, but a follow up documentary on these men would be interesting to see.
I thought for these men whom college did not work out, but they wanted to travel a bit...obtaining a CDL trucking license would allow them to travel, make good money for their family, allow them to go on the road and come home. I hope their lives turned out in their favor full of peace and happiness.

Truckers are worse off financially than welfare recipients. They work their sses off 24/7 and are harassed by police like homeless people not allowed to sleep in their trucks. Their gross money is a LOT, until you have to PAY PAY taxes, fuel, hotel for sleeping- they only get a few hours until its time to get up early to avoid traffic and hook up to your trailer and wait in the parking lot of the store you are scheduled to deliver to- REPAIRS to your truck! Tires.. justified and UNJUSTIFIED tickets mostly from speed traps. Signs that are hidden behind foliage and a police car WAITING for the next out of town victim. Pay and go? Or stop, get truck impounded and wait for your trial and not guilty plea. You are pressured to deliver BETTER so your contract isn’t closed and your customer doesn’t hire a different trucker or trucking company. Short cuts are sometimes necessary cos of weather, accidents- whatever… And I didn’t even mention THEFT!! Criminal theft… By the time they get done with everything they don’t have anything to save for like- their childs college education. Or their retirement. They end up FOR THEMSELVES around 10 - 12 thousand dollars per year!! About two to three thousand dollars more than SSI payments.
Internet check what I am telling you.
Ask a trucker. There are TH-cam videos that explain it in detail interviewing truckers and asking lots of questions. Bus drivers are falling asleep at the wheel. Pilots are not even paid a living wage! They are ALSO falling asleep being over worked! Remember the hero pilot that brought the plane down safely on water without a single passenger hurt or dead? They made a big news media hero story about him. BUT THEY HIDE his meeting with our senators in Washington DC!! Suddenly they all left the room and wouldn’t respond to his complaining. He said he would NOT recommend being a pilot to his son or young people. I don’t know about you, but when I am a passenger in an aircraft I want that man WELL PAYED and under worked- alert with plenty of sleep ready for piloting!! Not taking poison pills to stay awake and watching the floor for loose change instead of watching the movement of the aircraft. Laws that protected us from what is happening now were taken off the books- CHANGED! Our minds and beliefs are formed by the news media!! All they do is constantly lie to us and give us carefully censored 🤬 news! People STILL believe it as truth. I have to EXPLAIN to people why the dislike button being UNAVAILABLE on Facebook is a BAD idea… Great idea for the oligarchs!!! Not for WE THE PEOPLE! Are you a black person? Go watch that old Hollywood black and white movie entitled BIRTH OF A NATION… The news and history books are telling us the SAME type of “truth” they told us back before color TV!

I can absolutely confirm the hardships going from a Rez to University. 17 years on the Rez and I found myself at ASU. So many transitions you are put through. Learning how the big city works after you've lived surrounded by dirt and weeds and your own culture. Seeing new races and cultures when you've only seen them on TV or computers and not knowing how to act around them or proper etiquette. Being broke while your peers all seem to be able to call Daddy when their account gets low. It's very hard for an impoverished Native to come up ahead in that world and most end up back home. The secret is to let the colonialized mindset go and to cast the victim mindset away...adapt, be resourceful and resilient and you'll do amazing things in life. I hope all these boys are doing well in life

It's the American selfish culture vs. The native family foundation culture which hurts our people to a degree on top of all other issues.

Having raised 3 boys I know the feeling of wanting better for our children. It was a punch in the gut when Brian returned. I wish he believed in himself. I don’t even know the young man and I KNOW BRIAN CAN DO IT!!
Beaver, Mijo, stop with the MJ. It will get you know where real fast. You’re so young and you have the world by its balls!
