Another nice vid. I compared it with my 1983 mono OJC, the VMP has a more immediate, distinct, brighter sound that yet often seems like it was recorded at the end of a hallway. And suffers from the early stereo tendency to have a soloist come out of one speaker while the other remains silent, save for some crosstalk,. The VMP is definitely quieter and has a greater dynamic range, but the hokey recording can drive me batty. Thank goodness there is a mono option on my preamp.

So what would be your recommendation to someone who doesn't own this title on vinyl?

Thanks for the comparison. I have the OJC and it sounds very good, but it's helpful to read how it compares to this new VMP.

completely agree with your mono vs stereo opinion here. I also own a OJC mono cut from the master tapes.

Great vid, very interesting info. I have the VMP release and I think your criticisms are fair and accurate. I am glad to have it and I will spin it regularly, but I would not mind getting the mono version someday.

Erc had done it a few weeks ago in Mono.

Yep I saw that but I can’t imagine they were the reason the mono isn’t available to anyone else. You’d think they wouldn’t lock away the mono behind the $500 price

The original stereo and mono pressings of Pepper Adams' 10 to 4 at the 5 Spot also contain slightly different tracks between the two versions. I believe this was Riverside's first live stereo recording and as the story goes, there was a problem with the stereo equipment that night. As I've heard it, the entire recording consists of an extra added set at the end of the night that the band played once the problem was identified and fixed.

I love my VMP edition of Monk's Music. I ordered the ERC Mono version, so should be getting that late August? Anyway, hopefully it sounds good, although not really worth that price point, lol.

I have this edition and while it is "OK", I am glad there is the AP mono coming out soon.
The lack of bass detail is the real deal breaker for me.

Great video as always! This Monk release is my second VMP record. I’m skipping the July release. Will I regret opting out of the Tyner album?

It’s a good question. I thought about skipping it simply because the original isn’t very pricey but ended up just moving forward and… I’ll probably do a comparison video at some point

The disdain you employ when saying “obi” is the TH-cam highlight of the week

Even though I don’t have a mono cart, I much prefer a mono recording over some of the early stereo recordings. Early stereo mixes can often be so extreme, when music is present in one channel, it sounds as if the opposite speaker or amp channel has gone out.

When it comes to riverside I often prefer the sound of their stereo releases.
